A Toast to New Orleans April 24- 30 : LPO's Swing in the Oaks/ NO Jazz and Heritage Festival and more ....

Celebrating my birthday this morning at  breakfast at Coulis.
Darlings, O what a historic and awesome week!

This past week was probably the most hectic and exciting week for me in a long time.  Not only did we celebrate New Orleans Tricentennial, but also Tricentennial NOLA Navy Week. Tall Ships New Orleans 2018, The Opening of Exhibition "Recovered  Memories: Spain, New Orleans and the American Revolution” at the Cabildo, Prix  d’Elegance Luncheon & Fashion Show” plus  the New Orleans Opera 75th Anniversary Celebration and the Inauguration Ceremony of the Mexican Cultural Institute.

I was very fortunate and honored to be invited to spend Wednesday night aboard the Navy Ship USS Kearsarge - the third Wasp-class amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy named in honor of USS Kearsarge, a sloop-of-war that gained fame hunting Confederate raiders during the American Civil War. The sloop was named for Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire. I was flown by helicopter to the Gulf of Mexico where we navigated and enter the Port of New Orleans on Thursday to participate in NOLA Navy Week 2018

From there on, there were more soirees than I physically attend.  But, of those that I did attend, I loved every one of them. I hope you will enjoy the photolinks:

Farewell to David Teich, GM of Windsor Ct
Darlings, I was invited to a very special Farewell Party for one of my darling friends for the past 9 years. Veuve Cliquot and delicious food was served to say goodbye to David Teich and his lovely wife Jordan and his darling son Sam Teich. David was the General Manager of the Windsor Court for the longest time - nine years and I met him the first day he stepped out to go along with Gregory Curtis, the HR Director, to an event a Canal Place. David and his family will be returning to Charleston. South Carolina. David and his family will be missed by all of us that got to know them. Wishing them the best in their former home. LOVE YOU! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155178628930870.1073743142.581200869&type=1&l=61c6ec1648

Presentation of Mardi Gras artist, Andrea Mistretta to Mayor-elect LaToya Cantrell
Last Monday, I had the pleasure of introducing talented illustrator, Andrea Mistretta (The Queen of Mardi Gras Posters), to our Mayor-elect LaToya Cantrell at the Transition Team Office at Xavier University.

Andrea, who I discovered in 1985 and published her first Mardi Gras poster in 1986, has been doing a Mardi Gras poster for 33 years. Andrea presented a signed giclee of her Mardi Gras 2018 commemorating the 300-year, New Orleans Tricentennial to LaToya Cantrell along with her book, stamps and bottles that Andrea designed for Mardi Gras King Cake Vodka and Fleur de Lis Vodka produced in France by Lucky Players.

Andrea was supposed to present these gifts at The Round Table Luncheon Saluting the 2018 Carnival Season but LaToya was unable to make it. While in New Orleans she also met with Wayne Phillips, Curator of Costumes and Textiles at Louisiana State Museum.

2018 Prix D' Elegance

On Wednesday, April 18, 2018, Men and Women of Fashion honored 10 men and 10 women as well as Hall of Fame award recipients Henry Shane and Mary Katherine Lonatro-Tusa at the annual Prix d'Elegance Awards Luncheon and Fashion Show at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel. The proceeds of the luncheon will benefit the Ballet Resource and Volunteer Organization (BRAVO) and the New Orleans Ballet Association nationally-recognized tuition-free education programs.

USS Kearsarge at Navy Week 19-22

My body is aching this morning from all the steps that I had to climb aboard the USS Kearsarge but I loved it and I am grateful to the US Navy for hosting me in such an incredible and memorable experience.

New Orleans Opera's 75th Anniversary Celebration
Soiree 75- The cocktail reception prior to the Friday evening performance at 6:30 pm was just lovely. The event featured delicious food provided by The Country Club New Orleans, live painting by artist Andrew Wilkie, historic memorabilia giveaways, and an exhibit of New Orleans Opera History. The Diamond Jubilee Concert at Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts on Friday and Sunday featured performances by international stars and leading Louisiana talent, including: Raymond Aceto, Luretta Bybee, Casey Candebat, Leslie Castay, Ivan Griffin, Paul Groves, Kathleen Halm, Daveda Karanas, Angela Mannino, Sarah Jane McMahon, Lucas Meachem, Chauncey Packer, and more. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155185204590870.1073743145.581200869&type=1&l=739fe45b3d

Recovered Memories Opening Gala
Recovered Memories Opening Gala Friday, April 20 at the Cabildo.
Last Friday we celebrated the Louisiana Museum Foundation’s first Tricentennial event with the opening of “Recovered Memories.” Organized by Iberdrola in association with the Louisiana State Museum, this magnificent 7,000 square foot exhibition features hundreds of historic artifacts, documents, costumes and works of art from Spanish and U.S. museums, archives and private collections. It tells the story of Spain’s influence on the development of New Orleans and contribution to the founding of our country, in the building that once served as the seat of Spanish Colonial Louisiana. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155185214610870.1073743146.581200869&type=1&l=db30439ff7

WYES Studio 12 Gala

I was too tired to boogie the night away but everyone else did while supporting WYES on Friday, April 20 during the WYES STUDIO 12 GALA presented by Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation. '70s attire was encouraged! This themed evening (a spin on the iconic Studio 54) was the hottest and most exclusive “club” in town that night, beginning with a Patron Party and followed by the Gala. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155185233010870.1073743147.581200869&type=1&l=320e08eea5

New Orleans Tricentennial International Welcome Ceremony

Beautiful sunny skies greeted the dignitaries and the invited guests to the New Orleans Tricentennial International Welcome Ceremony at the historic Jackson Square. It was a really spectacular ceremony that included the United States Marine Corps Band; the First Lady of Haiti, Her Excellency Martine Moise; Most Reverend Gregory Aymond, Archbishop of New Orleans; and many ambassadors and consuls, in addition to the Honorable John Bel Edwards , Governor of the State of Louisiana and his wife Donna. Also on hand were my old time-darling friends, Mickey and Former Mayor Sidney Barthelemy, Michelle and Former Mayor Marc MorialMayor Mitch Landrieu and his wife Cheryl, Mayor-elect LaToya Cantrell , and many other dignitaries. The cultural presentation was awesome and my darling friend talented Mark Romig, was the CEO of the 2018 NOLA Foundation. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155185781685870.1073743148.581200869&type=1&l=3b29f0af06

Inauguration Ceremony of the Mexican Cultural Institute
Darlings, the opening of the Mexican Cultural Institute at the Mexican Consulate with the presence of the Hon. Ambassador of Mexico to the United States Geronimo Gutierrez Fernandez and his lovely wife was very memorable. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155186200370870.1073743149.581200869&type=1&l=84dd40ec89

2018 Tall Ships Celebration Gala

WOW - Mother Nature blessed us with glorious weather to enjoy the Tall Ships Tricentennial Gala at Woldenberg Park. Tall Ships celebrated NOLA’s 300th! On-deck and dockside black-tie gala in Woldenberg Park. Tickets included drinks, food, dancing and fireworks over the river. The delicious cuisine was by Dickie Brennan and Co. The spectacular 300th birthday cake was by Chef Tariq Hannah of Sucre. The live entertainment was by LA Spicehttps://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155186666985870.1073743150.581200869&type=1&l=4d7cb32383

Betsie Gambel's reception aboard the Oosterschelde
Darlings, I have been enjoying so much the visit of the Tall Ships to New Orleans and last night I was invited to attend a very special and lovely reception hosted by my darling friend, Betsie Gambel, President of Gambel Communications aboard the Tall Ship Oosterschelde from The Netherlands.

Betsie actually spent 4 nights aboard the Oosterschelde and sailed from Pensacola to New Orleans. This three-masted topsail schooner is the last remaining representative of the large fleet of schooners that sailed under the Dutch flag at the beginning of the 20th century. As the largest restored Dutch sailing ship, the Oosterschelde is a monument for Dutch shipbuilding and maritime navigation under sail.
Gambel Communications handled the PR for the Tall Ships visit to New Orleans. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155189336040870.1073743151.581200869&type=1&l=e1186cee73

First of One Time in New Orleans Mural
I enjoyed very much being present when the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation (NOTMC) revealed the first mural in the commissioned series from native visual artist Brandan “BMike” Odums. Covering the exterior wall at Little Gem Saloon, the mural pays homage to famed jazz musician Buddy Bolden and his band. Celebrating the city’s Tricentennial year, the “One Time, In New Orleans” mural series aims to encapsulate the stories and moments that have shaped the city’s 300-year history. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155190198135870.1073743152.581200869&type=1&l=eea1693aa7

The Cabildo
April 24, 2018 to July 9, 2018

"The legacy of Spanish influence on colonial Louisiana and the young United States of America echoes still today," said Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, whose office oversees the Cabildo and the Office of State Museum. "Spain's administration of colonial New Orleans - housed in the Cabildo, which will soon feature this incredible exhibition - was not just a footnote to the city's rise and development, but a significant demonstration of Spanish support for the American Revolution and the founding of our country." Recovered Memories: Spain, New Orleans, and the Support for the American Revolution showcases Spain's support for the American colonies prior to and during the Revolutionary War, as well as notable Spanish figures whose lives impacted the emerging new country. The exhibit takes the visitor on a chronological journey of Spanish-American relations, beginning with Spain's own Age of Enlightenment during the reign of Charles III through the times of European and American revolutions to the technological advancements at the turn of the 20th century.
A few highlights of what will be on display include Francisco de Goya's lyrical masterpiece from 1779, "The Swing," on loan from Madrid's Museo Nacional Del Prado and a Charles Wilson Peale painting of U.S. founding father Robert Morris, on loan from Philadelphia's Independence National Historical Park. These and other treasures are featured along with extraordinary works from the Louisiana State Museum's own significant holdings, such as centuries-old Spanish weapons and portrait paintings by José Salazar. Fascinating documents from the Louisiana Historical Center Collection will also be on display, including an oath of allegiance signed by the free black militia and an original broadside issued by Governor Alejandro O'Reilly as he asserted Spanish rule over colonial Louisiana in 1769.
