Jazz & Heritage Foundation Celebrating NOLA Women in Music with Concert Series

By: Madeline Taliancich

Live music has slowly been returning to the Big Easy over the past few months as COVID restrictions ease. By the fall, the city even has plans for large-scale music events like Jazz Fest to return. But before New Orleans music festivals return to the city, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation has plans to showcase some of New Orleans's musicians on a slightly smaller scale than a fest. The Foundation has just announced that it will be presenting a summer concert series entitled "Chanteuse: Celebrating New Orleans Women in Music," starting May 29 and running through July 3, to present some of NOLA's renowned women musicians.

This concert series will take place every Saturday at 7 p.m. for six weeks this summer, featuring a different artist each time to showcase "the strength, versatility, and artistry of New Orleans performers," according to the Foundation's press release. Performances will take place at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center on 1225 N. Rampart St.

Meschiya Lake & The Little Big Horns will be the first performance of the series on May 29, followed by Caren Green, Cyrille Aimée, Anjelika "Jelly" Joseph, and Maggie Koerner in the coming weekends. The series will be closed out by Tony Award-winning NEA Jazz Master and three-time Grammy award winner Dee Dee Bridgewater on July 3, according to the Foundation's press release.

This summer concert series will be presented as "part of an ongoing effort by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation to address inequities in the music industry," the Foundation's press release said.

Although admission to the event is free, there is limited seating due to an effort to keep concertgoers safe during the continuing pandemic while still being able to enjoy live music. Tickets can be reserved here.
