A Toast to New Orleans January 8-13: WYES' Sanditon Screening / LPO's Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony/ Info about Round Table Luncheon Saluting 2020 Carnival.

Darlings,

Happy Carnival Season 2020!

There is nothing better to welcome the 2020 Carnival Season than to be a "Queen."

And, in that role, I was blessed and honored  to represent Queen Yolande de Aragon in the annual Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc Parade that kicked off the Carnival Season in my beloved French Quarter.

Mother Nature provided a perfect day and night to celebrate and, with my 40-member “entourage,” we did.

January 6 - Kick off of 2020 Carnival Season at Gallier Hall

I felt that God was smiling and sending us the most glorious weather to enjoy Epiphany, Twelfth Night and the beginning of the 2020 Carnival Season.

I started my day by attending the Will Samuels' King Cake Hub at the Mortuary. Will Samuels, and his wife Jennifer created King Cake Hub, an aggregator and reseller of cakes from bakeries across the region. King Cake Hub’s (www.kingcakehub.com) second season begins on Kings’ Day, January 6, in the Mystere Mansion (4800 Canal St.), home to the Mortuary Haunted House at Halloween, with more than 50 varieties of king cake, including some far-out flavors.

I was invited, as in the past, by Mayor La Toya Cantrell and the City of New Orleans to attend the annual Opening Day of 2020 Carnival Season. Members of the Rex and Zulu organizations made the occasion a special one by participating and unveiling the Rex Proclamation and the 2020 Zulu Poster. The memorable ceremony concluded by eating the traditional King Cake.

The Jeanne d'Arc Parade was spectacular. I enjoyed so much having the opportunity to be  Queen Yolande de Aragon in the 2020 Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc Parade.

Queen Yolande played a crucial role influencing events during the struggle between France and England, including financing Joan of Arc's army in 1429 which helped tip the balance in favor of the French.

This upcoming week is going to be a busy one.

January 8th, 2020 - January 11th, 2020
Battle of New Orleans Commemoration in Chalmette Battlefield.
Wednesday, January 8, 2020 to Saturday, January 11, 2020
Experience living history, cannon firing, children's activities, and campfire cooking at the 40 Arpent Observatory. There is no parking at the site during the event, so take advantage of special parking and transportation from nearby MerauArlene Meraux Elementary on Paris Road. Special evening events include battle re-enactments and hands-on demonstrations.
Each year over 150 living history re-enactors come together on the Friday and Saturday closest to the Battle of New Orleans, January 8, to commemorate America's victory over the British in this final major battle of the War of 1812. One of the most amazing things about the Battle of New Orleans is the amount of different people and military groups from different races, social classes, languages, and backgrounds who came together to protect their country and their way of life. This is easily seen throughout the encampments set up during the Commemoration. The majority of the events take place during the day from 9:30am-4:30pm with special events on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday night is a re-enactment of one of the skirmishes leading up to the Battle.

String Quintet of Schubert
Folks in NOLA, I hope you will come hear the magnificent String Quintet of Schubert this Wednesday January 8 in 7:00 at the Marigny Opera House. It is the sole work on the program and I will join my colleagues Benjamin Thacher, Kurt Münstedt, Amelia Irene, and Rachel Hsieh. Not to be missed — it’s simply one of the great pieces of music ever written.

January 9 and 11 in New Orleans; January 10 in Covington
Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony and cellist Pablo Ferrandez on Haydn’s “Concerto in C Major”

The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra presents Aaron Copland’s final work for orchestra, opening the evening’s programs with “Three Latin American Sketches.” Copland himself referred to the tunes, the rhythms, and the temperament of the work as “folksy, while the orchestration is light and snappy.” All three movements enlist traditional Latin melodies, based on the composer’s love for rural Mexican landscapes.

The LPO also welcomes ICMA’s 2016 “Young Artist of the Year,” Pablo Ferrández as the featured soloist on cello. His brilliant career has evolved through collaborations with internationally renowned artists and world leading orchestras. In his performance of “Concerto in C Major” by Haydn, Pablo will bring a compelling technique to this staple of the cello repertoire enhanced by his expert skill and refined expression.

Performances on Thursday, January 9 and 11 at the Orpheum Theater, 129 Roosevelt Way, New Orleans and Friday, January 10 at First Baptist Church of Covington, 16333 LA Highway 1085 in Covington.
