Darlings:

Our city is rejoicing that our beloved Saints are on a winning spree! The Saints beat the NY Giants 33-18 in our Superdome. Let's keep praying for a victorious season. Geaux Saints Go!

The month of October is Cancer Awareness Month and, as such, I was invited October 1st to attend two very inspiring events. The first one was  Brennan's Goes Pink for the Susan Komen Foundation.
Komen New Orleans"NOLA Goes PINK"

Pink champagne was flowing at the fabulous NOLA Goes PINK Cocktail Reception & News Conference to kick off the Cancer Awareness Month at Brennan's. Ray and Jessica Brandt Family Foundation were the sponsor of the lovely Komen New Orleans event. Saturday, October 20th is the - Komen New Orleans Race for the Cure, City Park. I will be there.

It was  followed by a delicious dinner at Galatoire's, which also Went Pink for the annual Breast Reconstructive.
Breastoration "Galatoire's Goes Pink"
Breast Center for Restorative Breast Surgery presented its annual Breastoration "Galatoire's Goes Pink" Dinner .
Breastoration l honored  State Senator Troy A. Carter, Sr. and State Representative Julie Stokes as their 2018 Legislative Champions, Dr. Daniel Rupley as their 2018 Physician Advocate and Chontel Carter Frank as their 2018 Survivor Champion
Each year, Breastoration provides education to thousands of women and health care professionals to make sure that every woman is told of her surgical and treatment options at the time of a breast cancer diagnosis. In a prepared statement, they said, “We have been fortunate to collaborate with the most generous of partners to raise as much money as we can to fulfill our mission. For every $5,000 we raise, we help one woman avoid life-long disfigurement and receive a specialized surgery she could not otherwise afford.” Since its inception in 2011, Breastoration has helped 151 women afford 207 reconstructive breast procedures at 24 different surgical institutions in Louisiana.

The 2018 -19 Cultural  Season is  full swing and, as such, I attended a myriad of social/cultural events that included the opening of the New Orleans Opera season with an exquisite production of Puccini's Turandot

New Orleans Opera presentation of Turandot

“Nessun dorma,” the aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot and one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera, sung by Calaf, il principe is still reverberating in mind as I download these photos. It was awesome. I enjoyed especially seeing so many local talented singers such as longtime friends Ivan Griffin (Mandarin) and Tony Bentley (Emperor Altoum) as well as Dennis Jesse (Ping) and Casey Candebat (Pong). Going backstage always made it a very memorable experience. I even got to try on the  Turandot crown.

Prior to the Opera, I attended these fabulous events:

Fall Membership meeting of Women of Fashion
As in the past, it is always a pleasure to attend the Fall Membership meeting of the Women of Fashion. The exquisitely decorated house on Gerri and Murray Valene on Lakeshore Drive was the setting for our meeting that was followed by a delicious luncheon. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155521648145870&type=1&l=8ba22d557f

Hispanic Women Making Art: Creative Empowerment and Identity
Darlings, I always enjoy so much going to the Mexican Cultural Institute and the latest opening was a very special one: Hispanic Women Making Art: Creative Empowerment and Identity -6 Female Artists | 3 Countries-Curated by Marcela Correa, MFA. It presented the talents of
Verónica Bapé, Belinda Flores-Shinshillas, Ana Hernandez, Josephine Sacabo, Laura Velez and Luba Zygarewicz

St Elizabeth’s Guild's Volunteer Activists Awards Luncheon
The annual St. Elizabeth’s Guild's 48th Annual Volunteer Activists Awards Luncheon was held at the Hyatt Regency. I only stayed for the Patron Party which was lovely. Congratulations to the honorees!

The Guild honored eight Community Activists at this year’s luncheon. They were Debbie Albert, Ann Duffy, Ann Heslin, Todd Matherne, Diann M. Sanborn, Carol Short, Alfred (Ted) Stacey IV and Allison Giffin Talley. Carol M. Porter and Mark C. Suprenant were honored as Hall of Fame Activists for their continued support of the community.  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155526670150870&type=1&l=2b8a8bd23a

2018 Downtown New Orleans Awards
Downtown New Orleans Awards at The Jung Hotel & Residences located in Downtown NOLA at 1500 Canal Street was lovely and delicious.

The DDD created the Downtown NOLA Awards as an annual program to recognize exceptional accomplishments of Downtown NOLA property owners, businesses, residents, workers and organizations. The honorees were The Little Gem Saloon for preserving the history of jazz in New Orleans while promoting Downtown as a world-class destination for great food, great music and great people; Stella Jones, owner/operator of the Stella Jones Gallery for, over two decades, playing a pivotal role in highlighting the historical relevance of Black Art. Plus Auction House Market; New Orleans Public Library; InnoGenomics/Dr. Sudhir Sinha; and the Chair’s Award – Blue Bikes Victoria Nola

2018 Storming the Sazerac
Storming the Sazerac is one event that I do not miss but after attending two fabulous luncheons I had to resign to just taking photos while drinking Veuve Clicquot. I could not stay to Storm the Sazerac because I need to take a nap before I attend NOMA's Love in the Garden and Belles and Beaus at Mardi Gras World. The period costumes were exceptional. I am glad I was not judging this event.

18th Annual American Cancer Society Belles and Beaus Ball
The 18th Annual American Cancer Society Belles and Beaus Ball - “A Place Where Hope Can Grow” at Mardi Gras World was beautiful. Everyone looked so elegant at the Patron Party. I could not stay for the Gala but I got to meet all of the honorees. Everyone looked so elegant at the Patron Party. I got to meet all 20 honorees; 20 individuals who have made significant contributions in the fight against cancer were honored at the annual event. The evening’s host was Fox 8 anchor, Lee Zurik. This year’s event was Chaired by Shannon McCloskey Able. (open the link to see list of honorees) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155528295530870&type=1&l=4ee74c0851

2018 NOMA's Love in the Garden
New Orleans Museum's Love in the Garden presented by Hancock Whitney was a little soggy but it didn't stop the honorees and guests from having fun. It actually cleared after the award presentation.

NOMA’s annual fall soiree in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden honored artists John Alexander, Katrina Andry, Luis Cruz Azaceta (unfortunately absent) and L. Kasimu Harris.

Darlings, before I share all the fabulous events that have been scheduled for this week, I want to express my deepest condolence to the family of three pillars of our community who passed away this past week: Dolly-Dean Martinez, Dr. Arthur Silverman and Mrs. Coleman

Lafete News

Once again, I am going to have a social whirl:
    Tuesday-Sunday, Oct. 2-31,
"Danse Macabre: The Nightmare of History"
The Historic New Orleans Collection will resurrect the special Halloween-themed tour of its Louisiana History Galleries Oct. 2-31. "Danse Macabre: The Nightmare of History" will be available Tuesday-Sunday at 11 a.m. inside THNOC's flagship building at 533 Royal St.
In medieval allegory, "la danse macabre," or the dance of death, is a ritualized march to the grave-a sober reminder of life's finality cloaked in wicked mirth. In a similar spirit, THNOC's "Danse Macabre: The Nightmare of History" will lead visitors through darker aspects of New Orleans lore.

Once again, I am going to have a social whirl:

The New Orleans Botanical Garden extends its hours to 8pm every Wednesday during the months of April and October to celebrate "Evenings with Enrique." Throughout the year, each Wednesday is free to Louisiana residents, courtesy of The Helis Foundation.
Located inside New Orleans City Park, the New Orleans Botanical Garden is one of the few remaining examples of public garden design from the Works Progress Administration and showcases the Art Deco influences of three renowned talents of the era: architect Richard Koch, landscape architect William Wiedorn, and Enrique Alférez. In October 2015, the New Orleans Botanical Garden unveiled The Helis Foundation Enrique Alférez Sculpture Garden, an 8,000sq. ft. park featuring 15 sculptures by the famed Mexican-American artist set within sweeping footpaths surrounded by lush tropical flowers and shrubs.
Each week, "Evenings with Enrique" will feature local musicians playing among the collection of 15 sculptures by the famed Mexican-American artist. Visitors to the garden will be able to view the work of Enrique Alférez under enhanced lighting and fire baskets suspended from the branches of the Live Oak tree. Guests are invited to purchase mojitos and Latin food provided by La Cocinita food truck.
