A Toast to New Orleans July 31- August 6 : Coolinary New Orleans/ Newsie/ NO Antique Forum/ Satchmo SummerFest/ White Linen Night and more.........

Darlings,

Last week my air conditioner broke down and I discovered that, even though I am from the Caribbean, as I get older, I have less tolerance to the heat and I ended up staying for few nights at my darling friend Michael Langford's  place in the French Quarter. Fortunately, I bought a new A/ C and life is a lot easier.

I was so preoccupied about staying cool that I missed a few parties and only attended these fun events:

You Night 2018 Cancer Survivor Runway Show & Celebration

You Night 2018 Cancer Survivor Runway Show & Celebration at the CAC was magical. I really applaud and admire Class 2018 who was composed of the 19 women who completed the six-month, You Night Empowerment Training Program. These women have been given skills that help them overcome the physical and psychological challenges of cancer treatment through teamwork, coaching and professional modeling courses, while building strong interpersonal bonds with other survivors. The New Orleans Class of 2018 participants were:

Ann Martinez, Michelle Ripoll, Michelle Shove, Shemal McKnight, Patricia Laubenstein, Lori Upton, Kristin Gonzalez, Pamela Fields, Laurie Bercegeay, Antoinette Bradstreet, Donna Thomas, Pat Quintini, Marty Looney, Lesley Rubenstein, Monica Campuzano, Mariann Teacher, Robin Smith, Louise Poche, Leslie Horare. Congratulations to all of you!

I also attended briefly (since it was sold-out), the  Celebration of the  125th Anniversary of the Blue Room at the Roosevelt Hotel. It brought me a lot of fabulous memories of the wonderful international stars that performed at the intimate venue and my darling friends Maitre D's Oliver and later Tommy Andrade!

The Satchmo SummerFest Kickoff Party

The sold-out, always-fun Satchmo Kickoff Party takes place at the beautiful, historic Omni Royal Orleans on Thursday, August 2.

August 3-5

SATCHMO SUMMERFEST

A three day celebration of New Orleans’ own Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, New Orleans couldn't pass our native son's birthday without a grand affair. Held at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint, Satchmo Summerfest celebrates Pops' birthday with music, food, and a second-line parade appropriately dubbed the "Satchmo Strut." The fest also includes seminars, discussions, and speakers focused on Louis Armstrong and his contributions to New Orleans - and the world.

The nominal daily admission of $5 (children 12 and under are free) helps support local musicians and pay for the event. Admission also provides access to the Satchmo Symposium and Pops' Playhouse for Kids, both located inside the museum. For more details, including the Satchmo Symposium schedule found at this link: www.satchmosummerfest.org/home/special-events/

The festival takes place at the Old U.S. Mint, located on the edge of the French Quarter between the French Market and Esplanade Avenue.  Like the festival’s namesake, the main focus of Satchmo Fest is music. Many of New Orleans’ top musicians perform on several stages outdoors, often paying tribute to Armstrong and his music.

Festival-goers can also sign up for seminars and lectures by knowledgeable music authorities, or attend smaller concerts inside the Old Mint. For an added culinary bonus, New Orleans’ restaurants set up shop around the festival for easy access to some of the city’s best food.
