A Toast to New Orleans: Odyssey Ball/ Stars of American Ballet/Phantom of the Opera/ Essence of Style Design Symposium

Darlings,

Today is Election Day - Exercise your constitutional right and VOTE!
I  voted  early this morning!. Just think, no more negative political ads and signs all over the lawn and roads! Unless there are run-offs, of course.

Halloween came early for us, as we started celebrating at Casell-Bergen Gallery the day before with the passing by of the spooky Krewe of Boo. Many of my friends and customers stopped by the gallery and enjoyed the visual feast, as well as the libations and culinary delights.

The Krewe of Boo Parade was superb. As you will see in the photos, it was spooky and colorful. The floats and the marching bands were fabulous, as well as the locally produced throws such as voodoo dolls, pralines and others.

Halloween Day's weather was superb so I opted to spend it with my brother Lorenzo Bergen, my beloved Duchess Chiquita Bergen at my darling friend Kevin Michael Kelly's exquisite Houmas House Plantation and Gardens.

As in the past, it was visual feast but this time the vintage classic Roll Royce, Bentley, Ferrari, Mercedes and a few others added a very luxurious attraction. The delicious luncheon prepared by talented Chef Jeremy Langlois was superb and I thoroughly enjoyed my day to the point that I skipped going to parties that night.

My next party was at talented Julie Juneau's glass art exhibit at Safe Haven for the Arts, owned by my darling friend Sammy Steele III. Works by my darling friend, talented artist Mary Soniat were also on display.

I was so busy at Casell Bergen Gallery that I had to skip going to the gathering of women with Hillary Clinton and Sen. Mary Landrieu. I did stop briefly to the National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana's 24th Annual New Orleans Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational Party and Auction, at Harrah’s Theatre. As always it was fun and delicious.

Darlings, the LPO's Pan-American Life Fiesta Sinfonica La Triste Historia sponsored by Pan American Life Insurance Group with dynamic Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto conducting was extraordinary. Dressed all in black with skull's head jewelry, I got into the spirit of the spirit of El Dia de los Muertos – The Day of the Dead – with this multimedia concert experience.

Renowned Mexican composer Juan Trigos, director Ben Young Mason, and executive producer Duncan Copp paired Trigos’ evocative Symphony No. 3 with an artistic and fantastical animated film. It followed the tragic, dream-like tale of two young lovers, set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution, culminating in the celebration of The Day of the Dead. I also loved the three other works that followed: “Sinfonia India” (Symphony #2 ) by Carlos Chaves, Four Dances From “Estancia” by Alberto Ginastera and “Huapango” by Pablo Moncada.

There was a lovely reception during the intermission and after the performance. There was a beautiful Dia de los Muertos Altar at the Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Art. It was created by the Mexican Consulate and was dedicated to the memory of my late, darling friend and someone I greatly admired – the talented Mexican-born Louisiana artist Enrique Alférez (1901–1999), best known as a sculptor in the art deco style.

Darlings, this week is going to be so busy that I am already exhausted just thinking of how am I going to cover all the wonderful events that have been programmed.

Congratulations are in order to the recipients of the 57th Weiss Humanitarian Awards that will be presented by the New Orleans Council for Community and Justice on Wednesday, November 5 at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans. The honorees are Gayle M. Benson, Dickie Brennan, Rabbi Edward Paul Cohn of Temple Sinai, Karen de Salvo MD, Irvin Mayfield Jr. and Ashton Ryan Jr

The Weiss Awards recognize members of the community whose civic and humanitarian contributions to the furtherance of human dignity were outstanding and examples to be followed. The gala evening also serves as the primary fundraiser for the New Orleans Council for Community and Justice.

One event that I am already looking forward to attending  on Thursday, November 6, at 6:30 p.m. the free memorial concert at St. Louis Cathedral in honor of philanthropist and old friend of mine, Patrick F. Taylor. The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by talented Costa Rica-born Raúl Gómez (see all details below).

That night there will be a Special Presentation - "What Jackie Taught Us" from 5-7 p.m. at The U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center at the National WWII Museum.

There is another party as well that night: The Baroness Pontalba’s Bon Vivant Birthday Bash at the French Market Corporation. Address: 1008 N. Peters St., 6-8 p.m. Celebrate the name behind the buildings! The Baroness Pontalba was born November 6 and we think it's high time someone did something about it. Look for shops at the Upper and Lower Pontalba to host.

On Friday, I have been invited to not just one event but four events that include: “Phantom of the Opera” at the Saenger Theatre, the 2014 Essence of Style Design Symposium and Luncheon at the  Audubon Tea Room. Longue Vue House and Gardens is welcoming designers and authors Julia Reed and Bunny Williams in a lively discussion entitled, “One Man's Folly: The Exceptional Houses of Furlow Gatewood and the  Inspiration Behind.”

NOMA's biggest annual fundraiser, the Odyssey Ball, will be held on Friday, November7. Each year the funds raised at Odyssey help ensure NOMA’s ability to present world-class exhibitions, public programs, and educational initiatives. Odyssey also provides an opportunity to celebrate the community of supporters who allow NOMA to thrive now and flourish for generations to come.

Would you believe that, on the same night as all these other great happenings, the New Orleans Ballet Association is welcoming the exquisite “Stars of American Ballet” to the Mahalia Jackson Theater on Friday, November 7 at 8 p.m. The stellar cast of this one-night-only performance will include New York City Ballet’s principal dancer and “Stars’” Artistic Director Daniel Ulbricht and recently retired NYCB principal dancer Wendy Whelan, plus other dancers from NYCB and Houston Ballet. The dance numbers will include pieces originally choreographed by Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine, Christopher Wheelan and others. Read this article by darling friend Dean Shapiro for The Advocate. https://bay172.mail.live.com/mail/ViewOfficePreview.aspx?messageid=mgk4C_Hjdk5BGaE9idZ19Fxg2&folderid=flinbox&attindex=0&cp=-1&attdepth=0&n=52353366

With so many other things going on that night, I am sorry to have to miss what I know is going to be a magnificent performance. I wish NOBA could have scheduled another night of this.
Mark your calendars for November 7, 2014 and head to the New Orleans Morial Convention Center to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1984 World's Fair. At 5:00 p.m., a large bronze plaque celebrating the Exposition will be unveiled at the corner of Julia Street and Convention Center Boulevard, the heart of the fair site.

Thirty years ago today, the Louisiana World Exposition was wrapping up with just days to go before closing. Fondly known as the 1984 World's Fair, it occurred from May 12 through November 11, 1984 and was the catalyst for revitalizing 82 acres of the warehouse district and opening up the Mississippi River to the public.

On November 8, NOMA is presenting a special gallery talk on Photorealism: The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Collection, at 2:30 p.m. It will be led by Louis Meisel, with assistance from six artists represented in the show. Meisel is one of the earliest champions of this art movement, and is credited with coining the term “photorealism.” Participating artists include Tony Brunelli, Tom Blackwell, Don Jacot, Don Eddy, Ben Johnson and Bernardo Torrens.

This event is related to the exhibition Photorealism: The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Collection.

TRINITY ARTIST SERIES presents, on Sunday, November 9 at 5 p.m., a Lionel Ferbos Memorial Concert, featuring the New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra led by Lars Edegran. The concert will honor the memory and the legacy of New Orleans' oldest and most beloved jazz musician, Lionel Ferbos, who died last July at the age of 103.

Darlings, I think I am going to be exhausted after all this, so enjoy your week!
