A Toast to New Orleans: August 13-17: Round Table Luncheon/ Bon Operatit/ Gipsy King and much more...‏

Darlings, another wonderful week in our  beloved New Orleans.

I was just recovering from all the cultural activities of last week when it was time to start again with the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons Concert, the annual Krewe of Cork 's August Luncheon at August Restaurant, the  Red Dress Run, Dirty Linen Night, the Young Leadership Council Role Model Gala  and last night's The 2014-15 Saintsations' Calendar Release Gala at the Royal Sonesta Hotel.(see photos and links at the end of blog.)

I think I am ready to take a little rest on the Emerald Coast, but alas, it not going to be this coming week because I will be hosting on Wednesday, August 13 at noon, the fabulous Royal Sonesta 's Round Table Luncheon and it is going to a very special one.
Our August luncheon will celebrate local authors whose recent works pay homage to New Orleans’ rich cultural heritage. Looking to add some local flair to your summer reading list?
Real estate writer, photographer and licensed New Orleans tour guide Angela Carll will discuss her recent work “Where Writers Wrote in New Orleans.” Then Nathaniel Rich, author of “Odds Against Tomorrow,” will reveal insights into his critically acclaimed novel that explores a near-future world on the brink of natural catastrophe that is so well researched, it hardly feels like fiction. “Odds Against Tomorrow” garnered the 2013 New Orleans Library Society Award for Best Fiction. Michael Mofiftt, a Chicago native who grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and has lived in New Orleans for most of his adult life, is a well known businessman and cultural activist. He is also the author of the new memoir, “Granddad's Dictionary,” which centers on the values which made America exceptional.
Finally, author Laura Roach Dragon will delve into her coming-of-age novel “Hurricane Boy,” which depicts the traumatic events of Hurricane Katrina from an adolescent’s point of view. Guests will enjoy entertainment by the very talented Vatican Lokey. The Royal Sonesta’s Round Table Luncheon is $50 inclusive with advance reservations or $55 at the door. Parking is complimentary in the hotel’s parking garage. For reservations, please contact Noel Scallan at 504-553-2220 or email her at nscallan@sonesta.com.

Daughters of the American Revolution Chapters Preserve Historic U.S. Flag from USS New Orleans, CA-32 for Permanent Display at Tulane University Naval ROTC Headquarters
View USS Constitution Flag.JPG in slide show
Flag flew above USS New Orleans, CA-32 throughout attack on Pearl Harbor where gun crews, without power, manually loaded artillery into the ship's heavy anti-aircraft gun and fired on Japanese attackers

A 21st century Betsy Ross project that links a flag, New Orleans, the Navy, and Pearl Harbor is quietly happening on the Tulane campus.

On the second floor of the Tulane Naval ROTC building at the corner of Freret and McAlister, five Louisiana chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are working in shifts, using needles and thimbles to stitch stars and stripes to a canvas backing. They have come to the aid of the Naval ROTC to help them prepare a very special United States flag for display.

On permanent loan from the National Archives in Washington, DC, it will be framed and placed on display in the direct view of visitors entering the Tulane Naval ROTC headquarters.

The flag could not have flown aboard the USS New Orleans, CA-32 without a patriotic New Orleans native that sponsored the ship's commission. It was Cora S. Jahncke, the daughter of Ernest L. Jahncke, President of the Jahncke Shipbuilding Company. Her father was also a former Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the administration of President Herbert Hoover.

The DAR members began to sew on August 4 and must complete the project by August 18 so that the flag can be mounted, framed, and hung in a place of honor in the NROTC building.  Officers are welcoming current midshipmen, as well as a new group of recruits, when the semester begins on August 23.
The Tulane NROTC has been an institution on the Tulane campus for many years, and the current officers hope the addition of the flag will inspire the newly appointed midshipmen as they begin their training with the Navel ROTC.
Before being decommissioned in February 1947, the USS New Orleans, CA-32 received 17 battle stars. The heavy cruiser was among the most decorated U.S. ships of World War II. Members of her crew were awarded 5 Navy Crosses, 10 Silver Stars, 1 Bronze Star, 1 Air Medal, and 206 Purple Hearts.
District IV DAR chapters working on the project include: Spirit of '76, Vieux Carre, New Orleans, Bayou Lafourche, and Francois deLery.
