If you are like me you are devastated and heartbroken about the loss our beloved Saints suffered in the last 10 seconds of the divisional playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings. We should be grateful that the Saints put up a great game and a fabulous season and let's wish for them that next year will be better! Geaux Saints Go.
Otherwise, I had a fabulous, hectic week.
I started it by attending, on Wednesday night, the Grand Opening of the Cambria Hotel in the CBD.

The opening of the Cambria Hotel was spectacular. Cambria New Orleans Downtown Warehouse District hotel, located in the city's hip, bohemian arts district, is a beautiful property. I enjoyed seeing Governor John Bel Edwards and many friends. That evening, I was invited by darling friend and editor, Dean Shapiro, to accompany him to the Salon Concert of 2016 New Orleans International Piano Competition Gold Medalist, Xiaohui Yang.

The Musical Arts Society of New Orleans MASNO) presented, last Thursday night, a superb solo piano performance by Xiaohui Yang. The Beauregard-Keyes Historic House and Garden was the setting for the intimate salon concert. The program consisted of Franz Schubert's “Piano Sonata in A-major,” followed by Arnold Schoenberg's “Six Little Piano Pieces” and my favorite, Franz Liszt's “Piano Sonata in B-minor.” Xiaohui was a joy to see - full of emotion and ranging from very gentle to dynamic.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154951700095870.1073743060.581200869&type=1&l=1b57bc3f6c
Big Wig Ball: HAIRajuku
Big Wig Ball: HAIRajuku at the New Orleans Women’s Opera Guild Home was so much fun. I grabbed a Geisha wig that Michael Langford help me tease and we kicked off Carnival Season opera-style at the second annual Big Wig Ball. Chaired by Midori Tajiri-Byrd, the event featured sweet treats, champagne, music, a raffle for coveted prizes, and a wig contest to crown New Orleans’ official “Big Wig 2018.”
This year’s event is themed “HAIRajuku” and takes guests to the fashion district of Tokyo, Japan. Guests were encouraged to don their biggest, most elaborate wigs to kick off Mardi Gras. Rex Organization's Presentation of 1 Million to Schools
Darlings, I had the pleasure of visiting for the first time ever, the colorful Rex Den. It was a visual explosion and lot of beautiful Mardi Gras memories came to my mind.
For the third consecutive year, Pro Bono Publico Foundation awarded $1 million in grants to support Greater New Orleans schools and education. The 63 grants benefit schools serving a total of 34,000 students and include nine chapter managements organizations responsible for 42 schools, 14 individual charter schools and 10 other schools, including several serving children with special needs.

45th CAMAN BALL - Let Them Eat Cake!
Darlings, it was quite a night at the 45th CAMAN BALL - Let Them Eat Cake at the New Orleans Marriott. The Ball of The Military Officers’ Wives’ Club’s Krewe of CAMAN (Coast Guard, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy) was chaired by gorgeous costumed Ball Captain and 2007 Queen Janet Nagelin who did an outstanding job decorating and running the fabulous ball. I was elated when the identity of the dashing masked King CAMAN XLV was revealed. It turned out that it was my darling friend, retired Rear Admiral of the Coast Guard David Callahan. His beautiful wife former Queen 2005 Kathi Callahan was radiant in her beautiful costume. One of highlights of my evening was to be presented and honored as a Dignitary of CAMAN Royalty!
My last soiree for the week was the always fun and bubbly Galatoire's Auction for the right to sit in the tables on Friday before Mardi Gras which is February 9. It was mind boggling to see so many people bidding very high for the tables that will benefit two charities.
AUCTION FOR TABLES FOR FRIDAY BEFORE MARDI GRAS
Darlings, once again the annual auction at Galatoire's for its tables on Friday before Mardi Gras was an incredible fun experience. Each year, the Galatoire Foundation holds Christmas and Mardi Gras table auctions to assist in supporting local non-profit organizations. Started in 2006, the Christmas and Mardi Gras table auctions have raised more than $1.5 million dollars for local charities. Last night, the lively auction raised more than $130,000 to benefit charities: Eden House New orleans, and Breakthrough New Orleans. WOW I could not believe that tables of eight were going for $10,000 or more. I am so delightful that I am being treated to a seat by my darling friend philanthropist Sammy Steele. Join us when Jessica H Schexnayder and Mary H. Manhein present and sign FRAGILE GROUNDS, compiling stories and photographs of endangered cemeteries throughout Louisiana's coastal zone and beyond. These burial places link the fragile land to the frailty of the state's threatened community structures. The book highlights the state's vibrant diversity by showing its unique burial customs and traditions, while it also identifies the urgent need for ongoing documentation of cultural elements at risk.
Cemeteries associated with the culturally rich communities of Louisiana reflect the history and global settlement patterns of the state. Yet many are endangered due to recurring natural and man-made events. Nearly 80 percent of the nation's coastal land loss occurs in Louisiana. Coastal erosion, sinking land, flooding, storm surge, and sea-level rise have led to an inland migration that threatens to unravel the fabric of Louisiana and, by association, hastens the demise of its burial places.
As people are forced inland, migrants abandon, neglect, or often overlook cemeteries as part of the cultural landscape. In terms of erosion, when the land goes, the cemetery goes with it. Cemeteries fall prey to inland and coastal flooding. As cities grow outward, urban sprawl takes over the landscape. Cemeteries lose out to forces such as expansion, eminent domain, and urban neglect. Not only do cemeteries give comfort for the living, but they also serve as a vital link to the past. Once lost, that past cannot be recovered.
Jessica H. Schexnayder, Denham Springs, Louisiana, is a Louisiana native and is passionate about documenting the people, history, and culture of south Louisiana. Her writing and photography have been featured by the Louisiana State Archives, Louisiana Cultural Vistas, Country Roads, Heart of Louisiana, and Inside New Orleans.
Mary H. Manhein, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is author of The Bone Lady: Life as a Forensic Anthropologist; Trail of Bones: More Cases from the Files of a Forensic Anthropologist; Bone Remains: Cold Cases in Forensic Anthropology, and the mystery novel Floating Souls: The Canal Murders. She is retired director of the Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services (FACES) Laboratory at Louisiana State University.

The Round Table Luncheon on Wednesday, January 17,2018 will salute the 2018 Carnival Season and New Orleans authors at noon in the historic ballroom of the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, 717 Orleans Street in the heart of the French Quarter.
Legendary Musicians confirmed to attend include Al “Carnival Time” Johnson, and Grammy-award winner Irma Thomas, King and Queen of the 2018 Krewe of Stars along with Mayor- elect LaToya Cantrell.
Invited authors include architectural artist/historian Jimmy Blanchard and his new book Magnificent Obsessions: New Orleans Buildings and Residences; Radio and TV legend Bob Carr (The Packard Limousine); and Liz Williams, CEO and founder of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum and author of New Orleans, A Food Biography.In addition Wayne Phillips, Curator of Costumes and Textiles for the Louisiana State Museum , will discuss the upcoming Gay Mardi Gras Exhibition a the Museum.
To set the mood for the merriment of Carnival Season 2018, Becky Allen, Marshall Harris, Carl Mack and pianist Jim Walpole will provide the live entertainment. In addition, Mardi Gras Poster Queen Andrea Mistretta 's iconic the Mardi Gras poster series latest edition and the Original painting saluting the New Orleans Tricentennial will be unveiled by a special guest.
Guests will be treated once again to a tasting of Lucky Players King Cake and Fleur de Lis Vodka. Dianne Honoré, founder of the Black Storyville Baby Dolls, will present a lecture on the history and culture of the New Orleans Baby Dolls tradition at THNOC on Wednesday, January 17. Honoré's group continues a masking tradition started in about 1912 in Black Storyville, an unofficial area just outside of the city's infamous, legal red-light district. Her presentation will include on-site examples of Baby Dolls costumes.

Darlings, on Saturday, January 20, I am planning to Join chefs Donald Link and Stephen Stryjewski for an evening celebrating the kickoff of Carnival Season to benefit the youth of New Orleans. Enjoy food and drink from the country's top chefs and mixologists, and entertainment by international and local artists. 7 p.m. at the Sugar Mill.
Bal Masque is really two great events spread over two evenings, the Chef’s Dinner on Friday January 19th and the masked ball on Saturday January 20th.
