A Toast to Carnival 2019, the Saints & NOLA January 15-22: “Ella Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award Gala/ Round Table Luncheon/“Bal Masqué” and More

Darlings,

The city of New Orleans is euphoric and enjoying the fabulous victory of our Saints against the reigning Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles who the Saints beat 20-14. I cannot wait to see the game on Sunday, January 20 at the Superdome when the Saints take on the Los Angeles Rams for the NFC Championship. The winner goes to the Super Bowl in Atlanta on February 3.

Geaux Saints!  Happy 40th birthday Drew Brees

It’s Carnival Time and, as such, I attended a few fun activities:

Annual Rex Den Float Showing

I missed the annual presentation of the Pro Bono Publico Foundation's check presentation to the schools, but I attended the special event for the members of the Friends of the Cabildo. The check was presented by former Rex, Dr. Stephen Hales, for $1 million to The Students of the Greater New Orleans Community.

The historic Rex Organization opened its doors for a special viewing of its float den before Mardi Gras Day 2019 for members and their guests. We got to see the 2019 floats up close and enjoy a tour of the den, Rex Museum and Rex Mart.

The Speakeasy CAMAN Ball 2019

The Ball of The Military Officers’ Wives’ Club’s Krewe of CAMAN (Coast Guard, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy.) was so much fun!

I loved the theme – “The Speakeasy of the Roaring Twenties.” I was the guest of my darling friends and former Queens, Kathi Callahan and Janet Nagelin. I was in heaven because I love a man in a uniform and there were plenty of them last night looking so gorgeous.

The Monarchs for 2019 were Colonel Hackbarth (USMC) and Sadie Lowe (Coast Guard spouse). The king got unmasked after the grand march and revealed his identity! What a fun and memorable Carnival evening.

I also enjoyed attending these other fun events:

WYES 's Pre -Screening Reception of “Victoria”

OMG what a fun evening at WYES' Pre -Screening Reception of “Victoria” including sparkling wine along with sweet & savory bites before the screening of the first episode of “Victoria” MASTERPIECE. I am an Anglophile and loved the first season of Masterpiece's presentation of “Victoria” and I was not disappointed with the action-filled new episode.
Not to be missed on Sundays. I just cannot wait for the other episodes.

Rodrigue’s American Dream: Celebrating 30 Years in New Orleans

In my way to the CAMAN BALL, I stopped briefly to exhibit of George Rodrigue’s “American Dream: Celebrating 30 Years in New Orleans (1989-2019)” at Rodrigue Studio (730 Royal Street). The reception featured live music on the Rodrigue Steinway from the NOCCA Alumni Jazz Band, passed hors d’oeuvres from Palate and Wendy Rodrigue, widow of the late artist, gave a presentation of the exhibition.

I always enjoy seeing Wendy and the art legacy of my beloved friend George Rodrigue.

A Brief History of the Aztecs

I stopped briefly at the fascinating and informative presentation of “A Brief History of the Aztecs” by Archeologist Diego Matadamas Gomora at the Mexican Cultural Institute.
If you love legendary artist Diego Rivera and his talented wife, artist Frida Kahlo, you will enjoy tremendously the beautiful black and white photos exhibit “Diego and Frida - A Halfway Smile.”

Darlings, I do not have to tell you that the highlight of my week will be hosting the first Round Table Luncheon of 2019, which will take place on Friday, January 18 at noon in the historic ballroom of the Bourbon Orleans Hotel.

Mardi Gras Time will at the festive luncheon will salute the 2019 Carnival Season and, as such, the following Royalty will be present: legendary entertainer Chris Owens and Mark Davison, 2019 Monarchs of the Krewe of Stars; Gayle Dellinger, Queen 2019 of the Krewe of Cork; Mayra Pineda, 2019 Queen of the Krewe of Mardi Gras Mambo; and last but not least, Lolita Bergen, 2019 Grand Marshal of the Mystic Krewe of Barkus.

Featured as special guest speakers are Arthur Hardy, Mardi Gras historian and publisher of the annual Mardi Gras Guide, artist Andrea Mistretta, who will unveil her Mardi Gras 2019 poster and original painting, framed on easel and titled “Enchantress: New Orleans.”

In addition, Wayne Phillips, Curator of the Louisiana State Museum, and Alyssa Fletchinger, Vice President of Plush Appeal (The Mardi Gras Spot) will also speak. Live entertainers will be talented, beloved Becky Allen, Marshall Harris, Carl Mack and pianist Jim Walpole.

The $65, all-inclusive price includes a delicious, 3-course gourmet luncheon:

First Course-Caesar Salad
Entree: Braised Short Rib Red Wine Sauce, Roasted Potatoes & Haricots Verts
Dessert: King Cake
