A Toast to NO: August 18-25:Round Table Luncheon at Antoine's and more

Darlings,

Another fabulous steamy summer week has gone by in my beloved New Orleans. As I get older I find that the heat does take some of my energy away so I need to be selective about what events to attend.

My week started on Tuesday, when I participated at the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana's annual Trade Show at the Harrah's Hotel. It was very successful; saw old friends and met new ones.

On Wednesday, I donned my beautiful cowboy hat to attend the delicious Grass-Fed Beef  Picnic from Gonsoulin Cattle Ranch at Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse.  Every year, the Steakhouse is transformed into an indoor picnic for one night, featuring grass-fed beef from Gonsoulin Cattle Ranch in New Iberia. In addition to expertly prepared beef, there were bountiful sides, decadent desserts, craft cocktails and artisan wine.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit Grow Dat Youth Farm. I loved it.  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152897519950870.1073742497.581200869&type=1&l=42e4c5c4f5

That evening, I left  the Picnic early so I could attend the lovely FREE concert of "The Best of Bon Operatit! on Bourbon Street" Bon Operatit! closed out their 5th season with an encore of fan favorites over the past 5 years with the "Opera Returns to Bourbon Street" series.

On Thursday, my first stop was the lovely opening reception at the Mexican Consulate's gallery of "El Tiempo" & "Laberintos Mentales" by artists Patrica Jordan and Francisco Magallan
My evening continued and I loved attending the world premiere of the stage version of V.C. Andrews’ bestselling book, “Flowers in the Attic." It was presented at the Old Marquer (formerly the Shadowbox) Theatre in the Faubourg Marigny.

On Friday, I enjoyed the Louisiana Late Night at NOMA. It was awesome. I enjoyed seeing Amanda Shaw, attending the lecture byHoward Sutcliffe, Principal Conservator and lecture: “Conservation of the Butler Greenwood parlor at the New Orleans Museum of Art”. I also enjoyed seeing the lovely exhibition and seeing old friends.

On Saturday, I left work early so I could attend the highly anticipated Krewe of Shangri-La Luncheon at Antoine's. It was awesome and so déjà vu. Saw many former Kings and Queens and old friends. Becky Allen, Marshall Harris and Jim Walpole entertained and of course they will be entertaining at my upcoming Round Table Luncheon on Wednesday, August 19 at Antoine's.
Photo of 2000 Shangri-La  King Andre de La Barre and Queen Margarita Bergen by Frank Stansbury at Antoine's

That evening i was invited to attend the Magnolia Cotillion at the lovely Ambush Mansion. All the Royalty of the upcoming Southern Decadence was present.

Sunday was a very busy day for me. I was invited to attend the Sushi Festival at the Lakefront Arena. I actually drove around the lakefront area and saw how it has recovered and changed since Katrina. I attended briefly the fun Bows and Beaus sponsored by the Junior Committee of the Women's Guild of the New Orleans Opera and local arts supporters at the Opera Guild Home.

Darlings, as part of getting old, it is not unusual to learn almost daily that one of my darling friends passed away. I just learned that Sandra Berry is in the arms of the Lord. I knew Sandra for long time and helped her establish her Neighborhood Gallery by providing her with limited edition framed Black art. My deepest condolences to Joshua, her brother Ronald Jones and her family and many friends.

Funeral arrangements are as follows:
Friday August 21, 2015-Celebration of the life for Ms. Sandra Berry Service held at First Grace United Methodist Church at12 noon at 3401 Canal Street
Funeral Procession Immediately following memorial service to Lake Lawn Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd.

Last night I was invited to attend the annual unveiling of the Saintsations Calendar at the Royal Sonesta. Throughout the years, I have developed a great respect and admiration for the Saintsations. They are not just beautiful but also very smart and well-educated. Congratulations.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152908038770870.1073742500.581200869&type=1&l=9e826ac62c

Darlings, this week I am anxiously looking forward to hosting my monthly Round table Luncheon on Wednesday, August 19 at noon at Antoine's. ROUND TABLE LUNCHEON TO FOCUS ON KATRINA 10TH ANNIVERSARY

With the upcoming tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and its devastating effects on New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, the monthly Round Table Luncheon hosted by Margarita Bergen will focus on the storm and the recovery efforts that have been made over the past decade.
The luncheon will be held at Antoine’s Restaurant, 713 St. Louis Street in the heart of the historic French Quarter, on Wednesday, August 19 at 12 noon. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will feature guest speakers on a variety of Katrina-related topics.
The featured speaker will be Sandy Rosenthal, founder of Levees.org and one of the most outspoken critics of the levee failures that led to the flooding of 80 percent of New Orleans and surrounding areas. Over the past ten years, she has been a vigorous leader in the fight for accountability from the agencies responsible for constructing and maintaining the floodwalls and levees, and she has also led the drive for establishing memorial parks at the major levee break sites.
Also featured will be author Jennifer Gremillion, a New Orleans native who documents her powerful true story of adversity, faith and survival in her new book, “Life Storms: Hurricane Katrina.” As the first book in Gremillion’s “Life Storms” series, the story is written from Jennifer’s unique perspective as a screenwriter – interspersed with scripts, thought-provoking questions and powerful reflections.
Author Mary Helen Lagasse will also be featured, discussing her second novel, “Navel of the Moon.” This earthy and moving coming-of-age tale is set in 1960s New Orleans but resides, as all good literature does, deep within the passionate mysteries of the human heart. With this new work, Mary Helen triumphantly surpasses the amazing promise of her debut novel, “The Fifth Sun.”
Gordon Wadge, President/CEO of the YMCA of Greater New Orleans will also address the group on what the Y is currently doing to improve the quality of life in post-Katrina New Orleans.
The entertainment will be by talented entertainers Becky Allen, Marshall Harris and pianist Jim Walpole.
Antoine's menu will include a Summer Salad, Trout Almondine with Brabant Potatoes and Baked Alaska. The price is $50 all inclusive, including champagne/wines.

While more than 15,500 animals were rescued during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it's estimated that 88,700 pets remained unaccounted for, according to the Louisiana Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. No one knows exactly how many animals died but most estimates put the number between 50,000 to 70,000 across the entire Gulf Coast.
In August, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will honor these animals with a community art display that gives back.  In observance of the 10th anniversary of Katrina, the Louisiana SPCA is asking New Orleans residents  to donate $10 toward in-need pets in the community. With every $10 donation, donors will be ableto hang a collar on the community art display. Each collar that is purchased will remain on display until after the grand opening of the Louisiana SPCA's expansion, the Adoption, Resource Center and Clinic, Aug. 21-23. After the grand opening, all of the donated collars honoring the animals affected by Katrina will be donated to pets-in-need around the Greater New Orleans area. The funds raised from the purchase of the collars will be used to microchip the thousands of animals that come to the Louisiana SPCA every year.
2015 is the Spay/Neuter Year!
There is still time to take advantage of the amazing deal we're offering to New Orleans pet owners. All year long, Orleans Parish residents can bring their pets to the Louisiana SPCA Community Clinic and receive their spay/neuter surgery for only $20.15! We're also offering $10 microchips with any spay/neuter surgery or wellness visit. Not an Orleans Parish resident? We have a variety of voucher programs that can reduce your spay/neuter costs! 2015 is the perfect year to make sure your pet is enjoying the benefits of being spayed or neutered.
