A Toast to New Orleans January 29-Feb. 3: Hobnobber/ Algiers Tricentennial/ Starry Night Gala/ Boycott Bowl at Fulton Street and much more ....

Darlings,

I hope this blog will find you nice and warm at home. I feel so blessed that I am living in my beloved New Orleans rather than the cities in the Midwest that are experiencing snow and Arctic climate.

This past week was an exceptional fun week that I enjoyed tremendously at these events:

Krewe of Orpheus Luncheon & Press conference

I was invited to a delicious and informative luncheon for the Krewe of Orpheus at Desi Vega's Steakhouse.

I am so excited to report that "Orpheus Imaginarium" will be the theme of its 26th parade which will rolls on Lundi Gras, March 4 starting at 6 p.m. Celebrities riding in the 2019 parade include famed entertainer and Orpheus co-founder Harry Connick, Jr.

2019 Monarchs are Mario Lopez, the host of "Extra TV" and the syndicated radio show "On With Mario"; country music icon Trace Adkins; and stars of TruTV's Impractical Jokers, Sal Vaulcano, Brian "O" Quinn and James "Murr" Murray. The entertainment will feature performances by Harry Connick Jr., New Power Generation, 610, The Victory Belles, Party Crashers and The Mixed Nuts. New Power Generation, the backing band for Prince through 1990s and 2000s, will perform a "non-stop musical kaleidoscope of the most iconic chart-topping hits from eras of Prince's career.

Tickets for the Orpheuscapade that follows the parade are on sale now for $179 online at www.kreweoforpheus.com and by phone at 504-7200. The black tie event starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until 3 a.m. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155765245680870&type=1&l=59fc19e51c

LA Appleseed's 10th Annual Good Apple Gala at the Ace Hotel

Louisiana Appleseed's 10th Annual Good Apple Gala was indeed a celebration. The champagne was flowing and the food and birthday cake was delicious at the Ace Hotel.

The Gala honored the recent pro-bono lawyers and three community members whose efforts to advance social justice have garnered the coveted title of the 2019 Good Apple Honoree: Gayle Benson of the Benson Enterprises, Louisiana State Senator JP Morrell and U.S. Eastern District Judge Jay Zainey. Over 200 prominent members of the legal, financial, and business communities joined the celebration.

NOBA's Celebration of 50 years with Evening of Stars
Gregory Curtis of the Windsor Court with Jenny Hamilton, Director of the New Orleans Ballet Association

Dressed in gold to commemorate the fabulous 50th anniversary of our beloved New Orleans Ballet Association, I adored the spectacular presentation of Evening of Stars at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. It was indeed a stellar celebration of 50 years of “Bringing Dance to Life” in New Orleans.

NOBA kicked off this golden anniversary year with a glittering, star-studded performance! This elegant evening dazzled with a program of classical masterpieces from “Swan Lake,” “Cinderella” and “Paquita” to sleek contemporary and stylish ballroom works performed by some of the world’s preeminent artists, including international guest stars, Adiarys Almeida and Taras Domitro, formerly of National Ballet of Cuba; Jerome and Laura Tisserand, Lindsi Dec, and Karel Cruz of Pacific Northwest Ballet; Yuan Yuan Tan and Tiit Helimets of San Francisco Ballet. NBC “World of Dance” and US champion ballroom stars Denys Drozdyuk and Antonina Skobina electrified the audience with Latin sizzle.

Celebrity guests introduced from the stage were former New York City Ballet Principal Dancer, Wendy Whelan and Desmond Richardson, co-founder of world-renowned Complexions Contemporary Ballet.

I am so sorry that couldn't stay for the delicious and glamorous sit-down dinner on stage presided over by Louisiana First Lady Donna Hutto Edwards. I also missed mixing and mingling with the stars and the fabulous music by Julio and Cesar.

Krewe of Stars-The Stars Shine on Bourbon St. Show Ball 3

The Krewe of Stars, of  which I am a proud member, staged its Show Ball 3 at the fabulous Jefferson Performing Arts Center.

The Krewe’s annual ball and tableau that featured 2019 Queen Chris Owens & King Mark Davison was spectacular! The theme was “The Stars Shine on Bourbon Street” and they sure did on Saturday night! Krewe co-Captains Carl Mack on his xylophone and Marshall Harris on vocals entertained the audience with some wonderful songs. Also entertaining on vocals were Becky Allen, Linda Wright, Louis Dudoussat (channeling Louis Prima’s “Just a Gigolo”) and Max Bernardi.

A tribute to Bourbon Street Burlesque was performed by Trixie Minx and Angie Z, and Lana O’Day, Natasha Sinclair and Monique Michaels Alexander offered up an entertaining in-drag tribute to Club My Oh My. Miss Gogi and Bobby Skinner performed a humorous skit about Ruthie the Duck Lady to the tune of “Rubber Duckie.” Musical guests were The Yat Pack and Jim Walpole on piano.

Outgoing 2018 Queen and King Irma Thomas and Al "Carnival Time" Johnson were onstage as well and they graced the audience with a duet on “Carnival Time.”

Vietnamese Tet 2019 Celebration

Dressed in gold and red to bring me luck, I attended a lovely and delicious soiree hosted by my darling friend Thanh Nga Nguyen at the Fairground to celebrate the upcoming Vietnamese New Year Lunar or TET.

The Lunar New Year is a celebration of spring and the upcoming year. The Tet holiday starts on the beginning of a new year based on the Chinese lunar calendar. On the Gregorian calendar, the Lunar New Year falls between the end of January and the middle of February.

Vietnamese New Year 2019 will be on Tuesday, February 5, 2019.
According to Vietnam zodiac, Vietnamese New Year 2019 is a year of the “pig”
Darlings, before I share all the upcoming fun events, I want to make sure that you put in your calendar 🍸13

ALGIERS TRICENTENNIAL

Because the Algiers story is often left out of the New Orleans historical narrative, Algiers will celebrate its Tricentennial in 2019. The goal is to tell the story of Algiers - from its beginnings in 1719 to the War of 1812, to the rail and maritime industries in the early 19th century to the varied communities that comprise Algiers today. The celebration is about building pride in Algiers, educating and entertaining people through our culture and creating oral histories that will remain forever.

As we honor our past, we can inspire our future through economic, educational and cultural programs and advocating for appropriate development in communities throughout Algiers.

February 2
Several public events and activities are being planned. Some of the major ones are as follows:
Zulu in Algiers - 2019 King Zulu and Algiers native George Rainey will hold a "flag raising" ceremony and reign over a special day of fun being planned for February 2, 2019, near the ferry terminal in Old Algiers.
