A Toast to NO: Juleps in June/Dinner Tribute to Chef Prudhomme/ Summer Wine

Memorial Day!

Darlings,

I hope you enjoyed as much as I did the Memorial Day Weekend that included, among other things, the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience, the Greek Festival and ceremonies in remembrance of our fallen heroes.

I will never forget the time that I was living in Ibiza, Spain and I flew to New Orleans at the tune of $1,900 to be at the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience. That is when I made up my mind that my beloved New Orleans is my home until I die. A TOAST TO THAT!Description: Emoji

Prior to the NOWFE, On Wednesday, I visited Houmas House. Mother Nature blessed us with the most beautiful day to visit my favorite plantation - Houmas House - The Sugar Palace also known as the “The Crown Jewel of Louisiana's River Road.”

I have been having a French friend, Alain Roux, staying with me for a few weeks. He has visited the Whitney and Oak Alley plantations but I promised him that he needed to experience the one and only "Sugar Palace" - Houmas House Plantation and Gardens. We were joined by my darling friend, conductor Paul Mauffrey (who experienced a thrill playing two of the vintage Steinways), Duchess Chiquita Bergen and my roommateDavid Martinis. We were hosted by talented Jim Blanchard and lovely Cecily Neville Boudreaux for a very delicious luncheon. I am still salivating the delicious eggplant with lump crabmeat and I also tasted from the buffet the fabulous red and beans and rice. My friends that have never been to Houmas House were also treated to a personalized tour of the mansion, the lovely gardens and of course the Turtle Bar and the exquisite Carriage House Restaurant.

That evening, it was time to attend the annual fundraiser for Project Lazarus. The Guardian Angel Award Gala was like, in the past, lovely and delicious. The elegant cocktail hour, dinner, auction and program was held at Messina’s at the Terminal at the Lakefront Airport. The elegant event recognized two of Project Lazarus’ most esteemed volunteers and supporters, David Cortez and Anne Milling. Project Lazarus helps empower people living with HIV/AIDS by offering important support services.

On Thursday, I was invited to attend the opening night of Wicked at the Saenger Theater. I have seen it many times but I think this production is one of the best so make sure you catch it. It is playing until June 19. Not to be missed!

OMG, the NOFWFE was indeed a wonderful Wine and Food Experience.
The annual New Orleans Wine and Food Experience brings together winemakers from all over the world, talented and well-known chefs and industry leaders. Here they showcase their talents and hard work during a series of events to educate, entertain and inspire both producers and consumers of food and wines.Royal Stroll with the Krewe of Cork- What fun!
On Saturday, it was time to attend the Grand Tasting (the only one, since this year the Friday Grand Tasting was eliminated). The Grand Tasting experience at NOWFE was just wonderful! It showcased more than 1,000 domestic and international vintages alongside delicious foods served by over 75 of New Orleans’ finest chefs and purveyors.

NOWFE gave away $80,000 to support culinary education in 2016. SoFab received $32,000 and the following organizations each receiving $8,000 apiece: Edible Schoolyard New Orleans, Delgado Culinary Arts, NOCCA Culinary Arts, John Folse Culinary Institute at Nicholls State University, The Louisiana Restaurant Association's Education Foundation and the UNO School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism.

The “King of Louisiana Seafood” Chef Blake Phillips of Sage in Monroe was crowned Louisiana Seafood King at NOWFE during the eighth annual Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off, hosted by the LA Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board. Nine chefs from across the state competed for the coveted title and the winner will represent the Louisiana seafood industry at events throughout the year. I cannot wait for next year.

I concluded my Memorial Day Weekend by pausing to remember our fallen soldiers and hosting a Margaritas Party for my neighbors.

Memorial Day is often confused with Veterans Day. Why? According to the Department of Veterans Affairs . . .
“Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military — in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served — not only those who died — have sacrificed and done their duty.”
Darlings, this week is another one that I wish I had a clone, since there is only one me!
I am going to start my week on Wednesday, June 1 by attending the Press Conference for the French Market’s 30th Anniversary Creole Tomato Festival. At 10:00 a.m.,  The Very Reverend Father Phillip G. Landry from St. Louis Cathedral will offer a blessing of three crates of tomatoes in front of French Market, where a larger than life Creole tomato cut-out decorates  the iconic archway

YOU DON'T KNOW THE HALF OF IT

New Orleans' only half-scripted, half-improvised and wholly original event!
Here’s how it works: Four short, brand new scripts are commissioned and then split into halves. One half goes to one actor and the other half to another. The actors never see the whole scene. Then on the night of the show, each actor is paired with an improviser. The only rules of the game are: 1) the actor always has the first line, and 2) the actor must remain loyal to the script no matter what the improviser conjures up. Throughout the course of this eight-scene evening, all four original scenes play out one side at a time.

In between scenes, each interlude is filled with music from the You Don’t Know the Bandcomprised of members from Sweet CrudeAlexis & the SamuraiJohnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes and The Plus One Show.

The other writers are Megan Eileen Kosmoski, Kenny Lass, and Erica Goostrey, one of my co-writers for Southern Rep's upcoming New Play Bacchanal (and in whose 24-Hour PlayI once played a rabbit Emoji)
The Actors are a fabulous bunch -- Tracey Collins, Martin Covert, Ashley Ricord Santos, & Philip Yiannopoulus!
And tho I don't know Improvisers Grace Blakeman & Emily Slazer, I'm thrilled Ian Hoch & Chris Kaminstein are the other two and hope they'll be doing my script.
Ya see, organizer/producer (and 2015 Big Easy Awards Entertainer Of The Year) Cecile Monteyne hasn't told me whose gonna be in my scenes so I'll be as surprised as you. And while the Improvisers have it easy, Actors who have participated before say it's the scariest gig they've ever had, like walking on a tightrope with no net!

WHEN: Sunday, June 5, doors open at 7pm, show starts at 7:30pm (Come early--the January show sold out!)

WHERE: Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre, 616 St. Peter Street, New Orleans, LA
HOW: Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at Le Petit’s Website,http://www.lepetittheatre.com
