A Toast to New Orleans: Jan. 27-31

Darlings,

Another busy week during the 2015 Carnival Season has gone by.

We have been blessed with several beautiful cool but sunny days so we could enjoy all the activities that my beloved New Orleans had to offer and the events that I attended were indeed very memorable.

Last week, I mentioned in my blog, that it was the calm before the storm and that I did not have a ball to attend, but I was mistaken. There was not one but two balls that I was invited to. The first one was the Krewe of Iris in which I was so tired that I skipped the Ball at the Pontchartrain  Center but I attended the Gala Supper Dance at the N.O. Hilton Hotel. I was the guest of last year's Queen Pam Lockett.  With the Theme “Krewe of Iris Loves to Party,” it was a lot of fun. The 2015 Monarchs areMrs. Rhonda Eckholdt and her father in law, John L. Eckholdt  Kristin Delaney Danflous  is the youngest Captain and I must applaud her. It was really lovely.

On Saturday, it was time to attend the annual Krewe of Tucks Mardi Gras Coronation Ball at the Marriott Hotel and it was lot of fun. I was invited by my darling friend Sheri M. Bleuler McKee who is a maid in the Krewe.

Prior to attending the Carnival Balls, I was invited to attend the annual Stake Out for Justice luncheon. This luncheon celebration has a rich history of business and civic participation in a resounding show of support for the officers who protect and serve us each and every day.
This year's luncheon featured Keynote Speaker Michael Harrison, Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department. Honorees included the Helis Foundation and SafeCam co-founders Robert Simms and Larry Lane. Police officer Jonathan Smith, who got wounded in action, was also honored.
I concluded my week by attending the performance by my darling talented friend Ivan Griffin at Trinity Church. “Songs of a People: Music of the African-American Experience” was a moving experience. Ivan performed along with Michael C. Boucree and Michael Borowitz and at the end got a standing ovation. Bravo mi amigo!
I also  I braved the chilling rain to attend the 20th Anniversary Edition Of The BEST OF THE BEAT Awards And Concert.
hosted by the OFFBEAT MUSIC AND CULTURAL ARTS FOUNDATION at Generation Hall. It was fun and I sow familiar faces as well as new one. Congratulations to the winners.
I also was invited by my friend Ana Ester Gershanik to Touro Synagogue since it was presenting the prestigious L'Chayim (to life) Award to Susan and Lou Good for their service and commitment to Touro Synagogue over the years. I have been to the synagogue but never to the center so I found it to be lovely.

This week is going to be a social marathon for me since there are more parties than I can actually attend.

On Wednesday, I am looking forward to hosting the Round Table Luncheon at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. It's Carnival Time at the Royal Sonesta's Round Table Luncheon
New Orleans' own Carl Mack of Carl Mack Presents will be on hand to speak about the Gay Mardi Gras Krewes. He'll share plans for the fabulous balls and details about the unusual costume requests he often receives. Artist and illustrator Andrea Mistretta will share her experience designing Mardi Gras posters for more than three decades. Some of her artwork will be available for purchase at the luncheon that provides the perfect opportunity to have your selections personalized by the artist. Local author Colleen Mooney will give us a sneak peek into her new book, Rescued by a Kiss, a Mardi Gras-inspired romantic adventure. Finally, editor-in-chief of Renaissance Publishing Errol Laborde will get us up to speed on the historic aspects of New Orleans Mardi Gras as described in his books Krewe: The Early Carnival from Comus to Zulu and Marched the Day God: A History of the Rex Organization.
We will have seasoned New Orleans performers and monarchs-elect Becky Allen and Marshall Harris of the Krewe of Satyricon to entertain us with an unforgettable show. Of course, Round Table resident pianist Jim Walpole will be tickling the ivories for yet another memorable afternoon of merriment at the Royal Sonesta New Orleans.
Don't let the parade pass you by! Plan now to join us for January's luncheon as we prepare for all of the fun and festivities of the Mardi Gras season! Festive attire is encouraged, so wear your best mask! The Royal Sonesta's Round Table Luncheon is $50 inclusive with advance reservations or $55 at the door. Parking is complimentary in the hotel's parking garage. For reservations, please contact Noel Scallan at 504-553-2220 or email her at nscallan@sonesta.com.
That night, it is the annual French Quarter Business Association's Annual Installation & Awards Dinner at the  Royal Sonesta
On Thursday, January 29 is the highly anticipated An Afternoon Tea with WYES. Embrace all things Downton Abbey as you pass a relaxing afternoon sipping champagne and tea as in the splendor of the Edwardian era. Take a picture in front of "Highclere Castle" and enjoy music of the era as jewelry models showcase select items available for purchase with a portion of proceeds benefiting WYES. Attendees can also bid on a variety of special silent auction items that are sure to pique interest. Home of Jennifer and Fred Heebe, 5531 St. Charles Avenue. See calendar for all the details.

On Jan. 29 and 31, local performing ensemble Compleat Stage presents an original multimedia play and performance, “AMERICANA: Different Voices.” The production will be held at the Tigermen Den at 3113 Royal St. Shows start at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. each night. Price of admission is $16. Tickets are available at www.compleatstage.org.

On Friday, January 30, I am looking forward to the Satyricon Ball, where my darling friends King Marshall Harris and Queen Becky Allen will reign supreme.

On Saturday is the annual satirical Krewe du Vieux Parade and I am inviting all my friends and customers to stop by Casell-Bergen Gallery, 1305 Decatur Street for a Krewe du Vieux Parade viewing party starting at 6 p.m.

Darlings, have a great time and may the best team win the Super Bowl.
i want to thank La fete News for help putting this weekly calendar.

Y'all. Come on.

Because of the high demand of these things, These are some of our favorite events we do here at 504ward, and if you haven't been to one before, there's no excuse. Compleat Stage presents an original multimedia play and performance, “AMERICANA: Different Voices.”
On Jan. 29, 31, local performing ensemble Compleat Stage presents an original multimedia play and performance, “AMERICANA: Different Voices.” The production will be held at the Tigermen Den at 3113 Royal St. Shows start at 8pm and 9:30pm each night. Price of admission is $16.00. Tickets are available at www.compleatstage.org.

“AMERICANA: Different Voices” is an original play developed by Compleat Stage. It is the first episode in a trilogy of “AMERICANA” performances by the ensemble. This first episode focuses on the national experience of race, heritage, privilege and immigration in America.

The production will also feature a musical ensemble, playing music inspired by spirituals, folk tunes, and other classic American styles, interwoven with the dialogue.

Ruby Lou Smith, artistic director of Compleat Stage, said that the ensemble was originally inspired by the cultural history of New Orleans, which led to the examination of American experiences as a whole. “And then of course, there have been countless current events that are calling each of us to really examine what it means to be an "American," and what we stand for,” Smith said.

Paul Giess, a Philadelphia-based trumpet player who will be travelling to New Orleans to participate in the show, was inspired by the idea of “Americanization” over generations. “I wanted to ask the question: What does it mean to be an American?” Giess said. “Then I wanted to hold up a mirror to question whether or not we held up to those ideals as a society and as individuals.”

“AMERICANA: Different Voices” feature Louisiana native saxophonist Reagan Mitchell, and poetry by New Orleans’ own Chuck Perkins.

The second episode, “AMERICANA: Different Trains,” will feature the musical composition “Different Trains” by Steve Reich and discuss the themes of American involvement in international conflict. The third episode will focus on the cultural patchwork of New Orleans and its history.

Audience members who attend the performance of this first episode will have access to a special discount for the second episode, set to premiere in late spring, and the third episode. The Jan. 29 show will offer artists half-price tickets as an “Industry Night” special.

COMPLEAT STAGE is a New Orleans-based, 501(c)3 non-profit professional performing ensemble. Their mission is to have a profound, positive impact on the community by telling daring and inspiring stories through interdisciplinary artistic collaboration and by empowering young people through arts education.
