A Toast to New Orleans May 28-June 7: Come Away at Saenger/ Birdfoot Festival /Oyster Festival/ Symphony Chorus and more....

Darling friends, I hope you enjoyed the week and the Memorial Day Weekend as much as I did.

I loved watching the National Memorial Day Concert on WYES TV paying respect to and remembering our fallen heroes who served in the armed forces.

The highlight of this past week was co-hosting, along with Diane Lyons, the annual Round Table Luncheon Saluting Festigals, but if course you knew that!

Once again, I heard "one of the best" after the Round Table Luncheon Saluting the 2019 FestiGals. I am blessed and grateful to the speakers, the entertainers, the delicious luncheon and of course the flowing champagne  made the luncheon to be a very memorable one.
I love my co-chair Diane Lyons who introduced the 2019 Grand Diva of FestiGals , talented and beautiful Amanda Shaw. I was the first Grand Diva and I am called now " A Has Been Grand Diva"!

Album Troi Bechet's Flowers for Halie  (11 photos)

Now Extended Through June 2! Written By & Starring Troi Bechet- Directed by Richon May - Music Direction by Za'hra Dabon.

“Flowers for Halie” is a winner and should not be missed. Brava to the all-female cast that includes talented Troi Bechet, who wrote the play and who plays gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. She is joined on stage by Kathleen Moore and backup singers Arrie'L Dabon and KaShuba Jones- Lee. New Orleans’ own Troi Bechet brings a legend to life in this new celebration of the Queen of Gospel. From her early days in a shotgun shack in New Orleans to her international success as a singer and civil rights leader, Mahalia Jackson journeyed in faith and courage.

Album 2019 American Spirit Awards (64 photos)

I count my blessings for being able to attend and cover the fabulous American Spirit Awards Luncheon and Leadership Forum and later the exciting, elegant and delicious American Spirit Awards Gala.

The American Spirit Awards is a gala celebrating individuals and organizations whose work reflects the values and spirit of those who served our country during the World War II years. 2019 Spirit Award recipients were former Vice President Richard Cheney and former Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, and 2019 American Spirit Medallion Recipients were are The Honorable Everett Alvarez Jr., Gayle Benson, Peggy Noonan and Gerhard L. Weinberg Ph.D. I always enjoy photographing my darling friends and meeting new ones. It was indeed, one of the most memorable nights of my life.

Congratulations:
Congratulations to my darling longtime friend David Villarrubia, owner of Degas House since it was selected to be distinguished as a French Landmark-Only the second house in U.S. to receive this designation.
The French Ministry of Culture recently announced that it has included the Degas House in the Maisons des Illustres network of houses of the famous in various parts of the world.
According to Vincent Sciama, Consul General of France in Louisiana, "I am very excited that the Degas House has been awarded this prestigious French designation. It recognizes the unique work accomplished by Degas House founder, David Villarrubia, and the impact the Degas House has made on the New Orleans cultural scene since the house was established in 1996."
Villarrubia, who was awarded the Chevalier in the French National Order of Arts and Letters by the Ministry of Culture in 2009, responded, "This honor is a tribute to all those who work tirelessly to raise awareness of-and keep alive- the French influence on New Orleans, especially the art of Edgar Degas."

“The Pirates of Penzance”
Summer Lyric Theatre at Tulane University kicks off its 52nd Season with a “semi-staged” production of one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most famous operettas, “The Pirates of Penzance.” The singers will be in costume without a set singing the entire two-act work on Saturday evening at 8:00 and Sunday afternoon at 2:00 in Tulane’s Dixon Hall.

The 36-member cast will feature local favorites Sean Patterson, John Michael Haas and Elizabeth Argus in the lead roles, supported by Summer Lyric first-timers Olivia Yokers and Andre Chiang. Michael McKelvey and Jaune Buisson co-direct and an 18-piece orchestra will be conducted by C. Leonard Raybon.

This production is being staged as a test balloon for Summer Lyric to gauge interest in performing more Gilbert & Sullivan productions and other operettas which haven’t been seen locally in many years – or ever. So I encourage all my readers to come out to Dixon Hall this weekend and show your support. This is important!

TICKETS: $20-$35

THNOC to host former members of U.S. Navy Steel Band for one night celebrating steelpan drum tradition

I don't want to miss this event since I have always enjoyed the band.:
THNOC to host former members of U.S. Navy Steel Band for one night celebrating steelpan drum tradition
On Wednesday, June 5, retired members of the U.S. Navy Steel Band —which performed more than 20,000 concerts worldwide and helped spread the popularity of Caribbean music—will reunite for a one-night performance and lecture at The Historic New Orleans Collection. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition New Orleans Medley: Sounds of the City, the event will explore the steel drum as a musical instrument and its repertoire. The event will take place at 6 p.m. at THNOC’s Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St., and more information on the event and purchasing tickets may be found attached or here.

The band was formed in 1957 in Puerto Rico, but relocated to New Orleans in 1973 and became an integral part of both the local and national music scene. Many of its members stayed in New Orleans after the band separated in 1999.

Andrew Martin, author of Steelpan Ambassadors: The US Navy Steel Band, 1957–1999 (University Press of Mississippi), will lead the band. His research is centered on the theory and analysis of American popular music, as well as various aspects of Afro-Caribbean music and its phenomenal dissemination throughout North America and the globe.

June 6
Two of New Orleans most talented and unstoppable performers have teamed up as a dynamic duo to present Marquee - an ode to the trail blazers of the New Orleans cabaret. Brought to you by Vinsantos, LadyBEAST, and Le Petit Theatre - this heartwarming show gives a window into the history of New Orleans cabaret from the 1890s through the 1950s. A dynamic cast of characters from drag, burlesque, vaudeville and circus pay homage to the colorful history of this well known, but less understood cultural staple of American theatre.

This playful performance lends tribute to the pioneers of New Orleans cabaret such as Nita and Zita, Barbette, and Josephine Baker. Ensemble acts of bawdy burlesque, death defying circus, vaudeville dance comedy, live music and more are tactfully performed by modern stars of the New Orleans cabaret scene including Franky Canga, TitiBaby, Sweet Tooth Simone, Cherry Bombshell, Madame Mystere, Vinsantos and LadyBEAST. Original music by Vinsantos and choreography by LadyBEAST.
