A Toast to New Orleans : March 24-March 31

Darlings,

Greetings from beautiful Emerald Coast where I am spending my annual brief Spring Sojourn in Destin, Florida, recharging  my energy before the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival (March 24-26), as well as the upcoming French Quarter Festival (April 9-12)  and the New Orleans Jazz Festival (April 24-May 3).

Before I went to my brief holiday, I attended a myriad of fun events that kept me running from one to the other. This past week, I celebrated both St Patrick's Day and St. Joseph's Day in addition to NOMA's Art in Bloom and LA SPCA's Dog Afternoon.

Every year I look forward to donning one of my green outfit
s to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with my darling friend, Irish descendantKevin Kelly, owner of the exquisite "Sugar Palace," Houmas House Plantation and Garden. Kevin hosted a fabulous dinner at the Carriage House for the media and showered us with southern splendor and a delicious menu prepared by award-winning Chef Jeremy Langlois. I could not think of a better way to toast and feast St Patrick's Day than at Kevin's.  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152596419030870.1073742430.581200869&type=1&l=e7536b1651
Art in Bloom presented by IBERIABANK was beautiful. It was a five-day event showcasing over 100 exhibitors of creative and inspirational floral designs, sculptures and scenes in various categories. Proceeds from Art in Bloom benefit education projects and exhibitions at NOMA and community projects of The Garden Study Club of New Orleans, including the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, New Orleans Botanical Garden, Beauregard-Keyes House, Parkway Partners, Long Vue House and Gardens and the Herman
n-Grima and Gallier Houses. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152597629010870.1073742431.581200869&type=1&l=f0ad31abd0

On Thursday, St. Joseph's Day, it was a social whirl
My first event was "Business with Pleasure" at the beautiful Galvez Restaurant overlooking the mighty Mississippi River. The Spanish hors d'oeuvres -TAPAS were delicious.

New Orleans Auction Galleries held its monthly preview night at its new location: 333 St. Joseph Street, the former site of The Foundry where I sipped many wonderful wines and decadent cuisine. The auction house, known as Cakebread Decorative Arts, is situated in a newly renovated historic building in the heart of the city’s historic Arts District and specializes in the finest paintings, furniture, sterling and coin silver, estate jewelry, decorative arts and more.

My next stop was at the Mexican Consulate Gallery where photographer De Jay A Frogel presented his photographic exhibit of "Maya Ruins and the Passage of Time: The Stephens & Catherwood Project." The photos are beautiful!

Naturally, after attending all these events I physically exhausted so after attending and participating on the annual LA SPCA's Dog
&Afternoon I decided I needed to join my brother, Lorenzo Bergen, for some RR in beautiful Destin.

This upcoming week - Spring weather hopefully will be with us so we can attend all the fun festivities that have been scheduled.  Stev
eland Hardaway Morris, better known by his stage name, Stevie Wonder, the legendary musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist will be playing on Tuesday, March 24 at Smoothie King Center.

This week is Spring Fiesta (March 21-29). Once a year, during the Annual Spring Fiesta and Historic Home Tour, beautiful private homes  are opened up for public tours and visitors have an opportunity to explore the interiors of 20 privately owned homes in theFrench QuarterUptown and the Garden District. Visitors get to experience the grandeur of the past and see what a New Orleans home might have looked like a century or more ago.

The highlight of the Spring Festival is a daylong series of events designed to entertain, educate, and allow all to revel in the cultural heritage that is uniquely New Orleans. The festival includes a parade of horse-drawn carriages through the French Quarter and the presentation of the Spring Fiesta Queen and her court at Jackson Square.

During this time, also, the city gets to display its history, charm and uniqueness through educational and entertaining presentations and events. Spring Fiesta is a time when New Orleans opens its heart and homes to visitors from all over the world, inviting them to explore its many fine homes, enchanting courtyards and elegant gardens during an azalea-filled spring. Tours of private homes, gardens and courtyards complete the remainder of the activities. For more information about Spring Fiesta call 504-581-1367 or email neworleansspringfiesta@yahoo.com. Where's Stella?

In celebration of Tennessee Williams' birthday, the public is invited to join us for an improv performance on the streets of the French Quarter. In honor of "A Streetcar Named Desire", Stanley is searching for Stella on his route to deliver moonshine. Beginning at Jackson Square on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 5pm, Stanley will load the moonshine in the trunk of a 1926 Model T Ford pickup and be followed by the Young Pinstripe Jazz Band with a 2nd line to Pat O'Brien's.

Stanley will shout up to the balcony for "Stellaaaaa!" but he seems to have just missed her and he'll continue his moonshine delivery route along Royal and Bourbon Streets, stopping at the Monteleone Hotel to meet up with festival participants. The performance concludes at Backspace Bar & Kitchen, a literary themed bar located at 139 Chartres Street. Here, Stanley finds Stella, played by Courtney Boe, and delivers the moonshine. The Young Pinstripe Jazz Band will play prohibition era jazz music in the 100 block of Chartres. While at Backspace, shot girls will serve moonshine from Buffalo Trace Distillery. The birthday celebration continues at the Hotel Monteleone with celebrity performances and birthday cake at 6:30 p.m. Go to tennesseewilliams.net for tickets to that event and more info.
