I was invited to the spend a night in the new cottages, where I spent the most beautiful day and night along with my darling Duchess Chiquita Bergen. Mother Nature provided the most glorious weather for us to enjoy "The Great River Road’s" newest and most elegant bed and breakfast. My room was so elegant with an antique four-poster bed, marble bathroom, a beautiful porch with white rocking chairs and I could feel the gentle breeze from the Mississippi River. What a visual,culinary and relaxing experience.
I loved sitting in the elegant Carriage House and having the most delicious complimentary breakfast which included grillades and grits, French toast with Bananas Foster and egg omelette with crawfish. All the culinary experiences are prepared by award-winning chef Jeremy Langlois. Staying the night in a lovely, luxurious cottage, nestled along an alley of ancient oaks, in the style of and manner of the planter's home of the 1800s was an awesome experience I will always treasure. I thank my darling friend, Kevin Kelly, owner of this exquisite historic plantation that pays homage to the lavish lifestyle of past gone wealthy sugar barons!

That night, I also stopped briefly at the Old U.S. Mint where my darling friend Johnny Angel was performing Helldorado. They sounded and looked good playing country music.
On Sunday, I went to Lakeside Shopping Center and did not miss the 20th Annual Welliver Productions' Wedding Expo. It was a lot of fun and I dropped some non-perishable items at the basket for the Second Harvest Food Bank.
This week is going to be a very exciting one since we are not to just having the highly anticipated popular Satchmo SummerFest, but also CAC's 20th anniversary of Whitney White Linen Night, as well as The Historic New Orleans Collection's seventh annual New Orleans Antiques Forum.
What will make this weekend super special is the fact that this weekend’s Satchmo SummerFest will honor the life and legacy of trumpeter and festival fixture Lionel Ferbos, who died July 19, with special musical and photo tributes, organizers announced on Monday. Mr.
Ferbos performed regularly at the festival, which annually honors the life and musical impact of Louis Armstrong, who was born just 10 years before Mr. Ferbos, who died just two days after celebrating his 103rd birthday on July 17.
The photo tribute will be on both outside stages at the Old U.S. Mint and at the Satchmo Seminars inside the building. In addition, trumpeter Leroy Jones will pay tribute to Mr. Ferbos during his Friday 6:45 p.m. set.
The New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra, of which Mr. Ferbos was a member since 1970, will dedicate their Saturday performance to him by playing some of his favorite songs. That performance is at noon on the Chevron Red Beans and Ricely Yours stage, located near Barracks Street and co-sponsored by Channel 4.
On Sunday, the festival will close with a trumpet tribute to Louis Armstrong and Mr. Ferbos, led by Kermit Ruffins, at 7:30 p.m. also on the Chevron/WWL-TV stage.
Mr. Ferbos, considered the city’s oldest performing jazz musician, last performed at the Satchmo SummerFest in 2013. He had to cancel his 2014 appearance at French Quarter Festival, which is produced by the same organization, due to health issues.
Funeral services for Mr. Ferbos, including a jazz funeral, are scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Charbonnet Labat Funeral Home, 1615 St. Philip Street, will host a wake on Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Aug. 2, with family and music tributes at 9 a.m. and Mass at 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Epiphany Catholic Church, 2022 St. Bernard Ave. Archbishop Gregory Aymond will celebrate the Mass. A traditional jazz funeral will follow.

Critically acclaimed trombonist, composer, conductor and arranger, Wycliffe Gordon, will again perform at Satchmo SummerFest. Gordon, an eight-time recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association “Trombonist of the Year” award and DownBeat Magazine’s “Critics Choice Trombonist” two years running, credits Louis Armstrong as a primary influence on his own life in music.
Yoshio Toyama, the “Satchmo of Japan” will celebrate his love of New Orleans and Armstrong during his festival performance on Saturday, August 2. Kermit Ruffins, in keeping with tradition, will close out the festival by leading a Trumpet Tribute to Louis on Sunday, August 3. Keeping Time: Extraordinary Images from Louisiana's Musical Past
The Louisiana State Museum, along with the Friends of the Cabildo and the Louisiana Museum Foundation, presents the opening of “Keeping Time: Extraordinary Images from Louisiana’s Musical Past.” The opening event takes place at 6 p.m. on July 30h, in association with Satchmo SummerFest, in the Mint's 3rd floor performance hall. Entertainment will be provided by Joe Krown Trio with Walter Wolfman Washington and Russell Batiste, Jr.
The Historic New Orleans Collection's seventh annual New Orleans Antiques Forum is taking place this weekend from July 31 – August 3, at the HNOC, 533 Royal Street, New Orleans. The four-day program includes lively talks and discussions with local and national decorative arts experts and optional activities.
This year's panel of speakers includes Priscilla Lawrence, John H. Lawrence and John T. Magill of The Historic New Orleans Collection. Joining them are Daniel Kurt Ackermann, associate curator at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts; Stephen Harrison, curator of decorative art and design at the Cleveland Museum of Art; Robert Hunter, editor of Ceramics in America; Laurie Ossman, director of museum affairs at the Preservation Society of Newport County; Estill Curtis Pennington, art historian; Ralph Pokluda, president of Chappell Jordan Clock Galleries and contributor to the hit PBS program "Antiques Roadshow"; Margaret Beck Pritchard, senior curator at Colonial Williamsburg; and Merikay Waldvogel, quilt historian and author. Tom Savage, director of museum affairs at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library in Delaware, is returning as the forum's moderator. 11:30 am - Louis Armstrong: Master of Modernism - Duke University music professor Thomas Brothers talks about his new book, Louis Armstrong: Master of Modernism, in this multi-media presentation highlighting a remarkable decade in Louis Armstrong's life. In 1922 Armstrong left New Orleans for Chicago to join the King Oliver band. By the early 30s, he was one of the biggest stars in music. Learn about this transformative period during which Armstrong developed innovations as an instrumentalist and vocalist that continue to exert profound influences.
12:30 pm - New Orleans, Chicago and the African American Take on Jazz, 1925-1929 - Historian Sarah Waits discusses with Fred Kasten her work documenting the cultural reception of jazz - and jazz's effects on society and culture in New Orleans and Chicago in the late 1920s, as observed in print by E. Belfield Spriggins of The Louisiana Weekly and Dave Peyton of The Chicago Defender. Waits' research examines two key questions: How was jazz music and the jazz lifestyle treated by the black community? How did newspapers, as a form of cultural expression and communication connecting African Americans across the nation, play a part in the collective attitude of African Americans regarding The Jazz Age?
1:30 pm - The Storyville Exodus Revisited, or 'Why Louis Didn't Leave in 1917 Like the Movie Said He Did?' - Hogan Jazz Archive Curator Bruce Raeburn explores the romantic mythology surrounding Storyville in jazz origins and dissemination narratives - which remains potent, despite decades of scholarly effort to present a more nuanced and complicated vision of how "The District" factored into New Orleans jazz history. In the film New Orleans (1947), the closing of Storyville prompts an exodus that includes Louis Armstrong's departure for Chicago. Yet Armstrong didn't actually relocate until 1922. Departure dates of other musicians like Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Joe Oliver, Kid Ory, Freddie Keppard, George Baquet, and many more contradict the time-honored assertion that the closing of Storyville forced New Orleans musicians to seek greener pastures elsewhere. Raeburn presents evidence that the end of Storyville was a "non-event" as far as the movements of most New Orleans jazz musicians were concerned.
2:30 pm - Louis Armstrong - Civil Rights Pioneer - Jazz historian and Louis Armstrong Eternity Band leader David Ostwald looks into Pops' record on civil rights. There was a time when Louis Armstrong was regarded as an Uncle Tom, and in some far corners, he still is. Yet Armstrong's stirring example can be held high as an inspiration. His courage and optimism in the face of the loathsome discrimination of his era made him a true civil rights pioneer. In fact, many of Armstrong's black critics, including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Duke Ellington - ultimately came around to seeing Armstrong as a source of true black pride.
3:30 pm - Africa to Armstrong- African roots of Jazz - Musician, educator, and AfricaNola director Jeff Klein presents a panel discussion and musical demonstration highlighting the cultural and musical connections between Africa and jazz, as embodied in Louis Armstrong. Armstrong spent substantial time on the African continent, visiting cities in more than 25 nations over the course of several years. "I feel at home in Africa," he said. "I am a descendant of Africans to the bone, and I love the friendly manner in which people cope with things." The presentation, which features members of AfricaNola and historian and cultural scholar Dr. Ibrahim Seck, will include a discussion of Louis Armstrong in Africa, as well as the roots of jazz in West African music.
4:30 pm - Cinematic Satch: Satchmo the Great Following Jeff Klein's discussion on Louis and Africa, Louis Armstrong House Museum Archivist Ricky Riccardi will screen the ultra-rare Edward R. Murrow theatrical documentary, Satchmo the Great. This film follows Armstrong around the world from Europe to Africa and back home to New York and has never been made available on home video or DVD. This might be your only chance to see it in its entirety....don't miss it!

The Broadway classic that put the term “cabaret” into popular usage and became a descriptor for a distinct musical genre, “Cabaret” is the third and final production of the Tulane Summer Lyric Theatre season.
The story of Sally Bowles, an English singer and café entertainer in Berlin, Germany during the dawn of the Nazi era in the 1930s, “Cabaret” has been delighting audiences since the role was premiered by Jill Haworth on Broadway in 1966 and by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film. Its continued popularity has resulted in numerous revivals on Broadway and around the world.
Written by John Kander and Fred Ebb and based on a story by Christopher Isherwood, the musical score from “Cabaret” has spawned such classic show tunes as the opening number “Wilkommen,” “Two Ladies,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” “Money,” and, of course, the high-kicking title track.

In this New Orleans premiere, written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tracy Letts (“August: Osage County”), lonely cocktail waitress Agnes lives in a seedy motel room, hiding from her violent, ex-con, ex-husband Jerry Goss. One night, her lesbian biker friend R.C. introduces her to Peter, a Gulf War veteran who might be AWOL.
Agnes gets involved with Peter, who grows increasingly paranoid about the war in Iraq, UFOs, the Oklahoma City bombing, cult suicides and then-secret government experiments on soldiers - eventually drawing her into his delusions. The play deals with the issues of love, paranoia, conspiracy theories and Agnes' slow descent into insanity under Peter's influence.

“The Fourposter,” written by Jan De Hartog, stars Joel Derby and Julie Roundtree in this moving chronicle of a husband and wife from their wedding night in 1890 until they leave the house that has been their home, 35 years later. They fret and quarrel, laugh, cry, and make love in the same room in which they began their married life. And standing throughout the evening is the old fourposter, silent witness to all.
Produced in conjunction with the AllWays Theatre, “The Fourposter” enjoyed a successful, favorably reviewed run at the AllWays earlier this summer. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Sunday matinee at 3:00.

“Saints and Sisters: Nuns with Guns in Old New Orleans,” is the new radio-style action/adventure comedy from Ren French, who wrote all of “The Clifton Monroe Chronicles.” Similar to the early 2000s TV show, “Alias,” with Jennifer Garner, this show is “Alias” set in the Ursuline Convent in 1930s New Orleans.
The cast includes Cammie West, Anjela Jo, Donald Edward Lewis, Matt Standley, Veronica Russell and Jake Bartush. Produced by Harold Gervais, sets by Dan Zimmer. Show time is 7:30 p.m.

Singer/performer Anais St. John, “The Brunette Bombshell,” returns to the AllWays Theatre at the start of Southern Decadence Weekend in a tribute to the late “Queen of Disco,” Donna Summer.
During what is expected to be an electrifying performance, St. John will belt out such disco classics as “I Feel Love,” “Last Dance,” “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls,” “Dim All the Lights,” “No More Tears,” “On the Radio” and others. The evening’s selections are also expected to include some of the songs Summer recorded during her post-disco years.
