A Toast to New Orleans: August 4- 11: Red Dress Run, Dirty Linen - Round Table Luncheon and more....

Last week's events are what make New Orleans such an awesome place to live and work. It was indeed a very special week that started with the 14th annual Satchmo SummerFest and included the closing of the festival with its annual Trumpet Tribute, honoring both the festival's namesake, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong and Lionel Ferbos, New Orleans' formerly oldest living jazz musician, who died this past week at the age of 103.

This past Saturday was also the annual artsy White Linen Night in the Warehouse District.

My week started on Wednesday, when I attended a small reception at the Juneau's’ penthouse on top of the Ritz Carlton Hotel to celebrate Jamal Batiste, of the Batiste Musical Family, and his role in the new James Brown movie, “Get On Up,” which premiered here on August 1.

That evening I also had the pleasure of attending the dress rehearsal/preview of “Cabaret” at Tulane Summer Lyric Theater. It was wonderful and I was thrilled to see some of my darling friends in the cast, including Suzaune McKamey as one of the boarding house tenants, Bob Edes  and Marshall Harris as one of the cabaret’s waiters.

On Thursday, I was invited to cover the 14th Annual Satchmo SummerFest Opening Reception and Keynote Conversation at Hotel Monteleone, which I enjoyed tremendously. The Keynote Conversation was “The Making of the New Mosaic Records' Louis Armstrong Boxed Set” with The set's co-producers, Scott Wenzel and Ricky Riccardi.

I also attended the opening parade on Friday and saw a few of the performances. That evening I enjoyed hosting my first “Bean and Rice - Ricely Yours” Fiesta at Casell-Bergen Gallery in honor of the Satchmo SummerFest. I did not need to hire live music because one of the stages was right across from the gallery, so my guests and I enjoyed the cool air-conditioned gallery and the nearby music while we sipped our cool drinks.

On Saturday, since I had to work at the gallery, I sent my assistant Walter Vera, a very talented documentarian to the jazz funeral and I think you are going to love the photos. That night, with my darling Chiquita Linda in tow, we went to the Whitney White Linen Night on Julia Street.
It was lovely to see a sea of white-clad art lovers of all ages visiting the galleries and having as good a time as we did.
Darlings, Get ready for an unforgettable season! -Tickets are now available for the LPO's exciting 2014-2015 season!

From the spellbinding acrobatics of Cirque de Noël to the legendary charm of Randy Newman, next season offers incredible variety at a great price. But don't wait -- the best seats won't last long. Reserve yours today! Visit http://www.lpomusic.com

This upcoming week is going to be another social marathon. This week we are celebrating the Red Dress Run, Dirty Linen Night and the Young Leadership Council’s Awards Gala.

I am looking forward to seeing the legendary Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons that  will play the Saenger Theater on Wednesday, August 6 at 8 p.m. Valli, who came to fame in 1962 as the lead singer of the Four Seasons, is hotter than ever in the 21st century. Thanks to the volcanic success of the Tony-winning musical “Jersey Boys” and now the feature film of the same name, which chronicle the life and times of The Four Seasons, such classic songs as “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Rag Doll,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and others are all the rage all over again. The live stage musical version of “Jersey Boys” packed the house at the Mahalia Jackson Theater in January 2013, as part of the 2012-2013 Broadway In New Orleans season.

On August 8, the New Orleans Museum of Art Presents “Artful Palate,” Free Summer Cooking Series from Ralph Brennan. Chefs of the Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group look forward to demonstrating their own culinary masterpieces at this Café NOMA event, the third annual summer cooking series at NOMA. Friday afternoons are FREE for all guests and patrons to partake in the presentation, and savor samples as each artful dish is created.

In conjunction with NOMA's special exhibition, “Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American Home, 1492-1898,” these talented chefs will share their vision inspired by the theme of the Spanish elite in the New World, as revealed by paintings, sculptures, prints, textiles and decorative art objects.

The Consulate of Mexico in New Orleans is pleased to invite you to the Digital Art exhibition by Roxana Sagastume-“Keynotes of light”  Opening reception on August 8th at 6:00pm.
at the Art Gallery of the Consulate,901 Convention Center Blvd.

Congo Square Preservation Society and Bamboula Productions are pleased to announce the Congo Square Preservation Society Celebration - a two-day musical, drumming and community-wide membership drive. The celebration and membership drive features Bamboula 2000, Zion Trinity-Spirit of the Orishas, Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame featuring Flag Boy Slim, Ben Hunter, Rev. Dwight Webster - Pastor, Christian Unity Baptist Church, Avalanche JA Self Defense and Combat School, N'Kafu Traditional African Dance Company and the Congo Square Drum & Dance Circle. The event on Sunday, will take place at Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park, at the corner of St. Peter and North Rampart streets.

This event also kicks-off Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame Week. Since its formation in 1989, the Congo Square Preservation Society (formerly known as the Congo Square Foundation) has been the major community-based organization leading the preservation of the historic Congo Square.

From August 8–17, Jefferson Performing Arts Society is presenting “The Four Poster” at Teatro Wego at 177 Sala Avenue, Westwego. The two-person show starring Joel Derby and Julie Roundtree recently wrapped up a successful run at the AllWays Theatre in the Faubourg Marigny.

The 13th Annual Dirty Linen Night will take place on Saturday, August 9 in the art galleries and antique and craft shops of the 200 to 1000 blocks of historic Royal Street, as well as galleries on nearby side streets. The hours of this free event are from 6:00 p.m. to roughly around 9:00 p.m. and as many as 40-50 galleries and shops are expected to participate. What began as a spoof of White Linen Night has since evolved into a full-scale, serious art event of its own, showcasing local artists and artisans in the heart of the French Quarter. Many galleries offer special discounts for the evening. Since I have to cover the event- the party at Casell-Bergen Gallery,1305 Decatur will start at 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. so you are all invited to come to early.

This weekend – on Saturday, August 9, to be exact – the Hash House Harriers will present the always colorful and fun Red Dress Run. The “Triple H” is a self-proclaimed "drinking club with a running problem." This annual two-mile run through the French Quarter is a unique and fun New Orleans event that doubles as a fundraiser and it is celebrating its 20thanniversary.

Open to men and women alike, the Red Dress Run has raised over a million dollars for 100 local charities in the past few years. Participants begin assembling, registering, and drinking at 9:00 a.m., and the run is open to anyone over 21 looking for a fun way to raise money for a good cause in the historic French Quarter.

The $70 registration fee includes beer, food, live music, and giveaways. For people signing up on the day of the event, only cash - no credit cards - will be accepted.

On Sunday, the Trinity Artist Series is presenting at 5 p.m.Elizabeth Evans, mezzo-soprano, and darling friend, Timothy Todd Simmons, pianist. Music by Mozart, Rossini, Bizet and Gershwin.
at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Avenue

Noon: "Marius" --

7:30 p.m.: "Chinese Puzzle" (Dir. Cédric Klapisch | Narrative | 2014 | 117 min) The final installment in Cedric Klapisch's trilogy -- begun with L'auberge espagnole and followed by Russian Dolls -- this film rejoins the international cast of characters who met in college and are now in their 40s. Roman Duris plays a father of two who is finishing his new novel. When his ex (Kelly Reilly) decides to take their children to live in Manhattan, he decides to follow them. Meanwhile, as he adjusts to life in the bustling new metropolis, his friends Isabelle (Cécile de France) and Martine (Audrey Tautou) are never far away.

Wednesday, Aug. 6
Noon: "Fanny" --

7:30 p.m.: "Bicycling with Moliere" (Dir. Philippe Le Guay | Narrative | 2013 | 104 min) In this warm, funny, literate comedy, two French actors (Fabrice Luchini and Lambert Wilson) portray two French actors, friends at odds with one another in every possible way, except with regard to their love for performing Molière's The Misanthrope. Set on the glorious île de Ré, located off France's Atlantic coast, the film follows the two as they argue, rehearse scenes, bike along the island's windswept beaches, and consider their options -- as personified by a local porn actress and an attractive Italian divorcée -- as well as the ever-present lure of island real estate. Thursday, Aug. 7

 Noon: "A Summer's Tale" --

5:30 p.m.: "Mood Indigo" --

8 p.m.: "Abuse of Weakness" (Dir. Catherine Breillat | Narrative | 2013 | 105 min) Known for her controversial deconstructions of gender politics played out in the sexual arena, writer/director Catherine Breillat (Fat Girl, The Last Mistress) is one of the most uncompromising filmmakers in France. In this starkly unsentimental autobiographical story, Breillat recounts the real-life events that led to her getting taken for nearly a million dollars by the notorious con man Christophe Rocancourt. Formidable actress Isabelle Huppert (The Piano Teacher, Amour) plays Maude, the Breillat-like filmmaker who has suffered a stroke and finds solace in opportunistic Vilko, played by rapper Kool Shen.
