A Toast to New Orleans: Veterans Day/ Moonlight & Miracles/ SPCA's Howling Success‏

Darlings,

On Veterans Day, let’s honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans.  The National WWII Museum honors all veterans with special events. Visitmyveteransday.org to learn more about events or to express your gratitude to our nation's veterans.

Many of you will be enjoying the federal holiday. I will be at work at Casell-Bergen Gallery, 1305 Decatur Street, so if you are in the French Quarter please stop by.

This past week was another of one of those that I wished I had a clone. I started my week by attending, as planned, the 57th Weiss Humanitarian Awards  presented by the New Orleans Council for Community and Justice  at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans. The honorees were Gayle M. Benson, Dickie Brennan, Rabbi Edward Paul Cohn of Temple Sinai, Karen de Salvo MD, Irvin Mayfield Jr. and Ashton Ryan Jr.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?
Margarita Bergen's photo.

That evening prior to the Gala, I stopped by the historic Little Gem Saloon where my darling friend Drs. Nicolas Bazan and Haydee Bazan were holding a small dinner  with the main characters of the opera “Rusalka.” The cast included Rusalka (Melissa Citro), the Prince (A.J. Glueckert) and the witch, Jezibaba (Jill Groves ).
Rusalka, by Antonin Dvorak, will be performed on November 14 & 16 at the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts. It will be sung in Czech with English translations projected above the stage.``
Last night it was so much fun. My darling friend Dr. Nicholas Bazan invited me to an exclusive small dinner at the Little Gem Saloon) with the main characters of the Opera Rusalka. The cast included Rusalka and the Prince Melissa Citro, the Prince ( A.J. Glueckert) the witch,Jezibaba ( Jill Groves ). Rusalka by Dvořák November 14 & 16, 2014 – Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts Hell hath no fury like a mermaid scorned! Would you make a deal with a witch to get the man you love, even if it might mean damnation for you both? Join Dvořák’s Rusalka as she navigates through the fleeting joy and unspeakable pain of unrequited love. From the composer of the wildly popular “New World” Symphony, Rusalka features one of the most sumptuous arias in opera, “Song to the Moon.” This darkly sensual fairy tale is, at the core, a story about the soul and the nature of what it is to be human.

The next day, I was invited to the 2014 Essence of Style Design Symposium and Luncheon at the Audubon Tea Room. The fabulous luncheon welcomed designers and authors Julia Reed and Bunny Williams in a lively discussion entitled, "One Man's Folly: The Exceptional Houses of Furlow Gatewood and the Inspiration Behind."

That evening I felt like Speedy Gonzalez going from one event to another since they were all scheduled for the same time.
I started my night by attending the lovely special presentation by the author of "What Jackie Taught Us" Lessons from the Remarkable Life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis by Tina Santi Flaherty. The presentation took place at the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center and it was moderated by Angela Hill.

Darlings, there were so many wonderful fun- events and so little time, so unfortunately because of the traffic I could not make it on time to stop by some of them but the few that I attended were fun. I started mynight by attending the lovely special presentation by the author of "What Jackie Taught Us" Lessons from the Remarkable Life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis by Tina Santi Flaherty. The presentation took place at the US Freedom Pavilion :The Boeing Center and it was moderated by Angela Hill.
My next stop was on Calhoun Street at the residence of Jack and Donna Flower where the patron party for CADA (The Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse for Greater New Orleans) Carnivale took place . The entertainment was great and well as the delicious cuisine by Chef Greg Sonnier, Executive Chef of Kingfish.
The Memorial Concert honoring Patrick Taylor at St. Louis Cathedral was fantastic. I am so proud of seeing my darling friend, Costa Rica-born Raul Gomez, conducting the LPO as well as the Marine Corp Band. Bravo Maestro!

On the first Friday of the month, I always look forward to attend the monthly luncheon of the Krewe of Cork, and this one, as the others, was deliciously decadent at Muriel's on Jackson Square. I always enjoy seeing my fellow Corkians.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152333289170870.1073742355.581200869&type=1&l=f915bc7c59

That evening I was very frustrated that so many fabulous events were taking place and I hated to
miss the Emeril Lagasse Foundation's Bourbon, Boudin & Beer at Champions Square; the New Orleans Ballet Association's presentation of Stars of the American Ballet at the Mahalia Jackson Theater; Broadway @ NOCCA Presents Cheyenne Jackson (Star Of “Glee” and “30 Rock”) featuring Seth Rudetsky; and “Raise The Roof For Roots” at NOLA Brewing.

Among the many fun events that I attended were NOMA's biggest annual fundraiser, the Odyssey Ball, which was superb. Co-Chaired by Gayle Benson, H. Britton Sanderford Jr, Juli Miller Hart and Margo Dubos, art patrons enjoyed the opening of the mind-blowing exhibition, Photorealism: The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Collection, in addition to delicious cuisine, libations, silent auction and fun entertainment.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152333195725870.1073742353.581200869&type=1&l=1fe422a5ed

Fortunately for me I was whisked away from the Odyssey Ball by limo, thanks to my escort Sammy Steele and VIP Limousines so we could attend briefly the superb French Quarter Citizen Inc,'s 20th Anniversary Gala at the Riverview Room-Jackson Brewery Millhouse. The Gala Honorary Chair was Mary Louise Christovich and the honorees were Dathel and John Georges. The night of dancing by The Twilight Band, the delicious cuisine and old-time friends made it to be a spectacular, memorable evening.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152333245165870.1073742354.581200869&type=1&l=75dd821853

Darlings, my evening odyssey continued and this time was the media night for “The Phantom of the Opera” at the Saenger Theater. I must have seen this play at least six times; in London, New York, and New Orleans but I never get tired of the wonderful songs and I found this production to be very enjoyable and different. DO NOT MISS IT!

After spending Saturday working at Casell-Bergen Gallery, I was very happy to spend my night at home. What a treat!

This week is going to be a very hectic as well. Giving Back and Giving Thanks

At Sonesta, we embrace a “Culture of Caring” and are committed to investing in our community through philanthropy. On Wednesday, November 19th at 12:00 noon, the Round Table Luncheon will serve as a platform for three local non-profit organizations to share their visions for building a better city by supporting those in need.

Through an interactive program that combines a hands-on food service training program with classroom instruction, Liberty’s Kitchen offers a supportive community in which participants can learn employability skills and address the social issues that may impede their path to a successful career.

Else Pederson, Chief Executive Officer for Bridge House/Grace House, will speak about the efforts made by her organization to provide gender specific treatment for those afflicted with the disease of alcoholism and chemical dependency. For the past 57 years, Bridge House/Grace House has served the New Orleans community and has provided a haven for thousands of men and women in need.

25th annual Azúcar Ball is themed La Bamba
Ay! Arriba y arriba! Prepare yourselves….the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s (NOHHF) 25th annual Azúcar Ball is themed La Bamba! Please join us on November 22, 2014 for dancing, dinner, and drinks. We will transform the New Orleans Marriott into a lavish fiesta featuring live Mariachi performances, specialty tequila, and unparalleled entertainment. The 1987 movie La Bamba channels the life of Mexican Ritchie Valens - laborer turned rock n’ roll legend. His story is the untold story of countless Americans who struggle to achieve the American dream.
The NOHHF is a non-profit organization whose main purpose is to provide an organized and directed effort to make the dreams of Hispanic children a reality. We work to cultivate and promote the Hispanic heritage of New Orleans and the Southern Region. This exciting and fun black-tie affair promotes international trade for this region by providing a social setting for the meeting of the Hispanic leadership and the business and social leaders of Louisiana. The funds raised go toward providing scholarships to Hispanic students of our community who have demonstrated, through their academic record, the desire and willingness to excel. Since the work and expense of the NOHHF are assumed by its volunteers, virtually every penny that is contributed (after the costs of the event) goes to scholarships for these outstanding children.
The SILENT AUCTION is an integral part of the Azúcar Ball. This is our most important and rewarding fundraiser event. The NOHHF relies on your support to benefit this very worthy and deserving cause and greatly appreciates your kind generosity for our deserving Hispanic students.
On behalf of NOHHF, we ask that you consider maximizing your efforts in your contribution to the 2014 Azúcar Ball. Your name and/or your business name will be acknowledged in the program and appropriately displayed during the event. If you would like this acknowledgement as part of the 2014 NOHHF Azúcar Ball please complete and return the enclosed Silent Auction donation form. Your donations to the NOHHF are tax deductible.

Garrison Brothers Whiskey Dinner
 Bourbon House
6:00pm
Reserve your seat for this month's NOBS event on November 11th!
We're welcoming the folks behind Garrison Brothers-the first and oldest legal whiskey distillery in Texas. Like everything in the Lone Star State, their dreams were big from the start. They didn't want to make just any bourbon - they wanted to make the best bourbon. Whiskey experts are beginning to take notice. In his 2014 Whisky Bible, Jim Murray -- one of the most respected tasters in the industry - named the Cowboy Bourbon "American Micro Whisky of the Year" and he gave it a 96 score!

Garrison Brothers Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bold, proud and authentic. It's home-grown and handcrafted from the finest ingredients. Plump, organic yellow corn from the Texas Panhandle. Premium organic winter wheat that they grow themselves on the ranch and two-row barley from the Pacific Northwest and Canada. They grind the grain fresh daily and cook their own sweet mash - one batch at a time. Last, they marry the delicious distillate with fresh Hill Country purified rainwater.Join us for a four course dinner, complete with a cocktail and hors d'oeuvre hour. Seats are $65 plus tax and gratuity.

ES FEST 2014

Nov 15 at 11:00am to Nov 16 at 5:00pm
The New Orleans Main Branch Library 219 Loyola Ave New Orleans, LA 70112 NOCAZ is an attempt to make a space for self published artists and thinkers to put their work out in the public sphere and be able to reach other people without the constraints and expense of the commercial publishing industry. Zines are a participatory format and we hope bringing multiple perspectives together under one roof can create dialogue and inspire more people to express themselves through print. We would also like to see more of this D.I.Y. spirit in the world of comics and hopefully make space for sharing knowledge and celebrating work that is existing outside of the tired narratives of mainstream comics and pushing the medium to new limits. And all of this happening at the public library? What a dream!

Your support of Howling Success allows us to continue positively affecting families and their furry, feathered and hoofed loved ones throughout our region. http://www.501auctions.com/howlingsuccess

Fortunately for me I was whisked away from the Odyssey Ball by limo - thanks to my escort Sammy Steele and VIP Limousine so we could attend briefly the superb French Quarter Citizen Inc,'s 20th Anniversary Gala at the Riverview Room -Jackson Brewery Millhouse. The Gala Honorary Chair was Mary Louise Christovich and the honorees were Dathel and John Georges. The night of dancing by The Twilight Band, the delicious cuisine and old-time friends made it to be an spectacular memorable evening.
