A Spirited Toast to you and N.O. : Lion King/Joan of Arc Parade/ The Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes and Culture‏ and more

Darlings, I have scheduled the next Round Table Luncheon for Wednesday, January 18  at noon at the Bourbon Orleans!

Darling friends, Wishing all of you, the happiest, peaceful, healthy and prosperous 2017- Feliz Ano Nuevo 2017.
As you know, Mother Nature did not cooperate on New Year's Eve. I got dressed, took my bottle of Veuve Clicquot, opened the door and the rain was too hard for me to be outdoor on top of Jax Brewery. so I ended up hugging Chiquita, eating my 12 grapes and spending a very restful night at home!

Duchess Chiquita and I were invited by our darling friend Bonnie Broel and her beautiful puppy Amy to have the traditional black eyes peas, corned beef and cabbage that bring you luck in 2017. The buffet also included many other dishes as well as Bonnie's famous Salmon. Of course, we accepted the invitation and the food, the company and the libations were exquisite. Happy 2017 Bonnie Broel!Happy 2017 Bonnie Broel!

Prior to the New Year's Eve, I was invited by darling friend, Carl Mack, to his new Mardi Gras Costume Museum which will be open this Friday, January 6. He hosted a surprise party for one of my darling friends, talented photographer Steven Forster, of The Advocate. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153962481215870.1073742765.581200869&type=1&l=178b0f851a

As for the Mardi Gras Costume Museum, the opening is for 7:00 p.m. Friday and the location is 1010 Conti Street in the French Quarter. I can’t wait to see it!
I had such a great time on at Superior Grill. My darling friend, Sue Vaccaro, Tony Award-winning Broadway producer who currently splits her time between New Orleans, New York City and London, invited me to join her for luncheon and dinner to honor the visit of talented Michael Longoria, who played Frankie Valli in the original production of Jersey Boys on Broadway. We were joined by many friends including   Wynonia LazaroWilliam LazaroSue VaccaroMichael LongoriaBelinda Cambre ConstantRicky Stevens , Judy J. Sullivan and Executive Chef Miguel Chavez who is participating in the upcoming Seven Deadly Sins on January 6.

On Thursday, January 5, I have been invited to attend the Media Night for The Lion King, winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This landmark event brings together one of the most imaginative creative teams on Broadway. It will be playing at the Saenger until January 29, 2017. Not to be missed. I loved it!

Always a fun time with plenty of live music from some of the top musicians in New Orleans and plenty of food. Those who can do so are asked to bring a dish.
Darlings, some great classical music is also coming our way this week. The following night she will be at the Orpheum again, this time with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra as the featured soloist on Mozart’s famous Piano Concerto No. 21 in C-major. And, for those of you on the Northshore, she will repeat the performance at the First Baptist Church in Covington on Friday night.

They will be performing works of Mozart, Beethoven and Prokofiev.

On January 6, 2017, there are more soirees than I can possibly attend.

There is the New Orleans Opera Association’s inaugural Big Wig Ball! Hosted by the Junior Committee of the Women's Guild. Revelers will dine on locally-inspired cuisine, taste an assortment of King Cakes, and drink and dance the night away. Attendees are encouraged to wear their biggest and most creative wig for a chance to be crowned New Orleans' official "Big Wig 2017!"

This first-time event will take place at the New Orleans Women’s Opera Guild Home at 2504 Prytania Street, from 8-11 p.m. Cocktail/costume attire. Wig required. For more information go to http://neworleansopera.org/event/big-wig-ball/.

Then, that same night (Jan. 6) there is also the 9th Annual Joan of Arc walking parade through the French Quarter, honoring the Patron Saint of France and New Orleans on her birthday. Coincidentally, it is also Twelfth Night, which marks the beginning of the Carnival Season leading up to Mardi Gras Day on February 28 this year. Here are the details:

9TH ANNUAL JOAN OF ARC PARADE WALKS ON JOAN OF ARC'S BIRTHDAY FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 2017 AT 7:00 P.M.

The Joan of Arc Parade continues its tradition of medieval revelry and reverence, local artistry and walking historical theater in honor of Joan of Arc's 605th birthday January 6, 2017. Joan of Arc's birthday coincides with Twelfth Night, making this French Quarter procession a unique New Orleans celebration of Mardi Gras mixed with homegrown medieval pageantry.

The parade begins at 7:00 p.m. at the corner of Toulouse and Decatur Streets and ends at approximately 8:45 p.m. across from Jackson Square at Washington Artillery Park, the riverside amphitheater next to Café du Monde.

Ceremonial Stopping Points along the Route:
A toast from the Consul General of France, Grégor Trumel, will occur at 7:15 from the Williams Research Center/Historic New Orleans Collection balcony at 401 Chartres (corner of Conti).  Here the Consul General toasts the 2017 Royalty: Queen Yolande of Aragon (Camille Whitworth); Charles VII (Jean-Luc Albin) and Joan of Arc, Maid of Honor (Héloïse Trumel) as the parade pauses for its first official ceremony.

Following the toast, the parade proceeds to the midway point for what has become the most viewed moment of the evening: the blessing of Joan of Arc's sword in front of St. Louis Cathedral.  The Very Reverend Father Philip Landry will bless the 2017 Maid's sword, which will then be presented by the 2016 Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc Maid of Honor Margeaux Schexnider to the 2017 Maid of Honor Héloïse Trumel on horseback.

The procession continues from Jackson Square down Chartres, to pause in front of Angeline Restaurant at 1032 Chartres, where a real birthday cake will be presented to young Joan in the Domrémy village section of the parade.  Martha Pinney, 14, portrays Joan the Sheperdess in this section that represents Joan's young years and her first experience hearing her Voices.  The parade will pause as Abigail (10) and Anna Frances (6) Harrell, daughters of Angeline Restaurant owners Alex and Cory Harrelll present young Joan with a real birthday cake; Joan will make a wish for the New Year and parade members and onlookers will sing happy birthday together.

Shortly after this moment, the parade turns right onto Ursulines to walk alongside the Ursulines Convent wall to Decatur Street, where the parade turns right to pass the golden Joan of Arc statue at New Place de France at St. Phillip and Decatur Streets.

A few blocks down, the parade moves to the riverside to end at Washington Artillery Park, with the annual parade culmination of a dual purpose King Cake Ceremony: a presentation of a special golden birthday king cake created by La Louisiane Bakery given to Joan by her King, Charles VII (Jean Luc Albin).

The king cake ceremony ends at approximately 9:00 p.m. and the parade disbands here at Washington Artillery Park, across from Jackson Square.

And, also in keeping with the New Orleans Twelfth Night tradition, the Phunny Phorty Phellows will take their annual streetcar ride along the St. Charles Avenue Line from Uptown to Downtown New Orleans, throwing beads and other trinkets from the windows to spectators. This is the “official” kickoff to the Carnival Season in New Orleans and from January 6 to Mardi Gras Day the city will mark the season with parades, Carnival balls and other related events, including King Cake parties.

It’s the most fun time of the year in New Orleans and I am eagerly looking forward to it, especially the Krewe of Barkus dog parade, which will be on Sunday, February 19 at 2:00 p.m. I have been in every one of their parades since the beginning, first with my late min-pin, Duke Tito and now with my chihuahua, Duchess Chiquita and this year theme is Pirates of the Crescent City.

I’ll have more details on this and other Mardi Gras happenings as they get closer. Wishing all of you a Happy New Year in 2017 and a fun-filled Carnival Season!Duchess Chiquita and I were invited by our darling friend Bonnie Broel and her beautiful puppy Amy to have the traditional black eyes peas, corned beef and cabbage that bring you luck in 2017. The buffet also included many other dishes as well as Bonnie's famous Salmon. Of course, we accepted the invitation and the food, the company and the libations were exquisite. Happy 2017 Bonnie Broel!

Darlings, enjoy the new digital issue of New Orleans Living magazine. Lots of interesting and informative articles You are probably in one of the photos in the Scene, in page 8 and pages 59-60, 61 and 63.

Darlings, I have scheduled tentatively the next Round Table Luncheon for Wednesday, January 18 and Wednesday, February 15. at noon at the Bourbon Orleans!
