A Toast to New Orleans March 28--April 2: Happy Easter and don't miss the East Parades 2018!

AT " Pennies from Heaven"  decorated auditorium  at the Old US> Mint

Darlings,

Greetings from the beautiful Emerald Coast of Destin, Florida where, for the first in over three decades, I finally going to spend almost a week with my brother Lorenzo Bergen at his timeshare condo. I usually just have a very brief sojourn!

If you followed my blog, you know I have been going  like a EverReady Bunny. My only complaint is that I lack a clone because I hate when I could not to go to all the events that I wanted to go to. It was frustrating to miss going to the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival's presentation of the Women in Tennessee Williams' plays or missing the LPO's concert of Frank Sinatra music.  I also missed going to the Hogs Festival and most of the Fashion Week events. It sucks!

Darlings, I am resting in Destin in anticipation of moving out of my condo. Thanks to St. Joseph, the condo at 811 Marigny Street is under contract and I am looking forward to renting or leasing an affordable, spacious 3-bedroom, 2-bath apartment or house in the Marigny or Esplanade Ridge. So please, if you know of one let me know ASAP.

Before I left to come to Destin, Florida I attend a myriad of very memorable events, including the funeral of  our beloved entrepreneur, philanthropist and professional team owner, Tom Benson. May his Soul RIP!
Funeral for Tom Benson
Darlings, Mother Nature, the Almighty and the Saints above blessed us with the glorious weather to pay our respects and send one of his Saints to Heaven. May Tom Benson, RIP!  The service was just lovely and I saw many of my darling friends. After the funeral, we second-lined to the courtyard of the Ursuline Convent where a delicious buffet followed. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155122172825870.1073743125.581200869&type=1&l=d364fc895a
Tricentennial: Evolution of New Orleans Fashion
Darlings, as you know, New Orleans Fashion Week went on until March 24.
Last night I was fortunate to have attended a fabulous evening at the Jazz Market Place titled Tricentennial: Evolution of New Orleans Fashion by New Orleans Fashion Week.
In conjunction with the City of New Orleans celebrating its 300 years of creating and stewarding the city's traditions, New Orleans Fashion Week added to the celebration with a special edition that showcased the evolution of New Orleans fashion. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155116844485870.1073743121.581200869&type=1&l=659d4b63ac
THNOC and LPO's Music of the City
Maestro Carlo Miguel Prieto listening to  talented clarinet-player  Doreen Ketchens
Darlings, The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra presented the twelfth installment of Musical Louisiana: America's Cultural Heritage "Music of the City," a free concert featuring Carlos Miguel Prieto, conductor; Norman Robinson, narrator; Doreen Ketchens, clarinet; Davide Mariano, organ and piano; and Dara Rahming, soprano was, as in the past, spectacular. The historic and beautiful St. Louis Cathedral was the setting with a standing crowd.
The longest standing ovation was achieved by our French Quarter clarinet player, talented Doreen Ketchens!
DECODING THE PURITY OF AN ICON

The exhibition DECODING THE PURITY OF AN ICON
by talented  Mexican-American artist Belinda Flores-Shinshillas at the Mexican Cultural Institute was fascinating. The New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation and the Consulate of Mexico in New Orleans, in collaboration with the Arts Council of New Orleans and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies of Tulane University, invited the public you to the exhibition of my darling friend , talented Mexican-American Artist Belinda Flores-Shinshillas.This exhibit marked the opening program for The Mexican Cultural Institute of the Consulate of Mexico

Shangri-La Social Club Mad Hatter's Luncheon
WOW! Judging chapeaus at the Shangri-La Social Club Mad Hatter's Luncheon at Andrea's Restaurant was not easy but I loved it. Congratulations to all the winners of the Hat Contest. I always enjoy seeing other women wearing hats. My darling friend Sammy Steele was not there but he sent a beautiful collection of hats for the auction. The talented Hautes Dames had their exquisite creations for sale and I wanted every one of them.
The food was delicious and I enjoyed the flowing champagne and all for a great cause that will benefit the young Scholars at Kidd Morial Creative School.
Louisiana Restaurant Association's King of Crawfish at Generation Hall
I was in heaven when I attended the “King of Crawfish” with the Louisiana Restaurant Association at Generations Hall. I had the opportunity to savor and vote for delicious dishes prepared by some of my favorite restaurants. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155121564435870.1073743124.581200869&type=1&l=6d6b35ae15

Juan Pablo Linares & Martine Chaisson Linares -Chair of the Gala

The New Orleans Film Society Gala: Midnight in the Garden at the lovely, spacious courtyard of the Wilkinson-Bruno Home on South Carrolton Avenue was spectacular!
I saw so many old-time friends including talented actor Lynn Whitfield. Congratulations to Valerie Grubb and the Chair, Martine Chaisson Linares, for a very memorable evening.
I was in heaven drinking Piper-Heidsieck Champagne and eating Oyster Hour featuring Acme Oyster House - French Quarter and Cajun Caviar among other incredible delicious cuisine.
Set in the lush, cinematic gardens of a private home built in 1849, New Orleans Film Society’s 2018 Gala was a night replete with gourmet dishes, craft cocktails, and unforgettable entertainment to support independent cinema in New Orleans. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155126111500870.1073743127.581200869&type=1&l=5d4433f07a
Louisiana Museum Foundation's Jump, Jive, an' Jazzin
Darlings I am so happy that I did not go out on Friday night because Saturday night was a social marathon for me. I started it at the fabulous Louisiana Museum Foundation's “Jump, Jive, an' Jazzin!”

Bon Bon Vivant joined the fun as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's opening act at the Old U.S. Mint, 400 Esplanade Ave. I am sorry that i could not stay to see them perform. All proceeds from this Gala will benefit the Louisiana Museum Foundation in their mission to support 300 years of Louisiana history and culture
Stella and Stanley Shouting Contest
At the Stanley and Stella Contest with Anne Williams, niece of Tennessee Williams. Her Step-Dad was Dakin and Peggy Scott Laborde.
I always love the shouting for the “Stella!”/”Stanley!” Shouting Contest at the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival at Jackson Square. A few years ago I participated in the shouting for Stanley and I won. I did it in Spanish and it was a very memorable experience. This year two of my darling friends participated: Edgar Faber and reporter Kenny Lopez of News with a Twist.

In my way to the Film Gala I stopped briefly at 730 Royal Street, the former site of Bergen gallery, now the spectacular Rodrigue gallery where an exquisite Rodrigue's Swirling Vision: Opening Reception was taking place.

I love attending the St. Anna's Easter Parade:
Glorious weather greeted the traditional Palm Sunday Second-Line parade organized by St. Anna Episcopal Church on Esplanade. The procession of palms recalls for Christians Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and begins the religious period called Holy Week culminating the following Sunday with Easter.
St. Anna's Episcopal Church led off the procession with The Storyville Stompers Brass Band as it wanders through the Tremé, Marigny, and down Esplanade.(check out the video)
This  week that started on Monday is going be very light since it is Holy Week, so enjoy it.
I will be returning to New Orleans just in time to attend, on Sunday, the annual Chris Owens' Easter Parade.
Enjoy your week and I sure will try!

Sunday -Easter Parades

In the city that loves to celebrate with a parade, there are three of them in the French Quarter on Easter Sunday, all of which are free for the public to observe. There are other ways New Orleanians celebrate Easter, as well, and visitors – especially those with families – can partake in them. Many of the city’s most famous restaurants serve special brunches, marking the end of Lent, and in various locales, Easter egg hunts are held for the kids.

Here are some of the highlights of Easter every year in New Orleans:
Parades
Easter Sunday’s lineup of parades starts early that morning with The Historic French Quarter Easter Parade from Antoine’s Restaurant at 9:45 a.m. to St. Louis Cathedral for 11:00 a.m. Mass. The parade, consisting largely of mule-drawn carriages and old convertibles, makes its leisurely, roundabout way through the French Quarter, handing out stuffed Easter bunnies to the kids, along with other trinkets.

Following Mass, participants in the parade promenade to Jackson Square opposite the Cathedral to show off their Easter bonnets and other finery before returning to Antoine’s. Awards are given out for the best Easter bonnets, Easter baskets and overall Easter attire.

Later, around 1:00 p.m. is the Chris Owens French Quarter Easter Parade. This tradition, which began back in the early 1980s, features renowned French Quarter singer, dancer and all-around entertainer Chris Owens as the Grand Duchess. She stands proudly on her gaily decorated float, assisted by elegantly attired attendants while decked out in one of her stunning, tight-fitting outfits.
I will be at the Chris Owens's French Quarter Parade as the guest of my darling friend Sammy Steele .
French Quarter Easter Parade, LLC proudly presents the 35th Annual Chris Owens French Quarter Easter Parade on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at 1:00 p.m.
The celebration starts at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel Ballroom at 11:00 a.m. with a Hat Contest, Silent Auction, and Entertainment. Riders will then hop on the floats and ride through the heart of the historic French Quarter.

The parade will begin at the corner of St. Louis and Royal, continue down Royal to Canal to St. Phillip Street and conclude on St. Louis and Royal at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel. Following the parade, revelers can enjoy a Champagne Brunch and dancing. The parade will be complete with colorful floats, marching bands, beads, Easter trinkets, and plenty of eager revelers.

As the Grand Duchess of the Easter Parade, Chris Owens will be dressed in her personally designed Easter ensemble, complimented by her beautiful and exotic Easter bonnet. This parade is a sight you’ll never forget!

Then, later in the afternoon, is yet another parade, the Gay Easter Parade, put on by the city’s GLBT community. Being nowhere near as wild or extravagant as a Mardi Gras parade, but rather family-friendly, the Gay Easter Parade takes a leisurely route through the French Quarter, passing every gay bar and many gay-owned restaurants and retail shops. The paraders ride horse-drawn carriages or floats while wearing showy versions of their Easter Sunday finest. Don’t be surprised if you see a gaggle of motorcycle dudes in leather and Easter bonnets might roar by. Spectators can expect to see (and catch!) plenty of beads and other throws.

There is also an annual Easter Bonnet Contest at Good Friends Bar, a GLBT neighborhood bar at the corner of Dauphine and St. Ann streets in the French Quarter. Anyone can join in and some of the bonnet entries can get pretty outlandish. The crowd votes for the winners and you can almost certainly expect to hear impromptu renditions of Irving Berlin’s classic song for the occasion, “Easter Parade.” For information call (504) 566-7191.
