A Toast to New Orleans: January 9-17: Festival Pianola/ Big Wig Ball/ Galatoire's Table Auction & Round Table Luncheon Saluting Carnival Season and NO Authors

 Happy Carnival Season 2018:
--------------------------------------------
Darlings,

My beloved city was presented with the best gift to start our Carnival Season - The fabulous victory of the Saints against the Carolina Panthers. After a 31-26 win on Sunday, the Saints will face off against the Minnesota Vikings in the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Sunday, January 14 at 3:40 p.m. on Fox. Geaux Saints Go!

And now, as Al Johnson’s great song says, “IT’S CARNIVAL TIME!”.
By the way, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson  will be my special guest along with Grammy Award Irma Thomas at my upcoming Round Table Luncheon on January 17 saluting the 2018 Carnival Season ( details below)

The official 2018 Carnival Season was kicked off on Twelfth Night - January 6 - when Mayor Mitch Landrieu and city officials joined representatives from Carnival organizations to celebrate Kings Day, which marks the official start of the Carnival Season and which culminates on Mardi Gras Day (Fat Tuesday), February 13.

The celebration included presentations from Carnival organizations and a ceremonial cutting of the king cake. The official limited edition posters of Rex and Zulu were unveiled during the celebration. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154944802820870.1073743056.581200869&type=1&l=dfc4b3248b

10th Annual Krewe of Jeanne d'Arc Parade

The annual Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc parade on January 6 in New Orleans in honor of the birthday of Joan of Arc was spectacular. It celebrated 10 years on what would be Joan of Arc’s 606th birthday.

This year's 2018 Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc court, included City Council District C Councilmember-elect Kristin Gisleson Palmer as Queen Yolande of Aragon; Pierre-Loic Denichou as King Charles VII; and Martha Pinney, Maid of Honor, as the Maid of (New) Orléans. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154944203670870.1073743055.581200869&type=1&l=75c07ec3da

On  Epiphany Night, I had two other events that I did not want to miss.
After the parade I rushed over to Carl Mack's Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes and Culture on Conti Street where the amazing Twelfth Night party with the Krewe of Stars was going on.

Chris Owens' Twelfth Night Party

Chris Owens, The Yat Pack and the Krewe of Stars were truly the stars of the colorful, incredibly fun party at the Museum. So many of my wonderful friends and fellow krewe members were there and there was plenty of champagne and king cake to go around. The music by The Yat Pack was great and, of course, legendary entertainer Chris Owens was the star with the centerpiece of the evening being a collection of her exquisite costumes. I loved the way that the talented Carl Mack designed the displays of her costumes, mounted on life-sized, look-alike mannequins, along with memorabilia commemorating Chris’ life and her accomplishments.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154944935085870.1073743057.581200869&type=1&l=d857f9cad7

Leah Chase 's 95th Birthday Celebration
After leaving the Krewe of Stars party I had to rush off to my third event of the evening to pay my respects to another living legend: restaurateur, chef, humanitarian and community benefactor Leah Chase.

Chef Leah and her family are very special to me and I just could not let her 95th birthday go by without stopping at the Hyatt Regency to wish her a happy birthday. She is  so beautiful and I admire her so much. A lot of my friends were there sharing the very special gala which honored her and raised funds for the family’s charitable foundation. The dinner and reception featured a musical and theatrical journey through the joys of Leah’s life, as well as a “roster of recognizable faces and tributes.” A four-course dinner was prepared by some of here friends in the culinary world including chefs Emeril LagasseJohn Folse ,Nina Compton and others.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154944992620870.1073743058.581200869&type=1&l=39db725d54

Tricentennial Mass & Unveiling of sculpture of Pope John Paul II

Darlings, as a member of the New Orleans Tricentennial Committee, I was elated to attend, on Sunday, January 7, the official Tricentennial Mass at St. Louis Cathedral, produced by the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

As the city began the observance of the Tricentennial Year, St. Louis Cathedral hosted the opening Mass at 11 a.m. Immediately after the Mass, The Archdiocese of New Orleans, artist Franco Alessandrini, and the American Italian Renaissance Foundation presented the
St. Pope John Paul II memorial statue to commemorate his papal visit to New Orleans in 1987. The statue is a gift from the Archdiocese to the City of New Orleans for the Tricentennial.

Alessandrini unveiled the sculpture, along with Arcbishop Gregory Aymond and the Honorary Consul of Italy, Frank Maselli, head of the American Italian Cultural Center which was founded by his late father Joseph Maselli. Italian Renaissance Flag Throwers from Alessandrini’s home town of Sansepolcro entertained the huge crowd. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154942961095870.1073743054.581200869&type=1&l=e97c4986b5

Before I immersed myself in all the Carnival Season celebrations, I took advantage of the letup in the frigid weather we had been having and attended several other fun events:

French Quarter Business Association Installation & Award Dinner
The French Quarter Business Association Installation and Awards Dinner at the Royal Sonesta Hotel was awesome and delicious. The FQBA inducted its 2018 Board of Directors and honored  the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis King of France at its annual dinner. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154937122700870.1073743053.581200869&type=1&l=9f5e9f88ff

Another event that I loved attending was Opera on TapDarlings, I had such a delightful time listening to them sing at the Four Points by Sheraton French Quarter Hotel. The ensemble, sponsored by the New Orleans Opera Association, presented an awesome preview of “TABASCO: A Burlesque Opera” that will be presented at Le Petit Theatre under the direction of New Orleans Opera from January 25-28- The cast was so talented and entertaining.

Have you ever asked yourself how the McIlhenny family’s famous, 150 year old Tabasco hot sauce came to be? Well, you won’t get the answer here, but you’ll laugh yourself silly with this delightful comic operetta. For its 75th Anniversary and New Orleans’ Tricentennial, New Orleans Opera celebrates this classically spicy sauce as my darling friend and international conductor, Paul Mauffray, brings his edition of George Whitefield Chadwick’s delightful score to life. Director Josh Shaw will bring in his distinctive artistic vision, formed over a decade of work in opera and musical theatre and the experiences from over 100 stage productions.
