A Toast to New Orleans: September 16-22‏

Darlings,
Another steamy hot but fabulous week has gone by in my beloved New Orleans.
I had plenty of opportunities to toast and that included the 14th Annual Cancer Crusaders’ Celebration of Life (11 photos)
The delightful Cancer Crusaders’ 14th Annual Celebration of Life Luncheon was held at the Marriott Hotel on Canal Street. The luncheon honored 10 local survivors: Dr. Rebecca Brechtel, Nita Renée Pastor, Cynthia H. Cheri, Charlotte P. Ruiz, Ellen Giovengo Cortello, Lynda Nugent Smith, Peter L. Dale, Jacqueline "Jinx" Vidrine, Ph.D., Leonora S. Egan and Charlotte Fabacher Ward. Cancer Crusaders presented a check for $ 258,000 plus to Tulane University Cancer Research and LSU Health Science Center.
Darlings, a beautiful full moon shined upon the guests at the delicious, entertaining and lovely Save Our Cemeteries, and The National Association for Catering and Events (NACE) for the Savor Our History Soirée at the Audubon Tea Room. Emcees Angela Hill and Dennis Woltering were joined at the extraordinary four-course wine-pairing dinner featuring premier New Orleans chefs, patron party, and silent auction. Save Our Cemeteries is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in New Orleans whose mission is to preserve, protect, and promote the historic cemeteries of New Orleans through restoration, education, and advocacy.
My next fun affair was the 5th Annual Scales and Ales- Party your Fins Off! (31 photos)
The setting, the cuisine and the libations sure made me and the sold out crowd our fins off.
My last soiree was on Sunday, when I sneaked out of Casell-Gallery to attend Opera at the French Market. It was an incredible, refreshing afternoon in an otherwise hot one. Lovely, talented sopranos Kathleen Halm Simmons, Katherine McClain and Elizabeth Evans belted their songs and their hearts out as they were accompanied on the piano by Timothy Todd Simmons. Their repertoire included songs from the upcoming New Orleans Opera Association's Season at the Mahalia Jackson Theater: Georges Bizet's “Carmen” (October 10 & 12); Antonin Dvorak's “Rusalka” (November 14 and 16 ), Gaetano Donizetti's “Lucia di Lammermoor” (March 13 & 15, 2015) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro” (April 10 & 12, 2015).

Please put in your calendar that the next FREE Opera at the French Market will be the next two Sundays, September 21 and 28 at 4 p.m.
OMG, as I am writing this column, I just realized that I forgot completely the celebration of the 204th Anniversary of the Mexican Independence at Gallier Hall. Well darlings, within five minutes I jumped in the car and made it. I missed the delicious Mexican canapés and the mariachi, but I did have a Corona beer to go. Believe or not, I do not have a social secretary and sometimes it’s hard when I am working at the Gallery to remember all my invitations.

Photo: , Yesterday, I have been invited to the celebration of the 204th Anniversary of the Mexican Independence at Gallier Hall and I forgot completely. I was in bed writing my blog when I realized that I was missing it. Speedy Gonzalez that I am, within five minutes, I glamorized myself and jumped in the car and made it. I missed the delicious Mexican canapes and the mariachi, but I did have a Corona beer to go. Believe or not, I do not have a social secretary and sometimes it’s hard when I am working at the Gallery to remember all my invitations. The photo below is of Tari Tron and her husband Ramon Gonzalez Jameson, Consul of Mexico and Claudia de la Pena.
Darlings, this week is going to be another social whirl for me and I cannot wait for Tuesday night when I will be grooving to the sounds of the Fab Four as WYES recreates “A Night New Orleanians Never Forgot and Can't Wait to Relive.”
"Twist ‘N’ Shout" in your favorite '60s era attire during the WYES BEATLES TRIBUTE FEATURING THE FAB FOUR concert on Tuesday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Tad Gormley Stadium.
On Thursday, talented Shammar Allen and the Underdawgs will be performing at Jazz in Armstrong Park.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and Touro and Crescent City Physicians are hosting the second annual beer tasting event to raise prostate cancer awareness on Thursday, September 18 from 5:30 p.m -8 p.m. at NOLA Brewery Company at 3000 Tchoupitoulas Street.
(see more information below)
Friday, it is going a logistic nightmare for me since I would like to be in five places at the same time.
On Friday and Saturday is the La. Women Leaders Business Conference and on Friday is the Reception honoring Hall of Fame Inductees 7– 9 p.m.at the residence of Heidi and James Dugan; 2523 Prytania St.,
That evening is the annual Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's Excelencia Awards Gala Dinner and Auction at the JW Marriott Hotel. It will celebrate the Hispanic Month and the independence of nine Latin American Countries - See the invitation in the calendar below.
“Martini Madness” is taking place at City Park from 8-10 p.m. More than 30 specialty martinis – from the classics to one-of-a-kind creations – are the highlight of this annual fundraiser hosted by Friends of City Park. Guests are also treated to exquisite eats from local restaurants and live entertainment. Proceeds from Martini Madness support capital improvement projects, such as funding a new train, continued restoration of the Popp Fountain area, and purchasing paddleboats for Big Lake. See more at: http://neworleanscitypark.com/events/martini-madness#sthash.595K3don.dpuf.
The Junior Committee of the Women’s Guild continues its largest annual fundraiser for the second year in its new form as a Masquerade! After a very successful previous year, the Masquerade event continues this year with a fabulous Spanish theme. In honor of season-opening opera of “Carmen”, the Junior’s Masquerade event will consist of a costume or cocktail attire event with Spanish-inspired entertainment, food & libations, and atmosphere.
This year’s Masquerade: Running with the Bulls, will take place on Friday, September 19, at the New Orleans Opera Guild Home in the Garden District, from 8 p.m.-midnight. The evening will be graced with live music by the Treblemakers and an electric, Spanish inspired fashion show by NOLA Fashion week. My darling friend, talented Venezuela-born Fashion Designer, Jose Luis Rodriguez, will be featuring his Spanish-themed, cape-inspired collection for a fabulous, private showing at the Guild Home. Jose is making a fabulous red and black lace matador hat for me to wear so I have to make an appearance.
But prior to the Masquerade, I am going to stop by the Historic New Orleans Collection when Concerts in the Courtyard opens its fall concert series with Debbie Davis and the Mesmerizers.
Also on Friday the 19th, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra opens its 2014-2015 concert season with an all-Strauss program, “2014: A Strauss Odyssey,” at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto conducts the 70-member LPO through four pieces by Viennese composer Richard Strauss, including “Also Sprach Zarathustra” (Thus Spoke Zarathustra) which most of you will recognize as the powerful theme song for Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi classic, “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Also on the bill, soprano Susanna Phillips will sing Strauss’ “Last Four Songs.” This promises to be a great evening of classics from one of our nation’s preeminent and most widely respected philharmonic orchestras!
On Saturday, September 20 is the highly anticipated La. Women Leaders Business Conference Hall of Fame Luncheon, benefiting Friends of the Louisiana Center for Women in Government and Business
The Hall of Fame Luncheon will take place during the annual conference, taking place September 19-20, which will feature keynote speakers Hoda Kotb and Nancy Grace among others. The honorees are: Carol Solomon, Simone Bruni Crouere, Sonia Perez, Angela, Hill, Rochelle Dugas and Charmaine Cacciopi.
On Sunday, September 21 the Trinity Artist Series will present, at 5 p.m., "Scenes from the Old World" with Rebekah & Matthew Atkinson, Harp/Violin brother-sister team, joined by guests Georges Ellis Mims organist, Gosia Leska violinist, and Albinas Prizgintas organist, in a program of Italian Classic, French Romantic, Spanish Folklore, Scottish traditional and more.
Before, I end this blog would like to congratulate Maestro Robert Lyall, New Orleans Opera's General and Artistic Director, whose contract was just renewed for an additional three years. Bravo Maestro! Also, congratulations to the newly chosen members of the Opera’s Board of Directors, including Dr. Ranney Mize, the new Board President.
On a sad note, the New Orleans musical community and the world is mourning the loss of Rock & Roll pioneer Cosimo Matassa. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/14/arts/music/cosimo-matassa-whose-studio-birthed-a-rock-n-roll-sound-dies-at-88.html?_r=0.
“Cos,” as he was known, gave the world such musical giants as Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, Lloyd Price, Little Richard and dozens of others who graced his J&M Recording Studio on North Rampart Street from the late 1940s through the 1950s. Many of these great stars, including a number of the studio musicians, have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and Cos himself, was enshrined there several years prior to his passing. He was 88 years old and he lived a full, very eventful life. He will definitely be missed and my condolences go out to his wonderful family, some of whom still run Matassa’s Grocery in the French Quarter.

Darlings please make sure that you put in your calendar that the next Royal Sonesta's Round Table is on Thursday, October 16 at noon at the elegant Fleur de Lis Suite of the Royal Sonesta.
