A Toast to N.O.: Round Table Luncheon Saluting Tales/ Tales of the Cocktail Festivities.....‏

Good morning darlings, are we ready for a very spirited week? I am - I can not wait for the annual Round Table Luncheon Saluting Tales of the Cocktail on Wednesday, July 20 at noon at Hotel Mazarin and then the long anticipated Tales of the Cocktail July 19-24

Darlings,
Despite the tragedy in Nice, France that marred the French National Holiday, Bastille Day festivities went on in New Orleans as originally planned.
French Consul General, Monsieur Gregory Trumel thought about cancelling the celebration, but he felt that they must go forward because the terrorists must NOT win. With the motto of “liberté, égalité, fraternité”, he asked for us to pause for a few minutes to honor the dead and proceeded to sing “La Marseillaise,” the French National Anthem. Here it is on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153528258160870.1073742687.581200869&type=1&l=e522739d53.
One of my darling friends, the former Vice-Consul of France in New Orleans, Martine Vasseur, was only a few feet away and sent an e-mail on Facebook. “I am still shell-shocked after the terrorist attack in Nice which caught my girlfriend and I by surprise while attending a jazz concert a mere 25 km away. Today we are in mourning instead of dancing to the sounds of Earth Wind and Fire as initially planned. My sympathy goes to the victims, to their families, to the many onlookers, especially to the foreign tourists who were watching the fireworks on the famous Promenade des Anglais. I am short of words to describe our immense grief.”
I was really saddened, since I love the city of Nice and cherish my lovely memories of the beautiful Promenade des Anglais and my stays at both the famous Negresco Hotel and the Meridian Hotel. My sympathy and prayers go out to all the victims and their families and wishing a speedy recovery to the other victims.
The same goes to the Baton Rouge victims and their families. I am praying for peace and unity at this difficult time.
The festivities, “Vive le 14 juillet” – “Long live the 14th of July,” “Vive la France! Vive la République!” were very memorable. The VIP Soiree hosted by the Consul General Trumel in honor of Bastille Day at the New Orleans Museum of Art was superb.
Duchess Chiquita Bergen joined me to watch the always fun French Market 2016 Bartenders and Waiters Race. Part of Bastille Day Fete Nola festivities, in partnership with the French community, this race takes the traditionally practiced WAITERS RACE held round the world in honor of Bastille Day, to a new level by bringing in local bartenders, too! The race happens in or near the French Market each year. This year's 2016 race occurred on French Market Place, between Barracks and Ursulines streets. I am happy to report that the first place was won by a female waitress from Muriel's #20. Mary Hulse won the first heat as Garry Marrero and Jewel Wooten came in behind her. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153533816080870.1073742689.581200869&type=1&l=b1874d5ef1
In between Bastille Day festivities, I was invited to attend the lovely Susan G Komen's The Summer Cure Patron Party at the palatial home of Joseph and Sue Ellen Canizaro. The 15th Summer Cure Chef's Wine Dinner took place on Friday, July 15 at the Windsor Court. Susan G. Komen New Orleans is dedicated to combating breast cancer at every front. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153525981040870.1073742686.581200869&type=1&l=6ea838a7e6
I didn't think I was able to attend the Gala, since I was planning to participate with Duchess Chiquita Linda in the annual French Dog Contest but, due to the weather, all outdoor activities for the Bastille Day Celebration at NOMA were cancelled so I was delighted to be able to attend the Summer Cure Chefs Wine Dinner benefiting Susan G. Komen New Orleans which was spectacular. The elegant Windsor Court was the venue for the delicious dinner that featured a spectacular lineup of chefs: Alex Harrell, Angeline; Eric Sibley, Doris Metropolitan; Kristen Essig and Michael Stoltzfus, Coquette; Nick Lama, Restaurant Avo; and Chef de Cuisine Gabriel Charpentier, The Grill Room, Windsor Court Hotel. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153530719860870.1073742688.581200869&type=1&l=293697d267
Another event that I thoroughly enjoyed was attending the fabulous performance of “The High Priestess of Dark Alley” at Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre. The cast was superb and the play was very entertaining, funny and I found myself relating to some of it because I came from a matriarchl family where the women wore the pants. I recommend it very highly. It will be playing until July 24.
Darlings, this past week four of my old-time friends passed away and I want to express my deepest condolence to the family of old-time restaurateurs Jack Sands of Tavern on the Park- now Ralph on the Park: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/theneworleansadvocate/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=180624380
and longtime friend and fellow Rotarian Peter Mayer of Peter Mayer Advertising: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/theneworleansadvocate/obituary.aspx?n=peter-arno-mayer&pid=180685144&fhid=5630
May their Soul Rest in Peace!
On a happy, happy note, - FestiGals today announced that the legendary Angela Hill, TV and radio broadcaster, will serve as the 2016 Grand Diva for the New Orleans festival that celebrates, empowers and connects women. In her role as FestiGals Grand Diva, Angela Hill will be crowned on Thursday, July 28, and she will lead the parade of partygoers on Saturday, July 30, during the sixth annual Stiletto Stroll through the streets of the Warehouse District.
FestiGals, which is slated for July 28-30 at the JW Marriot, also includes the "Queen of Creole Cuisine," Leah Chase. The recent James Beard award winner will host a private dinner at Dooky Chase Restaurant on Thursday, July 28 for FestiGals Diva Package holders. The 93-year-old culinary connoisseur will also be featured in a session titled "Outside the Kitchen" discussing her plethora of life experiences beyond the Dooky Chase kitchen.
Darlings, this upcoming week is going to very special since I am looking forward to hosting the Annual Round Table Luncheon Saluting Tales of the Cocktail on Wednesday, July 20 at noon at Hotel Mazarin. I just heard from my darling friend George Sandeman of Sandeman Port that he is planning to be there.
Not one but two spirit makers have been invited: Alexandre Gabriel, President and owner of Maison Ferrand who will be presenting a tasting of his newest product Plantation Stiggins Pineapple Rum and Allen Katz introducing his Dorothy Parker Gin.
As in the past, it will be co-hosted by “Mr. and Mrs. Cocktail,” the one and only Ann Tuennerman, founder of Tales of the Cocktail, and her husband Paul G. Tuennerman. I have prepared a program that will include a Rum Tasting by Alexandre Gabriel, producer of fine spirits and owner of Maison Ferrand which is a highly regarded company that distributes its fine spirits in more than 40 countries, in some of the world’s most prestigious outlets.
We also will have a tasting of gin by the creator of Dorothy Parker Gin, Allen Katz of New York Distilling Company. The entertainment will go along with the theme and will be performed by talented Claudia Baumgarten who will talk about Dorothy Parker and her life during Prohibition. She will entertain us with songs from her new set of SONGS of FOOD & LOVE, and be accompanied on the piano by Jim Walpole.
As in the past, Champagne and wines will be flowing for the delicious three-course luncheon prepared by Chef Bellet. The price has been set at $55 all-inclusive.  We still have a few seats left but must need by today whether you are planning to join us. Call me at 504-495-9181.

Congrats to Muriel's Restaurant for winning 1st Place in the French Market Bartenders and Waiters Race! Vive la France! Happy Bastille Day!
