A Toast to 2019 - January 1-8 - Happy New Year - Twelve Night Parades and Les Miserables

Darlings,

Wishing you a very Happy, Healthy, Peaceful and Prosperous 2019!

This year marks new beginning for most of us and I am feeling that I am slowing down. Would you believe that I was very content to stay home last night discovering the magic of my new addition to the Bergen Family? Lolita Bergen is my new puppy. She just turned three years old and is a mix of Applehead Chihuahua and a Jack Russell Terrier.  She is very sweet, smart and definitely a lap dog. I feel blessed!

Of course, the highlight of my week was when Lolita Bergen became part of my family prior to the New Year. I feel the presence and approval of Chiquita Linda.

I was invited and attended a few fun soirees that included the following:

Bizou Wines' Holiday Party

Every year, I look forward to attending the awesome and delicious Holiday Party hosted by my darling longtime friend, winemaker Dr. James Moises, owner of Bizou Wines . It was so good to see a lot of my friends who are dedicated consumers of wines and champagnes!

Starlight Race 2018
OMG, What a fun and very memorable evening! Thanks to my darling friends, Thanh Nga Nguyen who invited me, and Donna Hamsher who accompanied and drove me. I had a fabulous fun time. Different from Donna who, after seeing the horses at the paddock, won almost every race. I didn't win anything but it was fun anyway.

It didn’t matter because I enjoyed so much running into longtime friends that included Gregory Smith, formerly of the Bourbon Orleans and now the Maitre'd of the Club House. He introduced me to talented Dwight L. Sherman Sr. Executive Chef of the Fairgrounds. It was great to also see my longtime friend Mark A. Conner, Sr. Director of Marketing at the Fairgrounds. I also saw my darling friend Murray Valene who had one of the horses running in the ninth race. Dr. Erin O'Sullivan Fleming was with her lovely family and also had a horse in one of the races.

It was great seeing my longtime friend Julio Guichard of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and his lovely wife and Christian Champagne and many others.

The New Orleans Spring Fiesta will take place March 29 and 30 and April 6 and 7, 2019.

Darlings please put in your calendar that the next Round Table Luncheon will be on Friday, January 18 and will Salute the 2019 Mardi Gras Season. (more details to follow)

I was delighted to see my darling longtime friends, Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, his wife and Mayor LaToya Cantrell and her husband on national TV to welcome the year 2019 and the dropping of the Fleur De Lis on the roof of the Jax Brewery in Jackson Square.

I enjoyed very much being a member of the committee for the Tricentennial of New Orleans and it was indeed a very special, historical year.

2019 is going to start for me by attending a few celebrations but I think the highlight of this week is going to be  January 6, the Twelfth Night (feast of Epiphany that marks the beginning of the 2019 Carnival Season.

Three parades will herald the 2019 Mardi Gras Season on Sunday, January 6, 2019

1th Annual Joan of Arc Parade

SUNDAY January 6, 2019, 7 p.m. (NOTE TIME AND ROUTE CHANGE)

Parade start at the corner of Bienville and Front, north up Bienville, right to go east on Chartres, pause at the corner of Conti and Chartres for royalty toasts from the Historic New Orleans Collection Williams Foundation balcony, continue on Chartres, pause at St. Louis Cathedral for the blessing of the sword, continue on Chartres, right onto Ursuline, right to go west on Decatur, passing the Joan of Arc statue, end at Washington Artillery Park (sidewalk amphitheater across from Jackson Square) with the crowning and king cake ceremony.
Route map of the 11th annual Joan of Arc parade Sunday January 6, 2019 at 7 p.m. Note change in starting point to Bienville and Front.
Joyeux Anniversaire, Jeanne d’Arc!
Celebrating St. Joan of Arc’s birthday and Twelfth Night, this annual  walking parade is a medieval-themed theatrical procession, inspired by Joan’s time in 1400s France.  Joan of Arc liberated the citizens of Orleans, France, from a British siege in her first victory in 1429—resulting in her moniker “The Maid of Orleans.” Our parade honors our own unofficial patron saint, The Maid of New Orleans: the beloved  golden French Quarter statue, a gift to the City of New Orleans from France in the 1950s, and our French history and heritage. It’s a short, family-friendly parade — quirky, whimsical and spiritual.
Bring king cake to share. The parade typically starts on time at 7 sharp, makes a few pauses for a bit of medieval pageantry, and ends around 8:30 p.m:
  • 6:45 p.m. City proclamation at the corner of Bienville and Front by Council Member Kristin Gisleson Palmer
  • toasts from the Historic New Orleans Collection and Vincent Sciama, Consul General of France in New Orleans, from the Williams Research Center balcony at 400 Chartres
  • a sword blessing at Saint Louis Cathedral by The Very Reverend Father Philip Landry
  • a pause to sing Happy Birthday at the Joan of Arc statue
  • the crowning of the king and king cake ceremony at the end at Washington Artillery Park.  Bring your own king cake to eat your first king cake along with the king and Joan
  • The Phunny

     Phorty Phellows Streetcar Ride

  • The Phunny Phorty Phellows load the streetcar at the Willow Streetcar Bar on S. Carrollton. From there, the krewe rides the streetcar down S. Carrollton to St. Charles Avenue.
  • The streetcar makes Lee Circle to Canal before heading back down St. Charles.
  • The streetcar then heads back down St. Charles to S. Carollton—where they end at Willow Streetcar Barn.

Every year on Twelfth Night, the Phunny Phorty Phellows (or PPP) herald the arrival of Carnival by participating in a “Carnival Countdown.” Afterwards, they load up on a streetcar for a merry ride up and down the entire St. Charles Streetcar line. Crowds gather along the tracks to cheer, wave and catch the first beads of Mardi Gras.
The Phellows first took to the streets in 1878 (with a long break that lasted from 1898 until 1981). Because humor and whimsy have been part of the Phunny Phorty tradition since way back, krewe members often dress in satiric costumes that reflect topical issues. Their motto is: A little nonsense now and then is cherished by the best of men.”
The Queen and “Boss” (the Phunny Phorty Phellow’s version of a King) are determined very democratically on the streetcar ride itself. (The title of goes to whoever finds the babies in the two king cakes that are passed around as they toast and drink champagne.) The Storyville Stompers is the official band for the streetcar ride and Benny Grunch and the Bunch play at the Coronation Ball. The krewe takes pride in sending out lovely ball invitations and uses dance cards reminiscent of those from the 1800s.
Société Des Champs Elysée 7:30

Des Champs Elysée, or The Not So Secret Society of the Elysian Fields, is a new Mardi Gras Krewe that will roll out on the Twelfth Night. This band of 40 will float through the French Quarter beginning at N. Rampart and Esplanade. If all pans out, the new Krewe on the block will cross paths with the Phunny Phorty Phellows. After weaving through the Central Businesses District the parade will make its way back to the Rampart Streetcar line until it hits St. Claude and will continue on until the end of Elysian Fields.
