A Toast to New Orleans : August 8-14 : Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Forum/ Project Lazarus Ball/Red Dress Run/ Dirty Linen Night and More...

A TOAST TO NEW ORLEANS & YOU!

Darlings,
This past week was filled with so many fun activities that I just wished there was more than one me to do all of them. I couldn't do every fun event that I wanted to do but whatever I did, it was very enjoyable and memorable.
Darlings, For starters I enjoyed so much the fabulous production of Gypsy  - the last in the series of Tulane Summer Lyrics Theatre. .
Accompanied by my darling old-time friends from Newton, Mass., Harold Weaver PhD and Anne Nash, PhD, we started our evening at the lovely Pre-party Reception at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Mint. The new exhibition, “Women of Note,” highlights the role of women in the evolution of New Orleans Jazz from its beginnings in the early 20th century to today's vibrant music scene.
Dr. Anne Nash, Dr. Harold Weaver and Kathleen Turner, Director of the French Market Corporation
Immediately after that we walked to the historic Omni Royal Orleans Hotel where The Satchmo SummerFest Kickoff Party took place. It was a very special evening with vocalist Germaine Bazzle and a special appearance by international jazz star Dee Dee Bridgewater. In case you did not know, Dee Dee has won two Grammy Awards and a Tony for her work in jazz vocals and musical theater, respectively and she now lives in the Big Easy.
During the evening,  beautiful jazzy awards were presented to the “Celebrate our Spirit of Satchmo” winners James Andrews, Germaine Bazzle, and David Kunian. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154558367520870.1073742900.581200869&type=1&l=605acd85bf
The Historic New Orleans Collection's annual 2017 New Orleans Antiques Forum, "In Their Hands: Creative Masters of Southern Decorative Arts," is taking place this weekend. Experienced and novice antiques collectors gain valuable advice from experts across a range of specialties at this annual event.
The Forum examines the artistry and influence of those individuals whose hands crafted the decorative arts so cherished in the South. Now in its tenth year, this four-day program is nationally regarded as one of the premier events for antiques collectors and enthusiasts.
I was invited to attend the lovely reception at The HNOC, 533 Royal Street and I enjoyed it tremendouslyhttps://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154560346375870.1073742901.581200869&type=1&l=5336745530
One of the soirees that I did not get to attend on August 5 was the crowning of the winners of the 14th annual Great American Seafood Cook-Off, a cooking competition in New Orleans that pits 12 U.S. chefs against one another in a timed, live cooking show. The winner was Alaskan Chef Lionel Uddipa. Congratulations to the newly crowned 2017 King of American Seafood!

The 2017 White Linen Night event in the Warehouse Arts District was a wet one but it didn't stop art lovers from having fun. The rain stopped for a few hours so that we could enjoy strolling and stopping to see the art exhibits. I loved it and I was fortunate to see so many friends and introduce my darling friend, Dr. Tom Albert, who is running for Mayor of New Orleans to my friends.

On Sunday, I enjoyed very much attending the annual Satchmo SummerFest Jazz Mass and Second-Line Parade. We celebrated the Mass in the historic Treme neighborhood at St. Augustine Catholic Church of New Orleans. Following mass, there was a lovely “Satchmo Salute” Second-Line Parade. A New Orleans cultural tradition, this very special second-line proceeded to Satchmo SummerFest at the Old U.S. Mint.

Darlings, I am so excited that most of my invited guests to the annual Round Table Luncheon Saluting the Cultural Arts has responded that they are coming.
The Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, September 13 at noon at the historical ballroom of the Bourbon Orleans Hotel.
The luncheon will be co-hosted by Scott Hutcheson, Senior Adviser to the Mayor for Cultural Economy and Society columnist and blogger Margarita Bergen.

Darlings, before I share with you all the exciting upcoming events I want you to check out the listing of my condo at 811 Marigny Street, Unit C
It is listed for about $100,000 less than its appraised value. I LOVE my place but I am tired of paying mortgage and the Condo Association is not yet approved for a reverse mortgage.https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/Marigny-New-Orleans-LA/pmf,pf_pt/73790110_zpid/269714_rid/globalrelevanceex_sort/29.976721,-90.036157,29.95274,-90.074609_rect/14_zm/

This upcoming week is going to be full of fun activities.

One of the soirees that I am not going to miss attending on Friday is the U.S. Coast Guard Eighth District Change of Command Ceremony where my darling friend, Rear Admiral David R. Callahan, will be relieved by Rear Admiral Paul F. Thomas. This event is by invitation only and I cannot wait since I love men in uniform and there will be plenty of them!.

On Saturday there so many events including the Red Dress Run.

Get ready to see hundreds of red dresses flying through the streets of New Orleans. This year’s 23rd Annual Red Dress Run will be held on Saturday, August 12. The run typically takes off at 12:30 p.m., but participants may begin gathering as early as 9 a.m. in Crescent Park. Registered runners can expect unlimited beer, food and live music. From there, the run will commence as red dresses of all kinds parade along Esplanade Avenue, into the French Quarter briefly, and then back to Crescent Park.

Every year the “Hash House Harriers,” a self-proclaimed “drinking club with a running problem,” hosts the Red Dress Run throughout the French Quarter. This unique event is open to men and women alike, and it doubles as a fundraiser for over 100 local charities.
Dirty Linen NightAugust 12, 2017
Just one week after White Linen Night, Dirty Linen Night takes place to promote the art galleries and antique shops along Royal Street.
On the second Saturday of August, six blocks of Royal Street and some adjoining cross streets will be blocked off to allow art lovers to freely browse the many participating galleries and shops for Dirty Linen Night. The event lasts up to five hours, and is FREE and open to the public.
Dirty Linen Night allows art-lovers to explore Royal Street, as well as neighboring streets like Dutch Alley and Jackson Square. Shops around the French Quarter will offer special deals and entertainment throughout the evening. Sip on a dirty martini, enjoy some dirty rice, listen to your favorite local band, and check out the laundry baskets posted cleverly outside each gallery.
The official event begins at 7 p.m. between the 200-1000 blocks of Royal Street and lasts for about five hours.
On Saturday, I am looking forward to attending, with my brother Lorenzo Bergen, the celebration at the New Orleans Museum of Art honoring Tom Benson upon the occasion of his 90th birthday.

Darlings, enjoy your week and save some energy for the next one.

Laura Simon Nelson, a Baton Rouge native, has enjoyed a lifelong interest in art. After years of collecting, her enthusiasm grew into an intense desire to see the artworks cared for properly and made accessible to the public for viewing and further study. This dream began to materialize in 1996 with her gift of 307 works to THNOC, a number she expanded to 525 in subsequent years.

A selection of more than 80 of these pieces, including this painting, sculpture, and Newcomb pottery is on view in A Most Significant Gift: The Laura Simon Nelson Collection, at 400 Chartres Street.

While visiting Carl Woodward, Nelson viewed this painting, Man Sharpening Axe, a watercolor painting by his uncle, Ellsworth Woodward. Upon hearing Nelson's appreciation of the Woodward painting, Carl led Nelson to his attic, full of artwork by both William and Ellsworth Woodward, and exclaimed "I've been waiting for you all my life."
