Darlings, Happy Carnival Time 2016

Lovely photo by Frank Stansbury of the Royalty at the Round Table Luncheon and the legendary social columnist Nell Nolan who gave us the scoop about the 2016 Carnival Season.

Darlings,
The chilly cold weather is prevailing during these past weeks and I cannot wait for the spring weather. I did enjoy attending a myriad of indoor fun events that kept me warm but I am already looking forward to the spring and warmer weather.
Darlings, as in the past, the highlight of my week was hosting the January Round Table Luncheon, the theme of which was "It is Carnival Time."
Legendary Al "Carnival Time" Johnson set the tone to the merriment and revelry of the luncheon by singing and playing on the piano his famous song, "Carnival Time," to the delight of the festive guests.
He was joined by seasoned entertainers Carl Mack and the reigning monarchs of the Krewe of Satyricon, Marshall Harris and Becky Allen with Jim Walpole on the piano.
But prior to the Mardi Gras festivities, guests enjoyed the Rivertown Theaters' performers of their upcoming musical, “Sweet Charity.” Shelbie Mac is in the title role that will be playing until January 31.
Legendary social columnist Nell Nolan shared all the inside scoop about the 2016 Carnival Season and was joined by Queen-elect of Satyricon 2016, Carl Mack, who spoke about the exciting gay balls.
Masked guests competed and won prices for their masks.
The January luncheon was the last one at Antoine's and I will keep you informed about where the new venue will be so stay tuned. https://www.facebook.com/frank.stansbury1/media_set?set=a.1202726859741803.1073741954.100000135025518&type=3
As the Downton Abbey season finale approaches, WYES invited fans of “Downton Abbey” for a tea celebrating the most-watched drama in PBS history (there’s wine, too!) at the exquisite home of Frances & Calvin Fayard on St. Charles Avenue and it was spectacular!https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153160450910870.1073742595.581200869&type=1&l=9af84c7a41
On Saturday I enjoyed attending the 31st Annual Louisiana American-Italian Sports Hall of Fame Banquet at the Hilton, It was chaired by my darling friend Mary Katherine Lonatro -Tusa and the Honorary Consul of Italy, Frank Maselli came to speak briefly about the event at the Round Table Luncheon and invited me and a friend to the fun and delicious banquet.
I met all the honorees and saw many old-time friends. Former 1971 Heisman Trophy runner-up, NFL running back and “Hill Street Blues” actor, Ed Marinaro, received the 2016 LAISHF National Award along with Dr. Maria Falco as the 2016 Louisana American-Italian Woman of the Year .https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153164900790870.1073742596.581200869&type=1&l=241e795038
As I was leaving the Italian American Banquet I saw my darling friend Janet Nagelin who invited me to greet some of my friends at the Krewe of Caman - The Military Officers' Wives' Club's Krewe of CAMAN (Coast Guard, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy). They looked like they were having fun. I want to be invited next year because I love to see men in uniforms!
Darlings, that was the extent of my social week. I am sorry I could not be at all the places that I invited to.
Before I go on to share all the fabulous events that are planned for this upcoming week. I was saddened by the death of our Retired Archbishop, Francis Bible Schulte, who quietly led the Archdiocese of New Orleans from 1989 until 2001, making Catholic education a focus of his 13-year tenure. He died Sunday in his native Philadelphia, according to the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He was 89.
I also learned of the untimely death of Jimmy Glickman, owner of the Louisiana Music Exchange on Magazine Street. He was a friend and mentor to many of the city’s top musicians, selling and fixing instruments for many years. He, too, will be missed.
This upcoming week, is going to be a hectic one as well.
I am looking forward to the media night or the opening of the Broadway production of “Motown” that will be playing at the Saenger Theater from Tuesday, January 19 to Sunday, January 24.
I am also looking forward to attending, on Friday, January 22, the fabulous Mystic Krewe of Satyricon’s 14th Bal Masque-Le Bal des Beaux Arts: A Night at the Museum, hosted by Varla Jean Merman at Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center, 8245 West Judge Perez Drive, Chalmette.
On Saturday, January  I have been  invited to the Krewe of Tucks' Mardi Gras Coronation Ball that will feature a mini parade to introduce the king & queen at the Marriott Grand Ballroom.
I am planning to be low-key this week because I have to save my energy for all the festivities associated with the Krewe of Cork and the Mystic Krewe of Barkus! So enjoy your week.

Born of the remains of the Krewe of Clones, which began parading in 1978, Krewe du Vieux marched for the first time in 1987. When the Krewe of Clones decided to become more respectable, Craig "Spoons" Johnson and Don Marshall decided to keep the parade's original raucous, art-inspired spirit alive in the Krewe du Vieux Carre (“Vieux Carre," which means "Old Square," refers to the French Quarter).
At first, the ragtag krewe had 16 subkrewes, and a collection of mule-drawn or hand-pulled handmade floats. But by 2001, KdV had its first title float, and its membership was growing. The numerous subkrewes meet in the "Den of Muses," a warehouse space, to bring together their costumes and floats. In 2006, KdV was the first parade to march post-Katrina, and garnered national attention for its tenacity and lightheartedness in the face of tragedy. That year's theme was "C'est Levee."
Krewe du Vieux is noted for wild satire, adult themes, and political comedy, as well as for showcasing some of the best brass and jazz bands in New Orleans.

Royal Sonesta New Orleans Announces 46th Annual ‘Greasing of the Poles’
Friday, February 5th at 10:00 a.m.300 Bourbon Street
Royal Sonesta New Orleans, Main Entrance
Royal Sonesta New Orleans presents the 46th Annual ‘Greasing of the Poles’
Greasing of the Poles embraces the spirit and cultural tradition of Mardi Gras. Royal Sonesta New Orleans originated this carnival ritual of greasing the building’s support poles as a practical means to deter over-zealous revelers from shimmying up to the coveted balcony space above. Nearly five decades later, the practice has evolved into a star-studded and music-filled event, spawning its own international fan club that hails from Switzerland to participate each year, plus a who’s who of carnival royalty.
This year’s theme, “Let Them Eat King Cake” is inspired by the era of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI. Actor and New Orleans native Bryan Batt will emcee the event. More details and a full entertainment line-up will be released in the coming weeks!
Friday, February 5th at 10:00 a.m.
300 Bourbon Street
Royal Sonesta New Orleans, Main Entrance
WHY:
Greasing of the Poles is the official kick-off to Mardi Gras weekend in the French Quarter and is an only-in-New Orleans spectacle not to be missed. For prime viewing, plan to arrive early!
The event is free and open to the public.
