A Toast to New Orleans Sept.11 to Sept. 17: New Orleans Restaurant Week/ Round Table Luncheon/ LPO Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and more

Good morning darlings!
Let's remember that 17 years ago we were all shocked by the tragedy of  9/11. 😪🙏
My last year in NYC was as an Associate with the Bilingual Bureau of the New York State Department of Education. It was located in the 51st floor of Tower #2. I have wonderful memories of celebrating my 32nd Birthday at the fabulous Windows of the World Restaurant and with my luck- it was so cloudy that there was no visibility and I could not see the spectacular view.
I am praying for all the souls that lost their life. May they RIP.

This past week, the loss of not one but six longtime friends made me realize my own mortality and how short life can be. My darling longtime friends were: Dr. Edward Francis Foulks, Ron Keever, Dr. Russell Klein, Leonard Parrish, Carl Walker and Chef Rene Bajeux. All of them were pillars of New Orleans social/cultural life. My deepest condolences to their families.  May their souls RIP.https://www.theadvocate.com/new_orleans/entertainment_life/food_restaurants/article_2abc2f18-b514-11e8-8ede-67c697fd4215.html

On a happy note.
To  all  my darling Jewish friends

This past week, despite going to funeral services, I enjoyed attending a few great, fun-filled events that included

WWOZ Inaugural Groove Gala
Award-winning radio station WWOZ, with dynamo Beth Arroyo Utterback at its helm, held its inaugural Groove Gala at Tableau and Le Petit Theatre. With "fest attire" de rigueur, the sold-out Gala celebrated Louisiana music, complete with traditional and contemporary jazz, blues and gospel. The indoor festival included performances from some of New Orleans’ most famous musicians: Irma Thomas, Dr. Michael White, Amanda Shaw, Tremé Brass Band, Doreen Ketchens, Gregory Agid Trio, Joe Krown and Michael O’Hara. The delicious food and drinks provided by Dickie Brennan’s restaurant made the evening to be a very memorable one. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155480206350870&type=1&l=8a468db75e

September 15-October 15

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
Saturday, September 15

This shared celebration of independence from Spain is the most celebrated holiday in Mexico and Central America. The event will feature regional food and drink plus Latin dance music by Papo y Son Mandao. Again, the restaurant will be open for dinner while the street party unfolds next door. Casa Borrega will offer a special menu September 15th including Chiles en Nogada, the traditional Independence Day dish, and tacos de carnitas.
