A Toast to NO- Nov. 3-10: Louisiana SPCA's Howling Success/Simply Irma and more

Darlings,

Halloween week 2015 was a very memorable one that was topped off by the impressive win of our beloved Saints against the NY Giants. http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2015/11/new_orleans_saints_giants_reca.html

The inclement weather didn't stop revelers from enjoying the festivities associated with Halloween and many took advantage of the beautiful weather in Friday to enjoy it.

I was invited by Brett and Cheryl Bauman to their annual  Halloween Party. This year's theme was “BOOgie Nights,” who's who from the disco world were all there, from Rocky Horror Picture Shows to Saturday Night Fever and even some vampire and witch crashers.Trixie Minx and her burlesque dancing crew entertained in the laser light show and a tarot card reader told your future while the Ouija board translated deadly tales of woe. A night to never forget and only the future will tell how fabulous next year will be.

My Halloween week started on Tuesday, when I enjoyed seeing the opening of the Broadway Across America's production of “Cinderella” at the Saenger Theater.  It was really lovely and spectacular.

On Wednesday, I attended the unveiling and dedication of The Helis Foundation Enrique Alférez Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Botanical. Mother Nature blessed us with a glorious day to enjoy the outdoor activity

That evening, I attended  the New Orleans Magazine's Halloween Hobnobers at the Hard Rock Cafe and, as always, it  was  a lot of fun.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153034135910870.1073742548.581200869&type=1&l=0726c78a1b

The annual 58th Annual Weiss Awards at the NO Hyatt was lovely. I saw so many friends that were being honored.
The New Orleans Council for Community and Justice, the city's oldest human relations organization, recognized the seven honorees' "exceptional civic and humanitarian contributions" to the greater New Orleans community.
This year's recipients were Robert W. Merrick, chief executive officer and board chairman of Latter & Blum Companies; Sonia Perez, president of AT&T Louisiana; M. Cleland Powell III, executive vice president and senior commercial manager, Iberia Bank; Zack Rosenburg and Liz McCartney, co-founders of St. Bernard Project; Warner L. Thomas, president and chief executive officer, Ochsner Health System; and Jimmie M. Woods Sr., chief executive officer, Metro Disposal, Inc
I concluded my week by having drinks and delicious appetizers at Mizado Cucina as part of the Dining with a Purpose on the Day of the Dead Celebration . 15% of the dining proceeds benefited the La. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Before I share with you all the exciting fun events that will take place this upcoming, I want to share the sad news that another pillar of our community has passed away.  Charles I. "Dene" Denechaud III.  Dene will be missed - My condolence to his darling wife Pat Denechaud and the family.

This week I am looking forward to “There's No Place Like Home: The Wizard of Oz with Orchestra” presented by our own Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra
Tickets: * Friday, November 6, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Orpheum Theater and Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. at Orpheum Theater.

Celebrate 70 years of “The Wizard of Oz” by dressing up as your favorite character from the film for a chance to win a $100 Amazon Gift Card! One winner will be chosen per concert by audience vote during intermission. Plus, arrive early to get your photo taken outside the Orpheum Theater!
This coming Saturday, once again, I going to be wishing that I had a clone because there more fun soirees that I could attend. I will be going to the LA SPCA Howling Success Patron Party & Gala at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

I probably will also stop by to see “Simply Irma” at the Anthony Bean Community Theater for a private, VIP pre-party hosted by FestiGals.
Grammy Award Winner, New Orleans very own “Soul Queen,” Irma Thomas, plays herself in “Simply Irma,” the musical portrayal of her career that has spanned more than 50 years. Between the tales of successes and hardships, you'll be dancing in the aisles to our 2015 Grand Diva's hits such as "Time Is On My Side," "It's Raining," "You Can Have My Husband" and more – about 20 songs in all. Should be a great time!

This coming weekend also starts the First Annual Birdfoot Festival Residency Program, featuring The Argus Quartet. There will be a series of chamber music-related activities, starting Sunday, November 8 with a free “sampling” of what’s to come at the George & Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center at 1225 North Rampart Street. A full week of concerts and dining events follows, culminating with reasonably priced admission concerts at Café Istanbul on Thursday the 12th and at the Marigny Opera House on Friday the 13th.

For all lovers of beautiful chamber music, this is not to be missed. You can read more about it, including a full festival schedule, in this Thursday’s New Orleans Advocate BEAUCOUP arts and entertainment magazine, posted online Wednesday evening.

And, before getting into more about this week’s events, I want to offer my congratulations to Heather Alice Shapiro, daughter of my editor Dean Shapiro, on her marriage Halloween Night to Christopher “Priest” Brumley, son of James and Dee McLin Brumley of Tickfaw, LA. I was invited but, unfortunately, couldn’t go because of all the other exciting Halloween events that same night. I heard it was a lot of fun, though. Nearly everyone, including the bride and groom, was in costume and the food and libations were overflowing. Congratulations once again to the happy couple! I wish you both many happy years together.

Please join us for a talk and signing with Poppy Tooker featuring highly anticipated, just released TUJAGUE'S COOKBOOK.

Part dramatic history, part eerie ghost stories, part a study of marketing genius, and part a celebration of restaurant excellence, this cookbook by author and culinary historian Poppy Tooker masterfully combines all the myriad strands that fill the rooms of Tujague's beautifully restored establishment into a whole cloth of foodie lore.

Tooker focuses on the second-oldest restaurant in New Orleans with its more-than-a-century-old tradition of serving excellent, fresh Creole cuisine in the heart of the French Quarter. More than a cookbook, this foray into history offers food and beverage recipes from the 1850s to today along with memorabilia from the restaurant's archives and stunning modern photographs from Sam Hanna and Louis Sahuc.

The three “LOUISIANA HISTORY ALIVE” historical characters on-site from 5:00-7:00 p.m. will be:
1. Baroness Pontalba (1795-1874): Micaela Almonester, Baroness de Pontalba was born in 1795, the daughter of the richest man in New Orleans. At age 15, she married her French cousin, Celestin Delfau de Pontalba, the Baron. After years of enduring isolation and abuse at the hand of her father-in-law who tried to control her fortune, he shot her four times before he turned his pistol on himself. The Baroness survived and returned to New Orleans in 1849 and constructed the Pontalba apartment buildings and landscaping of Jackson Square.
2. John James Audubon (1785-1851): Naturalist, ornithologist, and painter John James Audubon was born in France but identified himself as a native Louisianan. He is best known for his pictorial survey “The Birds of America,” which was published in an eighty-seven part series between 1827 and 1838, featuring more birds from Louisiana than any other state. It was a critical success and made him famous. In New Orleans, Audubon Park, Audubon Zoo, and the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas are named after him.
3.. Andrew Jackson (1767 – 1845): Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United State but is most revered in New Orleans for leading 5,000 soldiers in the defeat of 7,500 British in New Orleans on January 8, 1815. He was dubbed a national hero and received the thanks of Congress and gold medal. He earned the nickname “Old Hickory” because his troops used to say that he was “as tough as old hickory wood.” Jackson Square is named in his honor
