A Toast to New Orleans June 19-25 : My Fair Lady at Tulane /FestiGals Weekend/ Royalty Showcase/ Summer Wine Fest / Cajun Festival and More.....

Darlings,
I hope you had a wonderful week and enjoyed celebrating Father's Day with your beloved one. I prayed for my beloved father, Don Lorenzo Bergen, who I remember fondly and miss him dearly.
Darlings, I should be wearing a big sign that I read "I survived June 13-17!"
It was one of the most exciting weeks ever...!
My week started on Wednesday, June 13, when I hosted my annual Round Table Luncheon Saluting Festivals – especially FestiGals. It was awesome.

Due to schedule conflicts, the 2018 Grand Diva, Stephanie Burks, as well as Festigals founder, Diane Lyons, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Councilmember Cyndi Nguyen and Honorable Consul General of France to New Orleans, Vincent Sciama, were unable to attend. But alas, we had Royalty at the Luncheon. Carl Mack and Marshall Harris, co-captains of the Krewe of Stars, announced that the 2019 Krewe of Stars Monarchs will be legendary entertainer Chris Owens and her fiancée, Mark Davison, and they were present.
The luncheon was co-hosted by Sandra Dartus, Partnerships Liaison of FestiGals who spoke about the upcoming 2018 FestiGals Women's Weekend Experience that will take place in New Orleans from June 21-24. Invited guests included Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer and Frank Stansbury, publisher of La Fete News, who spoke about the upcoming Summer Wine Festival, “Fete Du Vin,” hosted by and benefiting the French-American Chamber of Commerce Gulf Coast (June 23 at the Shops at Canal Place).

Tracee Dundas, founder of Fashion Week, coordinated a beautiful fashion show from Prima Donna Uptown featuring summer outfits that were modeled by Sandra Herman, Kathi CallahanTracee Dundas and few other lovely models. Live entertainment was by Dr. Maxim Samarov, Co-Founder/Music Director of the New Orleans Chamber Orchestra and Co-Director, and vocalist/comedian Becky Allen, accompanied on the piano by talented Jim Walpole and Carl Mack on drums. Vocalist Mary Flynn and entertainer Marshall Harris joined the fun as well as Anita Matamoros Oubre.

Visit of King and Queen of Spain to New Orleans

OMG - What an exciting week! It is not every year that we have the King and Queen of Spain visiting my beloved New Orleans. On the occasion the Tricentennial of New Orleans, their majesties, King Felipe VI and his beautiful wife,  Queen Letizia of Spain, honored us with their two-day visit. As a member of the media, I covered at Gallier Hall, the city's official welcome of the Spanish royals which included an address by Gov. John Bel EdwardsMayor LaToya Cantrell and a speech by King Felipe VI. It was followed by a luncheon for the sponsors and VIPs, to  which I was not invited. Security was very rigid.
The private plane carrying the King and Queen landed in New Orleans Thursday (June 14) evening. Their Majesties were welcomed with the tunes "Stars and Stripes Forever"  and "When the Saints Go Marching In" by the lively Pinstripe Brass Band, joined by The Young Men Olympians Jr. Benevolent Association, Inc.

They were greeted on the red carpet by Mayor Cantrell, Gov. John Bel Edwards, Mrs. Donna Edwards, U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain Richard Duke Buchan III, and other notable dignitaries.
Friday's official welcome ceremony took place at Gallier Hall, where dozens of local and Spanish press were in attendance along with roughly 100 invited guests. Mayor Cantrell presented the King and Queen of Spain with a key to the city and unveiled a plaque that will remain at Gallier Hall. During his remarks, King Felipe VI expressed his gratitude in both English and Spanish: "Thank you, Madam Mayor, for your heartfelt welcome to New Orleans. I am sure you are perfectly aware of just how much this visit means to the Queen, and to me. For this very reason, please accept our sincere thanks for presenting us with the key to the city. It is a deeply touching gesture of friendship and hospitality. We also wish you every success in the performance of your new duties."

I think the highlight of my week was getting the opportunity to shake hands with and introduce myself to King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia who used to be a TV reporter when she met the King. This took place at the lovely Tricentennial Cultural Reception at the New Orleans Museum of Art. They were very friendly and gracious! I loved all the ceremonies that Iattended and enjoyed mingling with the monarchs and all my Latin friends.

The Annual American Heart Association's Heart & Soul Gala
The Annual American Heart Association's Heart & Soul Gala at the Hyatt was lovely. I enjoyed seeing so many friends. It was indeed an unforgettable evening, as we came together to celebrate the lifesaving work of the AHA and their fight against America’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers - heart diseases and stroke. The American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization devoted to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Funds raised at the ”Heart & Soul Gala” will help the AHA continue the fight against cardiovascular diseases and defects – the No. 1 killer in the state of Louisiana and in the country. This year alone, the AHA has invested over $2 million into rebuilding research here in New Orleans at such institutions as Louisiana State University, Ochsner and Tulane.

The Urban League of Louisiana's 80 Years Gala
The Urban League of Louisiana celebrated its 80th Anniversary at an elegant and spectacular Gala at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans Celestin Ballroom. The Annual Gala is a signature fundraising event in support of Urban League programs that focus on early childhood education, college and career readiness, workforce and economic development, educational leadership, parent engagement initiatives, policy and advocacy. The Urban League of Louisiana (ULLA) works to enable African-Americans and other communities seeking equity to secure economic self-reliance, parity and civil rights. Headquartered in New Orleans with a satellite office in Baton Rouge, the Urban League’s three Centers of Excellence are focused on the areas of education. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155301648600870.1073743204.581200869&type=1&l=9788b04af5

Authors Bill Dal Cerro and David Anthony Witter will present their book, Bebop, Swing and Bella Musica: Jazz and the Italian American Experience. Italian Americans such as Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, Louie Bellson, Lennie Tristano, Tony Bennett, Buddy DeFranco, Flip Phillips and Joe Lovano, and many others have enriched the jazz genre since its inception in New Orleans though the big band, swing, bebop, and into the modern era. This book features interviews with musicians and illustrates the prejudices and stereotypes which Italians faced in pursuit of the American Dream.

The lecture is free for AICC members and there is a suggested $10 donation for non-members. Their book, Bebop, Swing and Bella Musica: Jazz and the Italian American Experience is available for $22.50. Click the Register button below to reserve a seat!

2018 LOUISIANA CAJUN-ZYDECO FESTIVAL
"This festival contains the greatest collection of Cajun and zydeco artists for any festival in the city and perhaps the state."
-- Charles Laborde, host of "Lache Pas," the weekly Cajun and zydeco show heard on WWOZ-FM
Welcome to the 2018 Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival - the 12th annual edition of New Orleans' only festival that features exclusively Cajun and zydeco music. The festival takes place Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, in Armstrong Park in downtown New Orleans. Admission is free.
Once again, we'll present a stellar lineup that includes many of Louisiana's most beloved Cajun and zydeco performers. Newly-crowned Grammy winners (and CZF regulars) The Lost Bayou Ramblers will headline the festival this year, as will Grammy nominee Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers.
We also have a special focus this year on "trail ride" music, featuring the hot zydeco popular on the bridle paths of southwest Louisiana: Li'l Nathan & the Zydeco Big Timers, Chris Ardoin & NuStep and Corey Ledet & His Zydeco Band, all of them hot on the trail riding circuit, will be among this year's performers.
As always, we'll have great seafood, a large arts market, activities for kids and lots of misting fans to keep everyone cool.
