A Toast to New Orleans and You: September 11- 18

Good afternoon my darling family and friends. It is Monday.9/11- a day that we mourn and pay tribute to those that perished in September 11,2001!  🙏
Congratulations to our beloved Saints for a victory vs the Titans.
“It’s Monday. I’m alive. I’m breathing’. I’m living’. I’m blessed. Life is good.” The best weeks start on Monday.”. “When you wake up on Monday morning, wake up with gratitude. Put your feet on the floor with gratitude. Go to work with gratitude. Do your work with a heart full of love.” – Barrie Davenport. Stay cool & hydrated!
My darling friends, I have been enjoying so much being back in my beloved New Orleans. My annual Round Table Luncheon Saluting the 2023-24 Co-hosted by Lisa Alexis, Director of the Office of Cultural Affairs for the City of New Orleans and me was a great success. The annual RTL held on Friday, September 8 at noon at Briquette's was informative, entertaining and delicious, thanks to the speakers, the entertainers and the delicious cuisine.

Congratulations to my darling longtime girlfriend Argentina-born Ana Ester Gershanik for being selected 2023 People's Health Champion! Congratulations as well to my longtime friend: Dr. Mary Bartholomew for being selected as 2024 Queen of Krewe of Cork
On Sunday, after the Saints Game, I loved joining and listening to William de Marigny Hyland presenting "Los Islenos de Luisiana : Last Living Vestige of Spanish Colonial Louisiana”  at the Duetsche House. My paternal grandmother was from the Canary Islands, but she settled in Cuba,
Los Isleños, islanders from Spain's Canary Islands, were recruited to populate Louisiana between 1777 and 1782 to stop British colonial encroachment west of the Mississippi River. These colonists and their descendants fought in the American Revolution under the command of Governor Bernardo de Galvez as well as in the Battle of New Orleans, 1814 - 1815.  Isleños have been community leaders, elected officials, bootleggers, professional men and women, subsistence livers - in short, they have been present in every facet of life in Louisiana since the late 18th century
.
Darlings, it is time to start thinking of Halloween

I’ve worked with an endless number of elected officials in my 30+ years of volunteering for New Orleans’ French Quarter. Over the decades, in our struggle to protect our world-famous architecture and to keep the Quarter as a viable neighborhood, many office-holders have stood up for us. (Um, some, not so much… 😊)

Not taking away from others who truly helped, honestly, Jackie Clarkson was in a league of her own. She:

  • got the city to create, and got the public to vote into the City Charter, a master plan “with the force of law.”
  • stopped time shares in the French Quarter.
  • protected the artists’ colony at Jackson Square.
  • put regulations on the nightly walking ghost tours which used to go as late as midnight.
  • fought against “spot zoning” again and again.
  • fought to keep the French Quarter “hotel moratorium.”
  • took charge of the re-opening of the Mahalia Jackson Theater in Armstrong Park.

Oh, that’s just the beginning of the list…

Friends,

Please join me at 10 a.m. Monday, September 18, at St. Louis Cathedral to remember Dr. Alfred E. Lemmon, Director of the Williams Research Center, who died on August 26.

A eulogy will be followed by a Catholic mass, with additional remarks by members of the cultural community. The cathedral memorial will be presided over by Father Patrick J. Williams. To honor Alfred’s decades of scholarship and service to the New Orleans music community, there will be selections performed throughout the memorial by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra String Quartet, OperaCreole, and Dr. Michael White, as well as cathedral musicians Sarah Jane McMahon and Jesse Reeks, organist. A musical prelude will begin approximately 30 minutes prior to the mass.

Immediately following the cathedral service, all are invited to celebrate Alfred’s rich life and profound work at a reception and program hosted by The Historic New Orleans Collection at the Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street.

Everybody at The Historic New Orleans Collection joins you in grief over Alfred’s passing. Join us on September 18 to share our love and respect for a friend and colleague.

A Musical by Max Vernon

Take a step back in time to the French Quarter in 1973 as the patrons of The UpStairs Lounge help a modern-day millennial reevaluate his concepts of love and freedom.

Wes, a 20-something social media obsessed fashion designer has returned from New York to his hometown of New Orleans to transform the former Upstairs Lounge nightclub into a retail store. After a nerve-wracking visit with his realtor, he time travels through a burned-out curtain into the 1973 arson-destroyed club. There, he meets the men who inhabited this “underground” venue decades ago. Despite the many limitations and challenges of the lounge patrons’ lives--and the horrifically tragic crime that ends them—their lifestyle ultimately proves to be more honest, authentic, and joyful than his superficial online social life. Will Wes take these lessons back to the future with him?

This production contains adult language, sexual content, and violence.

###
About New Orleans Fashion Week
New Orleans Fashion Week launched in 2011 with the objective of providing a platform for Louisiana and Southern-based designers to showcase their fashions to global tastemakers. Over the years, the Southern Region's fashion and apparel industry has consistently received national exposure and sustainable growth. New Orleans Fashion Week has provided a viable platform for more than 250 members of the fashion industry, and even more impressive is the continuum of retailers that have acknowledged the talents of the New Orleans design community by including such brands in their store inventory strategies.
