A Toast to New Orleans Oct. 15-22 : Night Out vs Crime/ Round Table Luncheon /NO Film Festival/Research for the Cure/O What a Night/Spirit of the Vieux Carre

Darling friends,

Before I start sharing the past social events and upcoming ones, I want to express my deepest sympathy and prayers for the victims and their family of the tragic Hard Rock Hotel's partial collapse. As New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell expressed, “Today’s collapse was a tragedy, and our hearts break for the loss of life. Our focus is on continuing to secure the site and to doing everything we can to support the families impacted as rescue efforts continue.” The repercussion has been a nightmare for the area surrounding the area to the point that the Saenger Theatre had to cancel the rest of the tour of "Wicked."

On a happier note, once again our beloved Saints are victorious and this time was against the Jacksonville Jaguars, 13-6 Geaux Saints!

I also want to congratulate all the winners of this past election.

Congratulations to Le Petit Theatre for its recent fabulous 5th ANNUAL CURTAIN CALL BALL. The annual gala, presented by Iberia Bank, raised $185,000: much-needed funds  to support art and education at New Orleans’ famed theatre.

This past week was a very busy one and I enjoyed attending and covering a myriad of soirees and fundraisers that kept me going from one place to another but what else is new!

Among those that I enjoyed attending were:

Album 2019 Magic in the Moonlight (44 photos)

It was a magical, beautiful and fun evening to benefit this cultural asset in our city, enjoyed by all, as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of “Magic in the Moonlight,” presented by the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust, at the New Orleans Botanical Garden.

This much-anticipated event that, unfortunately, because of the threat of rain, was not held under the moonlight but at the lovely Pavilion of Two Sisters of the New Orleans Botanical Garden. It was held on Friday, October 11. “Magic in the Moonlight” is consistently lauded as one of the city’s most beautiful and enjoyable fundraisers. The elegant, delicious dinner was prepared by Chef John Currence of City Grocery in Oxford, Mississippi. Chef Currence was raised in New Orleans and was very much looking forward to returning home to prepare a special meal for our guests.

This annual luncheon with over 100 silent auction items, a parade of over 100 prizes, jewelry and trip raffles, honored 13 cancer survivors. Check the list of honorees.

As my darling friend Beth Arroyo Utterback, GM of WWOZ 90.7 FM New Orleans said, "Oh what a night at the magnificent home of the Goldring family! Fabulous friends, food, live music, cocktails. The Jazz Society Soirée benefits the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Heritage School of Music which reaches more than 300 students weekly with free music lessons taught by New Orleans’ finest musicians."

The Jazz Society Soiree's Cocktail Social and Dinner featured Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ SwingersJames Andrews and Tonya Boyd-Cannon.

I concluded my social  week on Monday by attending a lovely reception and a Vitascope Hall Marker Dedication.

The exquisite Sazerac House was the setting for the reception to commemorate the historic Vitascope, the first movie theater in the United States on Canal Street in 1896. The lovely reception, hosted by Russ and Sandra Herman, also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the New Orleans Film Festival and was followed by the unveiling and placing of the historical marker at Exchange Place.
