A Toast to New Orleans March 17-23-Happy St Patrick and St Joseph‏

'Happy St. Patrick 's Day'

Darlings Happy St. Patrick's Day St. Joseph's Day!

One of the many things that I love about New Orleans is the many opportunities that it offers to celebrate our cultural/ social diversity.

I started my week at the annual Mad Hatter's Annual Luncheon whose theme was "Uniquely New Orleans." I could not think of anything that I could wear on my head except a huge hat with the masks of Comedy and Tragedy and the colors that represent Mardi Gras - Green, Gold and Purple. Carl Mack Presents at his new location at 318 N. Rampart St., was my savior. I always find what I am looking for at his costume shop. The luncheon that included a fashion show by Saks Fifth Avenue was delicious, interesting and just lovely.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152581007695870.1073742424.581200869&type=1&l=e4396cac8c

Besides the Mad Hatter's Luncheon, I was looking forward to hosting the March Round Table Luncheon at our new location at the JW Marriott. It was very informative, entertaining and delicious.

The Luncheon celebrated the upcoming Spring Festivals and included  Marci Schramm, Executive Director of the French Quarter Festival, (April 9-12); Kia Robinson, Programs, Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation (April 24-May 3); and Terry Verigan, Treasurer of the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival (March 25-29.) The live entertainment was provided by talented vocalist Robin Barnes, accompanied by pianist Jim Walpole with a guest appearance by talented comedian/ singer Becky Allen. The next one will be on Wednesday, April 22 at noon at the JW Marriott. Additional information to follow.Marriot Hotel Canal St.

Thursday, was a very busy night. I started it at the Grand Re-Opening of the Desire Oyster Bar at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. Great food and camaraderie.

That evening was the lovely Bishop Perry Center's "A Musical Prelude to the Celebration of Easter," Concert Four. The free concert, featured soprano Sarah Jane McMahon performing with pianist Jesse Reeks and his talented wife Lulu Reeks on violin. The concert took place at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1116 Chartres St., part of the Ursuline Convent.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152585653050870.1073742426.581200869&type=1&l=9980da21a2

On Friday, it was time to pay my respects to my darling friend, Chet Pourciau,  who died at the tender age of 44.Visitation was held Friday (March 13) Jacob Schoen & Son, 3827 Canal St. and it drew in the artist/social/cultural community. It included live music, canapes/sushi, libations and champagne/wine. It was really lovely.

Talking about funerals, this past week, we lost so many prominent members of our community.
Besides Chet Pourciau, we lost the indefatigable Lisa Sins of Arnaud's. Lisa was the Grand Diva of the 2014 FestiGals and she will be missed.

Her funeral was on Monday and it was extremely well attended.

We also lost Chris Rudge, founder and co-owner of Bacchanal in New Orleans, who died at age 40

We also lost, this week, Dick Brennan Sr., New Orleans restaurateur, at age 83http://www.nola.com/dining/index.ssf/2015/03/dick_brennan_sr_new_orleans_re.html.

Our deepest condolences to their families.

Life went on and my next event after attending the visitation for Chet was the New Orleans Pelicans' annual fundraising event, “Toast for the Coast,” presented by Fox Sports New Orleans, Chevron and Cox Communications at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas All proceeds from “Toast for the Coast” will support coastal restoration education and research.

The evening continued and could not have been more beautiful for the packed Lark in the Park presented by Friends of City at New Orleans City Park Botanical Garden.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152586792615870.1073742427.581200869&type=1&l=a43e735ade

On Saturday, I sneaked out of Casell-Bergen Gallery to see the St. Patrick's Day Parade in the Irish Channel. It was really lovely and I had the opportunity to stop by the lovely antique-filled home of Judge Louis Volz and his partner Frank Cole where spicy gumbo, crawfish and green daiquiris were in the menu! YUMMY!https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152588415030870.1073742428.581200869&type=1&l=345f572330

That evening it was time to attend the nautical themed Alliance Francaise de la Nouvelle-Orleans Gala - Titled "Captain's Dinner on the SS France, Versailles of the Atlantic!" at the JW Marriott It was just lovely and elegant.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152589127335870.1073742429.581200869&type=1&l=9273605136

Thank God I took Sunday off so I could attend the fabulous production of the New Orleans opera
 Lucia Di Lammermoor.
Darlings, the New Orleans Opera Association's production of Lucia di Lammermoor, the dramma tragico (tragic opera) in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti.  Lucia Di Lammermoor was one of the best that I have ever seen as evident by the clamoring standing ovations that received at the end. Several of our local operatic talent shined in the production.

Darlings before I went to see to the opera, I stopped by the Launch Party for Randy Fertel's "A Taste for Chaos," at the Cabildo. The book examines how improvisation impacts the arts and our lives and is a must for dedicated readers and those who would understand why do what we do, why we are willing to jump off the high board just for the high of living in the moment, for those who would understand how the creative force in all of us takes a quantum leap when we dare to improvise

As seen through the eyes of the precocious 10-year-old Paulie Dufour, When Ya Smilin' recounts a year in the life of a Ninth Ward family. Anyone who grew up in New Orleans will grin a nostalgic smile from remembrances of Pontchartrain Beach, Mardi Gras with Mel Levitt, and picnics in City Park. When Ya Smilin' strikes that harmonious chord of common humanity that will not only make the locals laugh and cry, but those who now call New Orleans home as well. New Orleans Ballet Association and The NOCCA Institute Co-present

Unión Tanguera
In the full-evening, contemporary tango show
 Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night)

The sexy and flirtatious tango takes center stage when Unión Tanguera makes its New Orleans debut with the stylish, full-evening show Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night), acontemporary tango event, hailed by The Oregonian as "extremely seductive and ravishing." The New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA) and The NOCCA Institute present three performances at NOCCA's Freda Lupin Memorial Hall on Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21 at 8 PM, and Sunday, March 22 at 2 PM.

Union Tanguera was founded in 2002 by world renowned and trailblazing tango partners Claudia Codega and Esteban Moreno. An innovative, contemporary tango company that fuses Argentine tango with modern dance, French theatrical sensibilities and humor are added to create performances that are sublime.  Based in Lyon, France and Buenos Aires, Argentina, this ensemble of seven virtuoso tango dancers and a quartet of Buenos Aires' finest musicians are reimagining and experimenting with the traditional style of pure tango and creating an "absolutely authentic and polished piece of contemporary theater," raves Society, Austria.

Set in a nightclub at the end of a late-night milonga, Nuit Blanche illuminates the wanderings, desires, instincts and fears that unfold in one sleepless night.  The music for the Nuit Blanche combines traditional tango recordings and original compositions performed live by Buenos Aires-based Quartet Lupanar. Acoustic and electronic sounds converge to create a unique soundtrack, featuring violin, bandoneon, piano and double bass.

Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night) opens on a scene in a cabaret-milonga (nighttime tango club). It is the end of a traditional tango show, when the performers return to their lives as milongueros (milonga goers), joining their audience to continue dancing. A woman and a man improvise in a confined, almost pitch black area while the rhythmic and cyclic bandoneón music plays in the background. Out of this intimate environment arises true-to-life tango - traditional in its soul and at times experimental in its form. The dancers weave in and out of their sensual abrazos (embrace) with mixed emotions, including loneliness, hope, despair, friendship, passion, love, celebration and defeat. Nuit Blanche explores a night when social dancing brings people together using tango as their poetic means of communication.

For the concept and parts of the choreography of Nuit Blanche, Codega and Moreno worked in collaboration with the company Modos Vivendi, directed by Rolan Van Löor and Jorge Crudo. Since its premiere in 2010, Nuit Blanche has toured Italy, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States.

Single tickets for Unión Tanguera are $50, and students with a valid student ID can purchase tickets for $35. Tickets may be purchased from the NOBA Box Office at 504-522-0996 or at www.NOBAdance.com  through 4:30 PM on Friday, March 20. The NOCCA Box Office will open at 7 PM Friday and Saturday for sales and will-call, and at 1 PM on Sunday.

Unión Tanguera in the Community
Artistic directors and celebrated master teachers Claudia Codega and Esteban Moreno will teach a tango master class on Thursday, March 19 from 7:15 - 8:15 PM at NOCCA's Chevron Forum, 5 Press Street (across Chartres Street from the main NOCCA campus). Pre-registration is required, and the master class is $15 per person.  Following the class will be a FREE community milonga with members of Unión Tanguera from 8:15 - 10 PM. To register for the master class or for more information, call 504.522.0996 ext. 203 or visit www.NOBAdance.com.

The Grand Parade (of the 20th Century)

Double Edge Theatre makes its regional debut with a mix of movement, text, and fleeting images that evoke the mythology of the 20th century. Equal parts circus, vaudeville, and magical realism, this performance encompasses humanity's simultaneous predilection toward creation and destruction in the pursuit of progress.
