HAPPY CARNIVAL 2018

Darlings,
I am so grateful to Mother Nature for providing us with the most glorious, sunny weather to enjoy the festivities associated with the first week of Carnival 2018.
During this past week I was able to participate in three parades that were very dear to me.
2018 Krewe of Cork Parade

Darlings, Mother Nature blessed the Krewe of Cork with its most glorious weather as we had lunch at the Court of Two Sisters followed by the annual parade through the French Quarter. I am still in awe about the exquisite, creative costumes that were on display. I just love this krewe whose motto is WE CELEBRATE WINE, FOOD AND FUN! I am proud to have been the first Queen who paraded in costume when I became Queen#2 in 2002.

The perennial King, Patrick van Hoorebeek, was joined by Queen 2018 – Paulette Slone and 2018 Grand Marshal, Andrew Browne; as well as its Royal Court which is composed of the Royal Coordinator Gillian Pierce, Captain Bill Trufant and Lieutenants Frank Piccolo, Greg Pierce, Ronnie Laporte, Walter Zehner, Maurice Rose, Richard Hoener and Walt Navoy. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155005000640870.1073743073.581200869&type=1&l=a005975c88

Mardi Gras Mambo 2018
Darlings, Friday was, for me, a very long but fun day that started at the annual Krewe of Cork and culminated at the first-ever Mardi Gras Mambo Parade that started at 6 p.m. at the Old US Mint. The Cervantes Hispanic American Arts Foundation‎ presented its Mardi Gras Mambo 2018 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Mint The evening included a lovely parade and an delicious soiree where we toasted this year's Royalty: King Tulio Murillo and Queen Triness KuhnCasa Samba entertained and paraded with us.

2018 Mystic Krewe of Barkus Parade

On Sunday it was time to participate in the 2018 Mystic Krewe of Barkus. With its theme “Game of Bones,” it was spectacular! Despite earlier forecasts of rain and possible thunderstorms, sunny, glorious weather and temperatures in the mid 60s greeted the 26th Parade as canine participants and their handlers strolled from Louis Armstrong Park through the French Quarter.

The Krewe of Barkus Royalty included His Majesty XXVI, King Baker Williamson and his 2018 Queen, Luna Settoon. Duchess Chiquita Bergen was royally dressed and participated with her mama, Margarita Bergen, her attendants, Janelle Crescioni with Isabella and her faithful float pusher, Dean Shapiro.

After being a duchess for nine years, a tax-deductible fund will be established so Chiquita Bergen can be the 2019 Queen of Barkus. The Krewe of Barkus provides much-needed funds to animal organizations. All proceeds from Barkus, a non-profit organization founded by Wood Enterprises, benefit animal organizations in New Orleans and the Gulf South area. For more information, visit www.barkus.org or email info@barkus.org.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155010834375870.1073743075.581200869&type=1&l=00d7f0e9b9. Please contribute what you can and help Chiquita celebrate her 10th anniversary in the krewe by becoming Queen next year.

Before I participated in last week's Mardi Gras Festivities, I was invited by my darling friend Gregory Curtis of the Windsor Court, to be his guest at the ultra-elegant BRAVO's Benefactor Dinner.
“Une Affaire d'Avant Garde - En Blanc et Noir” - The New Orleans Ballet Association's Benefactor Dinner at the Windsor Court was awesome. The first Lady of Louisiana, Donna Edwards, was the honorary chair of the delicious and elegant dinner. BRAVO 's 2018 Gala will take place Friday, February 23, at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans. At that time, they will celebrate the New Orleans Tricentennial with three spectacular events in one weekend, including the Gala, plus a performance of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo's “Romeo et Juliette” and post-performance reception with the company on Feb. 24.

The Ballet Resource and Volunteer Organization (BRAVO) is the main fundraising entity of the New Orleans Ballet Association. Comprised of over 200 dedicated members, BRAVO annually produces a much-anticipated gala, and is the recipient of the proceeds from Men & Women of Fashion’s Prix d’Elegance luncheon. I cannot wait.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155002641700870.1073743072.581200869&type=1&l=ff93d97464

The second and final week of the 2018 Carnival Season will be a social tsunami for me since I have been invited to attend a ball and lunch every day.
Among the many events that I have been invited to, I will start my week on Wednesday, February 7 when I will be covering the annual Mayor's Ball at Gallier Hall.
On Thursday is the Hermes Ball, followed on Friday by the Greasing of the Poles at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, followed by a luncheon at Galatoire's. That evening is the annual Kevin Kelly's Masked Ball where we will view the parades as they roll on St. Charles Avenue.
On Saturday, February 10 I will be attending the Krewe of Lafcadio Parade which starts 2 p.m. There will be a Pre-Parade Party from 11:30 am-1:30 pm, at Antoine’s Restaurant in the Japanese Room. On Sunday, hopefully, I will rest and recharge my batteries for a Lundi Gras Luncheon to be followed by the Orpheuscapade at the Convention Center.
On Fat Tuesday, February 13, I look forward to getting in costume and strolling through the French Quarter after watching the Zulu and Rex parades.
My Carnival Season always culminates at the Rex Ball at the Sheraton which, this year, is celebrating Old New Orleans.
Please remember that I will not have my monthly Round Table Luncheon in February but it will on Wednesday, March 7 when we will be celebrating the upcoming spring festivals.

48 Annual - GREASING OF THE POLES
48th Annual Greasing of the Poles
WHEN:Friday, Feb. 9 from 10 - 11 a.m.
WHERE:300 Bourbon Street
WHY:This is an 'only in New Orleans' experience not to be missed.

This year's theme, "Cheers to 300 Years," is inspired by the excitement and unique legacy surrounding the New Orleans Tricentennial, as well as the iconic celebratory global champagne house of Moët & Chandon. Renowned actor, author and tastemaker Bryan Batt will serve as master of ceremonies.

Greasing the landmark hotel's poles will be a cultural cross selection of contestants representing the distinctive character of New Orleans. Cajun fiddle player, singer and actress Amanda Shaw, the New Orleans 'songbird' Robin Barnes, WGNO 'News with a Twist' Anchor Tamica Lee and world-famous chef Nina Compton, will go head to head and pole to pole for the namesake task, each vying for the first-place title based on the judging panel's scores. Contestants will also have the chance to win the coveted "People's Choice" award, based on crowd participation, response and applause.
Guest judges who will crown the winner include WGNO 'News With a Twist' reporter Kenny Lopez, Emmy-nominated WDSU News This Morning anchor Charles Divins, WVUE Fox 8 reporters Rob Krieger and Ryan Naquin, as well as Moët Hennessy USA Senior Director of Marketing Pat Mangan.

Festivities will include appearances by Carnival royalty from the Krewe of Zulu and Krewe of NOMTOC, plus other special guests. Leroy Jones and the Original Hurricane Brass Band will entertain the revelers with performances of Mardi Gras classics during the show, while New Orleans' original all-female marching group The Pussyfooters will deliver one of its signature special routines. The fabulous and fun Merry Antoinettes will join members of the We Heart Veterans non-profit organization for several surprise moments.

Greasing of the Poles is free and open to the public. For prime viewing, spectators should plan to arrive early.
