A Toast to New Orleans and YOU! Week of September 4- 12 - Happy Labor Day- Not to be missed : Round Table Luncheon Saluting 2023-24 Cultural Season on Sept 8

Good afternoon my darling family and friends. Happy Monday, September 4, Labor Day 2023!  "I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed." — Booker T. Washington, "Up from Slavery: An Autobiography"
Have a blessed Day and stay cool and hydrated!

Darlings, I feel so blessed to have been able to spend a month and a half with my family and friends at my ancestral home in Santo Domingo and the beach of Boca Chica. I returned to my beloved New Orleans just in time to paid $250(it was worth)  and was able to attend The annual WWOZ Groove Gala which was outstanding and very memorable. Unfortunately I was exhausted and missed seeing my beloved longtime friend Grammy -award winner Irma Thomas!
Darlings, today is my last day to include you in my almost sold out Round Table Luncheon Saluting the 2023-24 Cultural Season and lot of fun Halloween Round Table Luncheon a la Moulin Rouge  has been moved to Saturday, October 21 at noon at Briquette's. It will be $75 and details about the live entertainment will follow

Congratulations to the winners of the juried 2023 JOAN OF ART show at Ariodante Contemporary Art and Craft Gallery. This year’s phenomenal Joan of Art exhibit featured the following artists: Jane Brewster, Marcela Carlin, Laura Darling Dinapolis, Carol M. Lynch, Claudia Lynch, Jeanne Parker Martin, Kathleen McCord, Karen Miller, Jennifer Ramos, Sarah Redmann, and Kay Richoux. I was fortunate to have joined two of the winners Karen Lynch and Kathi McCord and co-captains Amanda Helm and Antoinette de Alteriis at a delicious dinner at Carmo Restaurant on Julia Street.

Mother Nature blessed the revelers of the colorful 2023 Southern Decadence with picture perfect weather to enjoy it.
OMG! What a spectacular 2023 Southern Decadence Parade. I want to participate next year with the Krewe of Stars.
I adore this parade because of its diversity. It is not just the LGBTQ community that joins the parade, but everyone seems to participate regardless of sex preference, race, age, etc.

Myriad Activities Planned at BK House

A Design Symposium, Wine Tastings, Cole Williams in Concert,
Printmaking Classes & Soirée in the Vieux Carré

On Saturday, September 16, Beautiful Spaces: A Symposium - Exploring the Design Legacy of Nineteenth-Century New Orleans premiers in one of the French Quarter’s most beautiful spaces—the salon at Historic BK House. Participants will visit the past through the images and experiences of designers and curators whose work today is informed by historic interiors and decorative arts. With presentations on historic materials, decoration, and artistic depiction, guests will gain inspiration for designing their own beautiful spaces in this historic city.

The program will feature local interior designers Sweet Dupuy and Eugenie Gibbens who will provide ideas and examples of ways to use historic decoration in contemporary design. Decorative Arts Curator Lydia Blackmore of The Historic New Orleans Collection will share the rich patterns and textures of 19th century New Orleans wallpaper and upholstery shops, while Architectural Conservator and Professor Jane Ashburn will speak on how historic construction methods created the backdrop for these finishes and why modern methods of architectural conservation seek to preserve these ingenious systems. Cybele Gontar, Curator of Visual Arts at the Louisiana State Museum, will give glimpses of past and present beautiful spaces in the Garden District.
New Orleans homes in the 19th century were as fine as any in the county, and those once-fashionable interiors can speak to the present. The Beautiful Spaces Symposium offers an opportunity to be inspired by this legacy of design and to experience a beautiful space. Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite and are $60 for non-members ($50 for members). Breakfast and lunch and reception are included. Hotel Richelieu has generously offered discount parking nearby, subject to availability.

Los Isleños, islanders from Spain's Canary Islands, were recruited to populate Louisiana between 1777 and 1782 to stop British colonial encroachment west of the Mississippi River. These colonists and their descendants fought in the American Revolution under the command of Governor Bernardo de Galvez as well as in the Battle of New Orleans, 1814 - 1815.  Isleños have been community leaders, elected officials, bootleggers, professional men and women, subsistence livers - in short they have been present in every facet of life in Louisiana since the late 18th century.

Join us and listen as William de Marigny Hyland will present "Los Islenos de Luisiana : Last Living Vestige of Spanish Colonial Louisiana”.

Enjoyed this segment by Karen Swensen about Baldwin &Co bookstore in the Marigny at the Today Show:
Baldwin & Co. bookstore in New Orleans is a local favorite thanks to owner DJ Johnson who shares his passion for reading with the community -- and it all started when he changed chapters in his life by leaving his government job behind. NBC’s Karen Swensen shares Johnson’s inspiring story with a sweet surprise from Atria books.
