Rain did not stop fun loving guests from attending the City Park Conservancy (CPC) celebrating City Park’s spring awakening with its signature seasonal fundraiser, Lark in the Park presented by Capital One, on Friday, March 8. The annual event treated guests to a glamorous gathering featuring live music, delectable dishes from restaurants across the city, and specialty cocktails within the New Orleans Botanical Garden and the Pavilion of the Two Sisters. To my delight Mums Champagne was flowing. VIP guests started the evening in the Botanical Garden with an exclusive preview party at 7pm featuring live entertainment from Geovane Santos. May be an image of 2 people What a fun and memorable evening when New Orleans’s own The Dixie Cups celebrated the 60th Anniversary of their hit, “ Chapel of Love,” with a lovely concert at Loyola University. The Dixie Cups – sisters Barbara Ann and Rosa Lee Hawkins and their cousin, Joan Marie Johnson – began singing together in grade school while living in the Calliope Housing Project in New Orleans. The trio shot to fame in 1964 with their hit song, “Chapel of Love,” which knocked the Beatles out of the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and sold more than 1 million copies. The Dixie Cups had several other songs hit the Top 100, most notably the popular Mardi Gras song, Iko Iko, in 1965. The trio was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2007. Johnson died in 2016, and Rosa Lee Hawkins died in 2022. As 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of “Chapel of Love,” the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is honoring The Dixie Cups on this year’s poster. The trio, now consisting of Barbara Ann Hawkins, Athelgra Neville and Naydja CoJoe, also will perform on the festival’s first day, April 25. Athelgra Neville is the daughter of Art Neville and niece of Arthel Neville, who is Art’s sister. She said their relationship was mended before he passed away. “Because I did appreciate him finally, I never really understood after 2013 that he absolutely had my back on everything,” said Edwards. The Stella Shouting Contest replays the iconic scene where Stanley yells up to Stella in the play, A Streetcar Named Desire. Actors Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus) and Leslie Castay (both currently filming Mayfair Witches) will be there to judge, with Bryan Batt hosting and Errol Laborde as contest emcee. Acting duo Beth Bartley d’Amour and Todd d’Amour will portray Stella and Stanley. The event is sponsored by a generous grant from The Goldring Family Foundation. The contest will be a fundraiser for the New Orleans Family Justice Center, a network of agencies assisting anyone affected by domestic violence. The Festival is happy to partner with the NOFJC as the beneficiary of the fundraiser, as well as to promote the new suicide hotline, 9-8-8, to bring attention to services available to people experiencing domestic violence or a mental health crisis. The Stella Shouting Contest is free and open to the public. Those interested in participating in the contest should arrive 15 minutes early and sign up. The Stella Shouting Contest kicks off The Tennessee Williams and New Orleans Literary Festival, which is in its 38th year of celebrating contemporary literature, theatre, New Orleans culture, and, of course, Tennessee Williams. Festival dates are March 20 - 24. Speakers include Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Cunningham, National Book Award-winner Justin Torres, and multi-award winning novelist Colm Tóibín.
