A Toast to NO: WYES Gala/Dead Man Walking /Lark in the Park/

Darlings,
Last week, I had to work at the gallery all week since my assistant, Walter Veras, was out of the country and I just realized that I am not as young as I used to be. Working seven days a week and partying as well, took a toll on me.
So I am writing this column from beautiful Pensacola where my brother Lorenzo is spending a week and celebrating his birthday. As in the past, I will be staying just two nights to recharge my energy and spend quality time with him.
Last week, I had so much fun attending several great events that included Tops of the Town, a celebration of the top people, places and things in New Orleans, held at Generations Hall. This year the annual soiree was extra special, as it celebrated 50 years of New Orleans Magazine. The ‘50s-themed event  featured live entertainment by The Yat Pack, Robin Barnes and The Jailhouse Rockers, plus culinary creations from 20 local restaurants and caterers, and wine, Abita Beer and signature cocktails crafted by Bombora Vodka and CooranBong Australian Vodka.  I enjoyed those vodkas so much that I went to Dickie Bennan's Steak House for a “sinsational’ tasting.  You need to try them.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153232528675870.1073742614.581200869&type=1&l=0d47953368
On Thursday, I enjoyed so much attending, as a guest of Holley Haag of First NBC Bank, the always fun Go Red for Women Luncheon that benefits the  American Heart Association at the New Orleans Marriott.  The fashion show was delightful and I saw many of my friends on the runway.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153232577360870.1073742615.581200869&type=1&l=bfdb1735a3
On Friday, I took time to go and see the beautiful tulips by the Grand Lake in City Park. I also stopped at NOMA for the opening of the fabulous new exhibit "Self-Taught Genius" Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum. I loved it and will go to see it again.
On Saturday, it was time to sneak out of work for an hour to attend, as a judge, the Shangri-la Social Club presents “Alice's Un-Birthday Luncheon” at Antoine's.  Entertainment was by the talented trio of Becky Allen, Marshall Harrisand Jim Walpole on piano. Judging the hats was very hard because they were all beautiful, whimsical and very creative.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153241097550870.1073742616.581200869&type=1&l=581f78a6eb

Unfortunately, I went back to work until 6 p.m. and my body was exhausted so I had to miss the wonderful and always-fun CAC's SweetArts Ball.
I worked all day on Sunday and Monday but I just knew I had to have some rest and relaxation before the upcoming week.
I will be returning just in time to attend the fabulous WYES 2016 Gala, Downton Abbey - Going in Style on Thursday, March 3. It will be held at the lovely home of Lisa and Trip Ludwig. At the Patron Party, WYES will recognize Paulette and Frank Stewart with the WYES Chairman’s Award and Paul Spencer of the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation with the WYES President's Award. (See the calendar below for complete details.)
The Fourth Concert in Bishop Perry Center's free, public concerts is Thursday, March 3, St. Mary's Catholic Church, 6 p. m.

The New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation (NOHHF) is pleased to announce the Thirteenth Annual Tulane Maya Symposium and Workshop, titled “Ixiktaak: Ancient Maya Women” from March 3-6 at the New Orleans Museum of Art and Tulane University. This year’s symposium will focus on the significance of women in ancient Maya society.
Friday, March 4 is going to be very hard for me since it is the opening of the New Orleans Opera Association’s premiere production of Dead Man Walking at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. A modern, English language classic since its world premiere in 2000, Dead Man Walking is the story of a nun's journey as the spiritual advisor of a convicted murderer on death row.
This will be the first staging of the opera in Louisiana, where the story took place. Sister Helen Prejean served as the spiritual adviser to a young man in Angola State Penitentiary, just before he was put to death and she is expected to be in the audience for the Friday night performance. It should be an exciting night and you can read about it in the BEAUCOUP magazine section of this coming Thursday’s New Orleans Advocate (also posted on their website Wednesday night).
That night is also the always fun - Lark in the Park.
Join us for the premier party in the park to celebrate New Orleans City Park! Guests will enjoy delectable cuisine from over 40 local restaurants, fabulous cocktails, Bryan Subaru raffle, auctions, and more! Proceeds from this event will benefit the expansion of the Conservatory in the Botanical Garden.
Victory Swing Orchestra Salutes Ol' Blue Eyes March 5-6
The National WWII Museum's own Victory Swing Orchestra celebrates the most popular male singer to emerge from the WWII era-Frank Sinatra! Vocalist extraordinaire Clint Johnson and our fabulous 14-piece big band will swing Sinatra's greatest hits, such as Come Fly With Me, Fly Me To The Moon, I've Got You Under My Skin, The Way You Look Tonight, Luck Be A Lady, Pennies From Heaven, and many more. Classic big band hits by Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, and Glenn Miller will also be featured for your dancing pleasure. Don't miss out on this spectacular evening of dining and dancing as we celebrate the 100th birthday of a legend
On Sunday at Trinity Church: Sunday, March 6  at 5 pm: Duo Piano Kenneth Boulton and JoAnne Barry, Music for 4 Hands and solo piano
Also on Sunday, 9 pm: JAZZ Vespers:  Dr. Michael White, premier New Orleans clarinetist
The Jazz Vespers series is a short, late-night meditation featuring New Orleans top jazz musicians from 9 to 9:30 pm, the spiritual nature of jazz blends with Bible readings and Prayer in a spirited Lenten Offering
I am sure there will be many other affairs throughout the weekend.
But on Wednesday I have been invited to the Broadway in America's production of The Book of Mormon, March 9. I saw it the last time it here and it was fun.
Darlings, Fashion Week is March 13-19 and as such, I just want to remind you that the monthly Round Table Luncheon will be on Wednesday, March 16 at noon at Dickie Brennan's Bourbon House.
It will be co-hosted by Tracee Dundas, the creator and director of Fashion Week. We will not only celebrate Fashion with a Fashion Show but also St. Patrick’s Day. We will have as entertainers : Irish Vocalist Vali Talbot accompanied on the piano by talented pianist Jim Walpole.  prior to the Fashion  show and then talented violinist T-Ray the Violinist  who will be performing and wowing  guests with his contemporary violin music
Guests are encouraged to wear green!
The chef of The Bourbon House is preparing a 3-course menu that will be unforgettable and my darling friend Sandra Herman will provide the champagne and wine to go along with the delicious luncheon. The price all inclusive is $55. There is parking almost across the street at the old Maison Blanche Building for $6 for 2 hour or $10 a day.
Please make reservation at 504-495-9181 or reserve your table of ten. Cash or check preferred.
Have a great week.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
B orn in Malaga, Spain, Pablo Picasso is probably the most famous artist of the twentieth century. During his artistic career, which lasted more than 75 years, he created thousands of works, not only paintings but also sculptures, prints, and ceramics, using all kinds of materials.
He almost single-handedly created modern art. He changed art more profoundly than any other artist of the century. First famous for his pioneering role in Cubism, Picasso continued to develop his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical new idea, and it might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes.

New Orleans Opera Association

presents::

Dead Man Walking

I want the last thing you see in this world to be a face of love.
March 4 & 6, 2016
Mahalia Jackson Theatre for the Performing Arts
A modern classic since its premiere in 2000, Dead Man Walking is the story of a nun’s journey as the spiritual advisor of a convicted murderer on death row. From the shocking opening scene to the searing finale, this opera changes everyone who encounters it. Dead Man Walking, composed by Jake Heggie with libretto by Terrence McNally, is based on Sister Helen Prejean’s 1993 account of her work on death row at the Louisiana State Penitentiary. The popularity of the opera can be credited not only to the timeless relevance of its subject and the humanity of its story, but also to how successfully the  composer and librettist have captured the essence and impact of the story in an intense musical and dramatic setting.
