A Spring Toast to New Orleans-5/26-31 Round Table Luncheon/ Oyster Festival/ Birdfoot Festival & more...

Please make sure you open the links- your photo maybe in one of them!

Darlings,
This past week, New Orleans was the Toast of the Town as we celebrated the 23rd New Orleans Wine and Food Experience.Thousands of wine and food lovers gather each spring in New Orleans for one of this city's most extravagant rites of passage, the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience. The event spotlights the city's legendary restaurants along with fine wines from around the globe.
More than 250 wineries were typically represented during the five-day festival, with more than 800 vintages poured at a series of indoor and outdoor events. More than 100 of the city's fine restaurants took part in the Grand Tastings on Friday and Saturday.
On Wednesday, I began my NOWFE with an intimate wine dinner at Hotel Mazarin. I was so happy that I was able to join my fellow Corkians at the delicious dinner there. Chef Agnes Bellet did a superb menu that matched perfectly the wines with the dishes. I enjoyed so much meeting the winemaker of Estancia, Clay Brook, who reigned as the Grand Marshal of the Krewe of Cork for the annual Royal Street Stroll.
On Thursday, I had a ball at Vinola, Brennan's and the Royal Stroll. I did get wet but that did not dampen my spirit along with thousands that were there for the stroll. A true New Orleans “experience!” This definitive evening event of the NOWFE brings together New Orleans’ greatest gifts—rare antiques, fine art, live jazz, and stunning historic architecture, with the world’s most outstanding wines. I did not parade with the Krewe of Cork because of the rain but I stopped at many of the galleries. I missed not hosting a party like I used to for so many years at Bergen Gallery and then Casell Gallery.
Darlings, I am still salivating over the delicious award-winning culinary dishes that I savored at the annual NOWFE Grand Tastings on Friday and Saturday at the Convention Center. The bubbly and the wines were superb as well.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152725099560870.1073742457.581200869&type=1&l=d9c3c1da07
On Saturday, I enjoyed very much the two hours that I spent at the Grand Tasting. Unfortunately, I could not stay to see the crowning of the new Seafood King because I had to go back to work at Casell-Bergen gallery. I always enjoyed Saturday because I could listen to the cooking presentations and concentrate in tasting the award-winning dishes like I did.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152731132615870.1073742460.581200869&type=1&l=d79215bb83
I learned that my darling friend, Chef Michael Brewer, was crowned King of Louisiana Seafood on Saturday at the Louisiana Seafood's cook-off!

I concluded my NOWFE at the delicious and full of history "Rise & Dine: Brunch at Broussard's." I greeted the morning at Broussard's, founded in 1920, where Chef Neal Swidler prepared a morning feast with classic cocktails and traditional dishes.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152729150415870.1073742459.581200869&type=1&l=1f81f2aa1f
On Monday, Darlings, I could not think of a better way to spend Memorial Day but at the 50th Anniversary of Ruth's Chris Steak at the Fertel-Duke Mausoleum at Metairie Cemetery. I am sure Ruth would have approved of Lana Duke's celebration of 50 years of her legacy and sizzle at the historic cemetery! The entertainment by the Yat Pack, Ronnie Kole and Rockin’ Dopsie Jr. was awesome, as well as the delicious cuisine and the decadent libations!https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152731132615870.1073742460.581200869&type=1&l=d79215bb83

Darlings,I attended  The Bishop Perry Center's observation of National Heroes Week with a special Mass honoring members of law enforcement organizations throughout the Greater Metropolitan Area of New Orleans, including all police organizations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Mass was celebrated by the Rev. William F. Maestri, and took place,  at the Bishop Perry Center,1941 Dauphine Street. "The Mass will be in honor of men and women who have lost their lives or been injured as well as  men and women serving to protect us today," Father Maestri said. "The Patron Saint for law enforcement officers is St. Michael and we will be presenting St. Michael medals which have been blessed to those attending."
Following the Mass, volunteers of the Center were served a  delicious buffet luncheon of dishes prepared and contributed by the
This coming week is going to be another exciting one. For starters, I will be hosting, on May 27, the monthly Round Table Luncheon at noon at the JW Marriott, which will preview the upcoming FestiGals celebration in June. I am going to be joining forces with FestiGals founder Diane Lyons in hosting the popular luncheon in the Ile de France Room at the JW Marriott, 614 Canal Street. The luncheon begins at 12 noon, with networking at 11:30 a.m.
The theme for this month’s Round Table is FestiGals, in anticipation of New Orleans premier women-centric festival that will take place June 11-14, also at the JW Marriott. Speakers will include local artist Katrina Larson, whose clay sculpture “Boobalicious” will be featured in the FestiGals Bodacious Bras for a Cause live auction on June 13; Christine Millerfounder and CEO of Two Chicks Walking Tours-New Orleans and a member of The Pussyfooters dance troupe that are regulars in the FestiGals Stiletto Stroll (June 13); and Diane Lyons, who will share details about this year’s exciting 5th anniversary celebration of FestiGals. Entertainment will be provided by vocalist Valli Talbot, accompanied by pianist Jim Walpole.
The three-course luncheon prepared by French Master Chef Rene’ Bajeux will consist of Caprese Salad (vine ripened tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella w/basil pesto & extra virgin olive oil), Grilled Gulf Fish (over roasted seasonal vegetables & pearl couscous with a tangy green tomato chowchow) and Macerated Fruit, Berries & Grand Marnier Whipped Cream. Lunch is priced at $65 with advance reservations or $69.50 at the door and includes one glass of champagne upon arrival, and one glass of Beaulieu Vineyards Century Cellars Merlot or Chardonnay.
For reservations, contact Ari Strutton at 504-527-6724 or email ari.strutton@marriott.com or Margaret.hartz@marriott.com.
On Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31, the Sixth Annual New Orleans Oyster Festival will once again celebrate that local delicacy – the oyster – that is an integral part of the unique culinary culture of Louisiana.
More than 20 restaurants will be showing off the versatility of our region’s favorite bivalve at the New Orleans Oyster Festival. Launched in 2010 by representatives of the Louisiana oyster industry, the festival celebrates local oysters along with the men and women who harvest, process and cook them. Proceeds from the Festival support the Louisiana Oyster Industry, fisherman and their families. The festival raises money each year to support coastal restoration.
The Festival will once again feature oyster competitions including the Acme Oyster Eating Contest, the P&J Oyster Shucking Competition and the New Orleans Fish House Largest Oyster Contest.
Don’t forget that this is the week of the annual Birdfoot Festival of chamber music, starting later today, Tuesday, May 26, with a free lunchtime concert at the Contemporary Arts Center at 12:30 p.m. There will be a whole series of wonderful musical events right through till Saturday, May 30, when a final concert will be given at Tulane University’s Dixon Hall, followed by a reception with the performers.
In addition to hosting performers from all over the U.S. and seven countries, this year’s Birdfoot Festival will feature something new – spoken word poetry by award-winning local poet Kataalyst Alcindor. He will accompany some of the chamber performers on two separate occasions. Check out their schedule at www.birdfootfestival.org or their Facebook page athttps://www.facebook.com/BirdfootFestival or call (504) 451-6578. You can also read about it online from the New Orleans Advocateat http://www.theneworleansadvocate.com/beaucoup/12310301-171/with-youth-programs-spoken-word.
The Symphony Book Fair that benefits LPO Volunteers (formerly Symphony Volunteers, Inc.) will take place May 29-31 at the UNO Human Performance Center, 2000 Lakeshore Drive. It is the Annual book sale of about 100,000 items in many different categories, as well as art and collectibles. The special children’s sale is on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. The LPO Volunteers serves in support of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

On May 31 is the  Rhythm & Soul that benefits Jewish Family Service of Greater New Orleans at the Audubon Tea Room, 6500 Magazine St. The fundraiser will honor mother and daughter Marjorie Bissinger and Nancy Bissinger Timm, and will feature live music and a patron champagne reception. The Jewish Family Service of Greater New Orleans is a social service agency dedicated to preserving the wellbeing of individuals and families at every stage of life.

On May 31 is The Beauregard-Keyes House Spring Gala to benefit The Beauregard-Keyes House and Garden Museum. Guests will feast on a buffet and be entertained by Deacon John and the Ivories. The Beauregard-Keyes House and Garden Museum is a historic house museum operated by the Keyes Foundation, and their mission works for the preservation and maintenance of the Beauregard-Keyes House through educational programs and guided tours.
Also on Sunday, May 31, at 1:00 p.m. The Sociedad Espanola will be having its Paella Party at Juanita's. Chef Harold Angola will be preparing paella on site con ensalada, pan, flan y sangria.
And there’s one more great cultural event happening on that day: Lyrica Baroque, a local ensemble of five stellar classical musicians and a world-renowned opera singer, will be giving a two-hour performance at Tulane University’s Dixon Hall at 3 p.m. It is titled “Baroque and Beyond,” which is just what it says: Baroque chamber music, plus pieces from the Classical and Romantic musical periods.
Founded in 2010 by Jaren Phileo Atherholt, principal oboist for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the ensemble consists of Jaren, plus Joseph Meyer, violinist and former LPO Concertmaster; Jaren’s husband and LPO’s assistant principal bassoonist,Benjamin AtherholtDaniel Lelchuk, LPO’s assistant principal cellist; Canadian pianist Angela Park; and operatic soprano Sarah Jane McMahon, whose credits include leading roles at The Met as well as in her native New Orleans.
During Sunday’s performance, McMahon will sing selections from Schubert and Mozart, accompanied by Park on piano. The group will also perform pieces by C.P.E. Bach, Rossini and other renowned composers. The concert is in collaboration with New Orleans Friends of Music. You can read more about it in Dean Shapiro’s article in this coming Thursday’s New Orleans Advocate. The story will also be posted on The Advocate’s website Wednesday evening, under the Beaucoup pull-down menu.
Darlings have a great week -It is yours to be!

Congratulations again to Chef Michael Brewer, who was crowned King of Louisiana Seafood today at Louisiana Seafood's cook-off!
According to a Louisiana Seafood spokesperson the winning dish was Brewer's Sheepshead Nachos with Bacon Fat Tartar Sauce and Charred Corn Salsa. Brewer will now represent Louisiana at the Great American Seafood Cook-off on August 8th.

Eighteen-year-old Lireinne Hooten has always been on the lowest rung of the ladder. Abandoned by her mother, Lireinne lives with her stepfather in an old trailer on Million Dollar Road. Every day she walks the long mile, through a canopy of live oaks, to her job at the world's largest alligator farm. Shy and overweight in high school, Lireinne has become lean and resilient from months of hosing out the huge cement barns. And just like Snowball-the enormous, all-white alligator she feeds illicit treats every day-she's hungry to be free.

Lireinne's boss, Con Costello, is powerful, attractive, and used to getting exactly what he desires. Now that he's noticed Lireinne's haunting beauty, he wants her too. But unlike Con's needy second wife, Lizzie, or Emma, his still heartbroken ex, Lireinne isn't interested. Undeterred, Con's growing obsession will upend all their lives-compelling Lizzie to confront the hard truth about her marriage, pushing Emma past her self-imposed isolation and back into the world. And for Lireinne, it will lead to an unexpected chance to redefine herself, far away from her past and from Million Dollar Road.

INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL OF NEW ORLEANS ANNOUNCES COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
GrƩgor Trumel, Consul General of France, Set to Deliver Keynote Address

The International High School of New Orleans (IHSNO) today announced that GrĆ©gor Trumel, New Orleans Consul General of France, will deliver this year’s keynote address for the school’s graduation ceremony. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 27 at 6 p.m. at the Mahalia Jackson Theater located at 1419 Basin Street.

The IHSNO Class of 2015 hail from very culturally diverse backgrounds with students from Mexico, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Haiti, Bulgaria, Japan, Belgium, France and the United States.

Since IHSNO provides a culturally diverse learning environment, GrĆ©gor Trumel is an appropriate and notable keynote speaker. “With the strong French influence that New Orleans has and the International Baccalaureate Program that we offer at IHSNO, Mr. Trumel is a perfect fit to address our graduates,” said Sean Wilson, Head of School at IHSNO.

IHSNO’s Class of 2015 is the third class to graduate since the school opened its doors in 2009. IHSNO nurtures and educates its students in a diverse learning community by offering a variety of world languages, intercultural appreciation and an International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, the only IB program in Orleans Parish.

IHSNO’s graduating seniors have received the opportunity to participate in educational competitions around the country as well as develop global friendships with other students from their international travels. The graduating class participated in a day of service in November where students volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, at an animal shelter and by tutoring New Orleans elementary school students.

Among the accomplishments of this year’s graduating class are: Marcus Renaeu and Michael Kuckyr visited Peru where they worked as volunteers to a Peruvian community in need; both Renaeu and Kuckyr will attend the National Speech and Debate Tournament in May in Fort Lauderdale; several IHSNO graduating seniors have received academic scholarships to universities across the country including Yale University, Howard University, Franklin University, Marshall University and Bard College.

About IHSNO

International High School of New Orleans, an International Baccalaureate World school, a distinction only held by two percent of high schools in America, and the only one of its kind in New Orleans, is a Type-2, public charter school. IHSNO is dedicated to diversity, community, and personal and professional success. At IHSNO students are offered the cutting-edge opportunity to prepare for today’s global economy. The mission at IHSNO is to educate and nurture a diverse learning community through the International Baccalaureate Program, foreign language fluency and intercultural appreciation.

Mitchell, who is the Joseph Tregle Professor of Early American History and the Ethel and Herman L. Midlo Chair in New Orleans Studies at UNO, will explore what is known of Rebecca's private and public life and how she came to represent both slavery and its demise during the Civil War.
