A Toast to New Orleans: Jan 20-26 End of Prospect I, Round Table Luncheon on Jan. 28 and More......

Flight of Fancy at Lakefront Airport

Darlings, I hope you had a peaceful, enjoyable long weekend and paused for a moment to remember the historical legacy of Martin Luther King.

I had a busy week but what else is new? I really enjoyed seeing again the delightful Broadway Across America production of “Mamma Mia!” at the Saenger Theatre.

On Thursday, I attended the Good Apple Gala at The National WWII Museum's Stage Door CanteenLouisiana Appleseed presented awards to outstanding community members who have shown tremendous generosity and commitment to pro bono excellence. The lovely Gala honored as the recipients of the 2015 Good Apples: Gainsburgh, Benjamin, David, Meunier & Warshauer; Jennifer Barriere and Lee Reid, Adams and Reese; Andrew Graeve and Kyle Wallace, Barrasso Usdin Kupperman Freeman & Sarver and Amy Duncan, Louisiana Civil Justice Center.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152491394925870.1073742400.581200869&type=1&l=18a7fce6b4

I had been looking forward to attending the annual New Orleans Opera Ball and I was not disappointed. The New Orleans Opera Association chose the theme “Flights of Fancy” for their major fundraiser and the beautiful Art Deco restored terminal at the Lakefront Airport was the setting for the elegant  sold-out fundraiser.  Beautiful art deco dressed guests danced the evening away with the nostalgic 1920s music performed by the New Leviathan Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra at the Patron Party, followed by the swing era sounds performed by The Yat Pack. It was a very memorable evening in a beautiful setting.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152488409705870.1073742398.581200869&type=1&l=9cf4b4b073

On Sunday, I was invited to attend the The 22nd King Cake Queen Coronation of Gay Mardi Gras: Aubrey Synclaire, Queen of the Opera at Rip Naquin and Marsha Delain’s The Ambush Mansion was delightful and delicious.. The theme was Vienna: Beautiful, Gay and Gemuthlich (Cozy).https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152489481715870.1073742399.581200869&type=1&l=d6f0a88c41

Darlings, I feel like this week coming up, it is the calm before the storm. I do not have a ball to attend but there are a lot of cultural parties that should keep us busy. New Orleans Bride Magazine and the Hyatt Regency New Orleans will host the annual January Bridal Show on Tuesday, January 20, in the Hyatt Regency’s Elite Hall from 6-9 p.m. The premier bridal showcase will feature more than 150 top wedding experts.
Miki Pfeffer, author of a new book, Southern Ladies and Suffragists: Julia Ward Howe and Women's Rights at the 1884 New Orleans World's Fair, will discuss her work at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.
The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public. Reservations are not required. Books will be available for those who would like to purchase them.

It will bring together emerging curators from across the American South and around the world for the opportunity to exchange ideas, develop curatorial projects and explore Prospect.3: Notes for Now More information is available online http://curatorsintl.org/intensive/curatorial-intensive-in-new-orleans.

Christina Vella, PhD,an adjunt professor of history at Tulane University, will discuss the romance and the deadly practice of steamboat racing at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.

The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public.

On Jan. 21 at 6 p.m., artist Andrea Fraser will reprise her performance "Not just a few of us" at Tulane University's Dixon Hall, 6823 St. Charles Ave. The performance is free.
Fraser was a star of the Prospect.3 opening-day activities, when she presented a much-admired one-woman theatrical re-enactment of a 1991 New Orleans City Council meeting when councilwoman Dorothy Mae Taylor did her best to expose and correct the lack of diversity in some of New Orleans' oldest Mardi Gras parading organizations. Read James Gill's 2012 column "Mardi Gras is more open, thanks to Dorothy Mae Taylor."

From Jan. 22-24, the folks at Prospect.3 have arranged for bus service for those wishing to tour the city-spanning set of 58 exhibitions in 18 locations. Buses will depart the Hyatt Regency, 601 Loyola Avenue, at intervals from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. Tickets are $75. On Sunday, January 25, my darling friend, talented baritone, Ivan Griffin will be performing at 5 p.m. at Trinity Church as part of the Trinity Artist Series. He will be with Michael Borowitz, pianist, performing American Songs and Spirituals.

Next week is going to be a very busy one and will include the Round Table Luncheon on Wednesday, January 28 at noon at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. It's Carnival Time at the Royal Sonesta's Round Table Luncheon

Artist and illustrator Andrea Mistretta will share her experience designing Mardi Gras posters for more than three decades. Local author Colleen Mooney will give us a sneak peek into her new book, Rescued by a Kiss, a Mardi Gras-inspired romantic adventure. Finally, editor-in-chief of Renaissance Publishing Errol LaBorde will get us up to speed on the historic aspects of New Orleans Mardi Gras as described in his books Krewe: The Early Carnival from Comus to Zulu and Marched the Day God: A History of the Rex Organization.
We will have seasoned New Orleans performers and monarchs-elect Becky Allen and Marshall Harris of the Krewe of Satyricon to entertain us with an unforgettable show. Of course, Round Table resident pianist Jim Walpole will be tickling the ivories for yet another memorable afternoon of merriment at the Royal Sonesta New Orleans.
Executive Chef Kevin Goodwin and his culinary team have prepared a feast fit for a king. The Will Rogers Follies Kicks Off 2015 at
Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts

Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts will bring back one of audiences' favorite musicals "The Will Rogers Follies" January 18 - 31, 2015.

The Winner of 9 Tony Awards, including the Best Musical, The Will Rogers Follies focuses on the life and career of famed humorist and performer Will Rogers, using as a backdrop the Ziegfeld Follies, which he often headlined. This musical describes every episode in his life in the form of a big, splashy production number. Through rope tricks, showgirls and tap dancing cowboys, the revue contains snippets of Rogers' famous homespun style of wisdom and common sense, and tries to convey the personality of this quintessentially American figure whose most famous quote was, "I never met a man I didn't like."

Anyone who has ever seen or performed in Will Rogers Follies will agree that there has never been a man-or-woman who did not like it. There's no doubt that audience members will be influenced by Will Rogers' infectious outlook of respect and confidence in the goodness of his fellowman. "It's Will-a-mania Time!"

On Jan. 29, 31, local performing ensemble Compleat Stage presents an original multimedia play and performance, “AMERICANA: Different Voices.” The production will be held at the Tigermen Den at 3113 Royal St. Shows start at 8pm and 9:30pm each night. Price of admission is $16.00. Tickets are available at www.compleatstage.org.

“AMERICANA: Different Voices” is an original play developed by Compleat Stage. It is the first episode in a trilogy of “AMERICANA” performances by the ensemble. This first episode focuses on the national experience of race, heritage, privilege and immigration in America.

The production will also feature a musical ensemble, playing music inspired by spirituals, folk tunes, and other classic American styles, interwoven with the dialogue.

Ruby Lou Smith, artistic director of Compleat Stage, said that the ensemble was originally inspired by the cultural history of New Orleans, which led to the examination of American experiences as a whole. “And then of course, there have been countless current events that are calling each of us to really examine what it means to be an "American," and what we stand for,” Smith said.

Paul Giess, a Philadelphia-based trumpet player who will be travelling to New Orleans to participate in the show, was inspired by the idea of “Americanization” over generations. “I wanted to ask the question: What does it mean to be an American?” Giess said. “Then I wanted to hold up a mirror to question whether or not we held up to those ideals as a society and as individuals.”

“AMERICANA: Different Voices” feature Louisiana native saxophonist Reagan Mitchell, and poetry by New Orleans’ own Chuck Perkins.

The second episode, “AMERICANA: Different Trains,” will feature the musical composition “Different Trains” by Steve Reich and discuss the themes of American involvement in international conflict. The third episode will focus on the cultural patchwork of New Orleans and its history.

Audience members who attend the performance of this first episode will have access to a special discount for the second episode, set to premiere in late spring, and the third episode. The Jan. 29 show will offer artists half-price tickets as an “Industry Night” special.

COMPLEAT STAGE is a New Orleans-based, 501(c)3 non-profit professional performing ensemble. Their mission is to have a profound, positive impact on the community by telling daring and inspiring stories through interdisciplinary artistic collaboration and by empowering young people through arts education.
