A TOAST TO NO: Art for Art's Sake/Antoine's Gala/Tremé Fest

Darlings,

The hot months of summer are gone and our city is enjoying seasonally lovely autumn weather.

Between soirees I was glued to the TV, enjoying the historic visit of charismatic Pope Francis to Cuba and the US. I am sorry my mother is gone as she would have enjoyed his visit.

Once again last week there more social events than I could possibly attend but, of those that I did, I enjoyed them tremendously.

I started my week by stopping by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art to see the Day of the Dead Altar or “Dia de los Muertos” by talented local artist Cynthia Ramirez. The tradition of Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is celebrated in Mexico, the southwestern U.S. and parts of Latin America. During this celebration, families come together to pay respect to relatives who have died, and to celebrate their life and rebirth in another world. Anthropologists and historians say that the holiday is a blend of the Catholic All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days and pre-Columbian traditions that honored ancestors in a celebration of the dead. It is generally celebrated with the creation of altars to the dead featuring food, paper decorations and representations of skeletons.

The Ogden honored this tradition with a series of events focused around the altar. This year’s altar is dedicated to Theodore Emile “Bo” Dollis, longtime Big Chief of the Wild Magnolias Mardi Gras Indians, who passed away this past January at the age of 71. Chief Dollis received numerous honors, including Offbeat Magazine’s 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award, a St. Joseph’s Night celebration in his honor, and a National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship for his lifelong work in sustaining the traditional culture of the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians.

I also stopped at the Strictly Biz Night presented by Biz New Orleans at Four Winds, 210 Baronne St. This building holds a lot of memories for me since, for years, I used to go there to see my dentist, Dr. Reinhardt. Now it is a beautiful rental property with spectacular views of the CBD.

St. Elizabeth's Guild's annual Volunteer Activists 2015 Luncheon and Fashion Show was SUPERB! So many of my friends were being honored and the others were models in the fashion show staged by Dillard’s.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152983768965870.1073742521.581200869&type=1&l=d45b1dec79

NOMA's annual fall soiree in the lovely Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden was spectacular! This year's LOVE in the Garden, presented by Regions Bank, honored New Orleans artists: Dawn DeDeaux, Tina Freeman, Susan Gisleson ,Delaney Martin, Chandra McCormick and Keith Calhoun and featured cuisine from over 60 restaurants and caterers, live performances and more. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152984707425870.1073742522.581200869&type=1&l=59833d2f1b

Darlings, the evening kept going for me and my escort Sammy Steele III and our next soiree was the American Cancer Society's 15th Annual Belles & Beaus Ball of New Orleans at Mardi Gras World. This year’s theme was ‘70s-inspired and featured live music and performances, auctions and food from more than 60 New Orleans’ restaurants.
The annual event honored 20 individuals who have made significant contributions in the fight against cancer and was hosted by three-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and Fox 8 anchor, Nancy Parker, along with her husband, longtime newsman turned public information officer for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Glen Boyd. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152984735615870.1073742523.581200869&type=1&l=722cab5f57
The historic Napoleon House was the setting for the lovely VCPORA's Vive Le Vieux Carré Gala. The setting, the delicious food by the Ralph Brennan's Group, the entertainment and the fabulous auctions items made it a very memorable evening.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152986975360870.1073742524.581200869&type=1&l=1cdc7581ac

This upcoming week is going to be another hectic one. But what else is new?

During the first week of October and there will be myriad of great soirees, starting on Thursday, October 1st, when there is a parade passing by Casell-Bergen Gallery, 1305 Decatur - October 1, 2015.Wine or beer will be waiting for you so you can enjoy: “Merci for the Magic”, the First Annual Halloween Kick Off Parade to Roll October 1, 2015
“Merci for the Magic”, the French Quarter’s first annual Halloween kick off parade is scheduled to roll October first at sundown, 7 p.m. Central time. The parade consists of local businesses and organizations that are Halloween related and who want to thank the residents of the French Quarter for all their support throughout the year.
On Friday, I am looking forward to the The Pink Gala hosted sponsored by Maria Muro, publisher of New Orleans Living Magazine at the Eiffel Society on Friday, October 2 in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Gala will honor the outstanding achievements of the survivors and crusaders. It is at 7 p.m., starting with cocktails and 7:30 p.m. for the Gala. It is by invitation only but I am sure that I have given you an invitation to the festive soiree with a touch of PINK!
I will be rushing out of the GAla to attend Le Petit Theatre's

OUR TOWN  By Thornton Wilder | October 2 - 18

Newly appointed Artistic Director, Maxwell Williams, makes his New Orleans theatre debut directing Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-     winning masterpiece. Groundbreaking at the time of its premiere, and beloved ever since, Our Town tells the captivating tale of two intertwined families, and the small town of Grover’s Corners, U.S.A. Using the history of New Orleans, and particularly Le Petit Théâtre for inspiration, our fresh take on this quintessential American play will re-invigorate your love of drama."Our Town" opens the first season with Williams as artistic director and Katie Hallman as managing director. The rest of the season includes: "The Bluest Eye," Dec. 4 through 20; "Sleeping Beauty," Jan. 15-Feb. 14; "The Glass Menagerie," March 18-April 3, and "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," May 20-June 5.

Ballet aficionados will enjoy the Friday, October 2, 8 p.m. opening night performance of “Orfeo” at the Marigny Opera House. Based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and his descent into the Underworld to rescue his beloved Eurydice, the two-act ballet was created by Marigny Opera Ballet’s director, Dave Hurlbert and is being choreographed by Maya Taylor. A 13-piece orchestra conducted by Francis Scully will perform an original score composed by Tucker Fuller. The lead dancers in the production are Trey Mauldwin as Orfeo and Anna Iosipiv as Eurydice. Set design is by C. Robert Holloway and costumes are by Peter Lee.

“Orfeo” will be repeated Saturday and Sunday nights, also at 8:00. General admission is $30 and $20 for students and seniors (plus service fees). Tickets for the performance plus the opening night Patron Party following the performance at Feelings Café (2600 Chartres Street) are $50-$75. For information call (504) 948-9998, email info@marignyoperahouse.org or visit their website, www.marignyoperahouse.org. The Marigny Opera House is at 725 St. Ferdinand Street, New Orleans, in the now-deconsecrated Holy Trinity Church. You can read more about “Orfeo” in this Thursday’s New Orleans Advocate BEAUCOUP magazine; also posted online Wednesday night.
This weekend : To raise money for repairs to St. Augustine historic church ahead of its 175th anniversary, the Historic Faubourg Tremé Neighborhood Association will throw a three-day festival next weekend that includes a patron event, a block party with music, food and crafts, and a gospel Mass.(see calendar below for schedule)

On Saturday, I will again be wishing I had a clone because it is the annual CAC's Art for Arts' Sake.  Created by the Contemporary Arts Center in 1980, this annual rite of fall has become one of the hottest events of the year for art lovers in and around New Orleans. Visit http://cacno.org/AFAS2015 for more information.

That night, October 3, is also the eagerly anticipated 175th Anniversary of Antoine's Restaurant Gala. The Gala is going to be a wonderful night of  delicious French-Creole cuisine, Prohibition-inspired libations, faux gambling, live jazz music from theJimmy Maxwell Orchestra and pianist/vocalist Giselle Bonfaire, a 'secret' speakeasy room, champagne and wine lounge and a dessert parlor! It is going to be a great party celebrating the anniversary and bringing the restaurant back to its fun Prohibition era days! The Southern Food and Beverage Museum is happy to announce that the Cirque de Cuisine: A Kitchen Tour, will be taking place on Sunday, October 4, from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. Tour guests will enjoy a unique opportunity to view six historic and beautiful private kitchens located throughout the French Quarter.

I have been  invited to attend Celebrate Sukkot at NCJW Opening Sunday Brunch titled
“Resilience under the Oaks: The Past, Present and Future of City Park.” It is sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, Greater New Orleans Section, on Sunday, October 4, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the home of Susan and Bill Hess, 8 Garden Lane, New Orleans.
Revel in Sukkot and its connection to the outdoors as Bob Becker, CEO of City Park, discusses the park’s history, including its Jewish connections, and shares details of its renaissance since Katrina.
Named recently as one of the “Heroes of Recovery” by New Orleans Magazine, Mr. Becker is credited, not only with repairing the catastrophic damage done by Katrina, but also remaking it into one of the Top Ten public parks in the country—now visited by 14 million people annually. Since the storm, Mr. Becker has put together a public/private-financing plan that has raised over $122 million.  Before coming to City Park, he was the Senior Vice President for the Audubon Nature Institute and was the Executive Director of the New Orleans City Planning Commission during most of the 1980s.
I will be rushing out to attend the matinee performance of JPAS' “My Fair Lady” at its new performing arts center. I cannot wait.
Darlings, have a wonderful autumn week.

Michael Murphy - Fear Dat
Fear Dat New Orleans explores the eccentric and often macabre dark corners of America's most unique city. In addition to detailed histories of bizarre burials, ghastly murders, and the greatest concentration of haunted places in
 America.

Alyne A Pustanio - Haunting Tales of Old New Orleans, Volume One: History, Legends and Lore
The city of New Orleans has a long and fabled history, shaped since its founding by the cultures and traditions of the peoples of classical Europe who came to call it home. These people also brought with them their own beliefs about the supernatural and the unexplained. Now, almost three hundred years later, New Orleans is distinguished as the most haunted city in the United States, due in large part to the blending of its fascinating legends and its mythic folklore. From out of the shadows of this strange, compelling past come the spellbinding stories found in this volume.

Ten years ago Ricky and friends did a show at Le Chat Noir to help boost the spirits of a city devastated by Katrina.  It was scheduled to play for two weeks, and ended up playing thirteen months.  Now, he's bringing back the show to celebrate how far we've come !   (Will FEMA always be a joke?)
For four performances only he'll recreate his New Orleans songs and characters with their "Yatitude" about the storm.  Join him in what we do best here -- laugh at ourselves!

Tim Youd journeys across the world to retype 100 works of literature-some canonical, others obscure-in locations germane to each novel. In these charged locations, he uses the original make and model of the typewriter employed by the book's author to retype each novel in its entirety. While in Louisiana, Youd will be performing live in NOMA's galleries and in locations throughout the state, retyping a series of novels set in Louisiana that will include everything from Walker Percy's The Moviegoer to John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces.
With the original people who made this happen -- Jefferson Turner on piano, Brian Johnston on quick-changes, and Su Gonczy singing incredible back-up!
