A Toast to New Orleans January 21- 29: Miss Saigon/ Good Apple Gala/Round Table Luncheon Saluting 2020 Carnival Season & More

Darlings Happy Carnival 2020!

I have been celebrating Carnival 2020 since January 6 and this week I had, not one but two, spectacular, fun-loving balls to attend.

Album The Link Stryjewski Foundation charity 2020 Bal MasquéThe Link Stryjewski Foundation charity 2020 Bal Masqué 36 Photos

The Link Stryjewski Foundation charity Bal Masqué kicked off Carnival season in New Orleans with a colorful and spectacular masquerade party featuring live New Orleans Brass Band, Creole Zydeco and Caribbean music. On January 18, James Beard Award-winning Chefs Donald Link and Stephen Stryjewski (Herbsaint, Cochon, Butcher, Pêche, Gianna and La Boulangerie) brought together a host of nationally renowned celebrity chefs and mixologists for an unforgettable evening. I hated to leave to leave the Masque Ball but I was part of the other ball: The Krewe of Stars' Show Ball 4.Album 2020 Krewe of Stars Show Ball Media Circus

Krewe of Stars Show Ball Media Circus - Mardi Gras Ball for all, presented by Co-captains Marshall Harris and Carl Mack on Saturday, January 18 at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center was so much fun. The ball featured Queen Margaret Orr and King Eric Paulsen in a Mardi Gras-based fun variety show produced by a fun Mardi Gras krewe that is open to all.

The ball also featured Past Queen, Chris Owens, with a special tribute to King Mark Davison
who passed last year. Chris was escorted by 2018 King, Al “Carnival Time” Johnson, who also played his famous Mardi Gras song, “Carnival Time.” There were many other wonderful entertainers as well, including the krewe’s Grand Duchess Emeritus Becky Allen (accompanied by piano man Jim Walpole), plus pianist/vocalist Linda Wright, vocalists Louis Dodoussat and Nydja Cojoe, Circus Burlesque performer Angie Z and Circus Side Show performer Vinsantos.

I enjoyed so much being saluting onstage as part of the Media Circus Stars that included Arthur Hardy, Peggy Scott Laborde and Errol Laborde, Dean Shapiro, Frank Stansbury, Tommy Centanni and yours truly. Great Ball was had by all!

Prior to attending these above balls, I also enjoyed attending these fun events:

Cherchez La Femme: New Orleans Women
women who make New Orleans so rich and diverse.

I loved attending the Book Launch and Exhibit of talented photographer Cheryl Gerber's new book “Cherchez La Femme: New Orleans Women” on Thursday, January 16 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. “Cherchez La Femme: New Orleans Women,” as its title implies, is "Look for the Woman" and Cheryl found many beautiful women in my beloved New Orleans. I feel very honored to be included in Chapter 4: “Philanthropists and Socialites.”

Cheryl’s latest book captures the vibrancy and diversity of New Orleans women. Inspired by the 2017 Women’s March in Washington, DC, her book includes over 200 photographs of the city’s most well-known women and the everyday women who make New Orleans so rich and diverse.
In case you missed this wonderful article by talented Susan Larson about my darling longtime friend Cheryl Gerber
I concluded my week by attending lovely soiree at the Residence de France:

Darlings, this week is going to be a very hectic one but what else is new?

I am going to start my social week by attending, on Wednesday, January 22, the Broadway Across America's presentation of “Miss Saigon” at the Saenger Theatre.

I’ve actually seen “Miss Saigon” on one of the largest stages in London. I will never forget the marvelous performance of British actor, Jonathan Pryce, who played the sleazy Eurasian pimp called the Engineer. . When the play was produced on Broadway, since he was white, he was forbidden to play that role.

January 21- 26
Miss Saigon at the Saenger

Miss Saigon is part of the Saenger’s 2019-2020 Hancock Whitney Broadway in New Orleans Series. Experience the acclaimed new production of the legendary musical from the creators of “Les Misérables.” This is the epic story of a young Vietnamese woman named Kim. In a bar run by a notorious character called The Engineer, Kim meets an American G.I. just before the fall of Saigon. …

Screening of “Number One” which features Charlton Heston as a Saints quarterback

On Wednesday, January 22, The Historic New Orleans Collection will show the film “Number One” (1969), from 6-8 p.m.  It is a curious cross between the history of sports and popular culture in the history of the Crescent City. Saints quarterbacks have enjoyed fame since the franchise's earliest days, and Charlton Heston plays a fictional gunslinger who couldn't quit the game in “Number One.” Critically panned, but loved among the Saints faithful, the movie also features Jessica Walter and Bruce Dern and was filmed during real football games at Tulane Stadium.

This program is presented in conjunction with “Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change.” Tickets are still available and may be purchased online or by calling (504) 598-7146. 410 Chartres Street
Admission is $10; $5 for THNOC members; and free for members of THNOC's Caillot Circle, Mahalia, Jackson, Laussat Society, and Bienville Circle members.
