A Toast to New Orleans:June 2-9- Juleps in June/ Summer Wine Fest,June Under the Moon and more....

Darling friends, in case you are not getting my weekly blog " A Toast to New Orleans." Make sure you open the links - your photo maybe in one of them!

Darlings,

This past week was truly a culturally rich one as only New Orleans could offer.

For starters, I hosted on Wednesday,  the annual monthly Round Table Luncheon at the JW Marriott. As in the past, it was entertaining, informative and delicious. It previewed the upcoming FestiGals celebration that will take place in June 11-14, also at the JW. Marriott.

Put in your calendar that the next Round Table Luncheon will be on Wednesday, June 17 and will be a very special one since I am trying to recreate the very first Round Table Luncheon held 10 years ago. I have invited our first speaker, talented writer and humorist Verna Gates and Ms.  Claudia Baumgarten who is going to channel the one and only Dorothy Parker, in whose spirit the luncheons are held. I am only looking for the perfect venue since I am trying to go back to the old price of $25 for this particular time. So stay tuned and put it in your calendar.

On Thursday, I took advantage of the beautiful afternoon and right after working at Casell Bergen Gallery, I stopped by the Consulate of Mexico to see the opening of the art Exhibit "Dualidades" by talented Mexican artist Juan Pablo Hurtado

That night, another fun event that I enjoyed attending was the preview of the upcoming auction at The New Orleans Auction House's new location on Joseph Street, the former site of the Foundry. My darling friend, Mario Villa, had some of his personal collection on auction and it is always great to see my old-time friends. It was a delicious learning experience. Love drooling over the beautiful jewelry, furniture and art that was coming up for auction!

I was so happy that my friend Dean Shapiro invited to me to attend the awesome Final Gala Concert: “Souvenir of Florence” of the Birdfoot Festival at Dixon Hall at Tulane University. I was so thrilled to see talented international musicians share their passion and love with the audience. You could see it in their faces as they performed. I loved Tchaikovsky's “Souvenir of Florence” in mostly Allegro tempo.
Congratulations to the organizers, especially mother and daughter Tracey and Jenna Sherry, on a successful fourth annual Birdfoot Festival. Chamber music doesn’t come any better than that!https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152754263910870.1073742461.581200869&type=1&l=f3c43e2593
My congratulations, also, to Margaret Shields, outgoing president of New Orleans Friends of Music for helping to bring the best in chamber music to our city. She is stepping down on July 1 after three years of heading the organization andJonathan McCall will be taking over. Margaret will stay on as chair of FOM’s Education Committee and a member of their Board of Directors. I wish her well!
On Sunday, I enjoyed so much getting together with my old friends at the annual Sociedad Espanola's Paella at Juanita Pradel's lovely home on Pitt Street. Venezuela-born Chef Harold Angola did an awesome job cooking the delicious Paella. The salads, the flans and the decadent sangria made it to be the perfect accompaniment to the delicious Paella,https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152755424240870.1073742462.581200869&type=1&l=65ea519cda
I concluded my week by running between rain drops to attend that evening, the always fun Beauregard-Keyes  Historic House  Sunset  Spring Gala that benefits The Beauregard-Keyes House and Garden Museum. Guests feasted on a buffet and were entertained by Deacon John and the Ivories.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152756182745870.1073742463.581200869&type=1&l=16e7eca4ed

The Beauregard-Keyes House and Garden Museum, at 1113 Chartres St., is a historic house museum operated by the Keyes Foundation, and their mission works for the preservation and maintenance of the historic Beauregard-Keyes House through educational programs and guided tours.

The New Orleans Film Society and the Prytania Theatre are pleased to present the 6th annual filmOrama, a spring showcase of contemporary and classic cinema, taking place at the Prytania Theatre until June 4. The seven-day festival features 19 feature films, 10 of which are Louisiana premieres, including festival favorites like “The Wolfpack” and “Kumiko the Treasure Hunter,” as well as restored classics like “Grey Gardens” and “Rebels of the Neon God.” Among this year’s attendees will be Laura Coxson, producer of the new documentary “Iris” (which was directed by the late Albert Maysles), and also Beth Harrington, director of the documentary “The Winding Stream,” about the legendary Carter and Cash musical families.

Wednesday at Lafayette Square is presenting, on June 3, George Porter Jr. and The Runnin Pardners Pocket Aces Brass Band from 5-8 p.m.
On Wednesday, June 3,  my darling friends Jacques and Claire Creppel, owners of The Column Hotel are celebrating its 100th Anniversary at Open house  from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 3811 St. Charles Avenue. Congratulations!

Darlings as you know, June is a beautiful month at City Park with flowers blooming and ducks quacking. The park is alive every Thursday with The Sound of Music since The Botanical Garden Thursdays at Twilight music series continues this month! Here is the lineup for June:

On the evening of Wednesday, June 3, I will be attending the local premiere of Kate Bailey’s new play, “Strays” at the newly renovated Marigny Theater just up the street from where I live at Marigny Street and St. Claude Avenue. The theater is now under the management of my darling friend, Jim Fitzmorris and his brother Ryan Fitzmorris and this is the first production to be staged there since they signed their management contract. I can’t wait to see how it looks now.

“Strays” run on weekends through June 14 and features an all-local cast of Duncan Becker, Natalie Jones, Eli Timm, AshleyRose Bailey, Chris Marroy, Jon Broder and Monica Harris. As the playwright describes it, “In this piece, we examine how regret can force a group of old friends to cling desperately to each other, the death of their past friend haunting their present. Grief and missed opportunities collide in an emotional discovery of how fleeting time is for us all.” Directed by Jen Davis. Show times are 7:30 p.m.
Darlings, as my darling friend Jon Kemp, Vieux Carre Columnist wrote in her column" The lazy, crazy days of summer are here. Their arrival heralds the overture to the social season in New Orleans, Juleps in June, on  Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m. When the weather presses on us like a hot iron, it's time for summer cocktail frocks, ice cream suits and mint juleps.
Guests attending the Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society fundraiser will lift their glasses high to toast the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, William Faulkner, and all writers -- past, present and those yet to come.
This year, Juleps in June returns to the sumptuous Audubon Place residence of honorary chairs Tia and James Roddy.
"One of the best Juleps parties was at the Roddy residence, and we are thrilled that we are able to return for 2015's event," said co-founder Rosemary James.
Many non-profits are focusing on at-risk teenagers and adults, as is the Faulkner Society, which will partner with One Book, One New Orleans to promote literacy programs. The society also promotes advice events for developing writers and literary programming for readers.
As a special Juleps treat, three authors will sign copies of their new books. Brian Boyles latest is titled "New Orleans Boom and Blackout: 100 Days in America's Coolest Hot Spot," which looks at explosive city development.
Art collector, designer, and dermatologist Dr. Nia Terezaki's will be honored for "Artful Feast," a reference book for the creative life, along with Patty Friedmann, whose wacky Southern drama, "Do Not Open for 50 Years," is the entertaining end to her Cooper family trilogy.

On Saturday, June 6, I am looking forward to the annual 2015 Summer Wine Fest, benefitting the French-American Chamber of Commerce, Gulf Coast. It's a celebration of wines with "six" appeal and summer love. Come join the fun dressed in your best 1960's attire. The date, time and place is Saturday, June 6, from 7:30-11:00 p.m. at The Shops at Canal Place, 333 Canal Street.

On Saturday, June 6, internationally renowned timple musician and composer Benito Cabrera will perform an exquisite repertoire of Canarian folk music and modern compositions inspired by traditional folk music of the Canary Islands at 7:00 pm in the Cultural Arts Building of Chalmette High School, 2600 Palmisano Boulevard, Chalmette. The facility features state-of-the-art equipment and magnificent acoustics. Cabrera last visited and performed in St. Bernard and the metropolitan New Orleans area in 2007. He will be accompanied by a guitarist.
The signature musical instrument of Canarian folk music is the timple, best described as a five-stringed small guitar. Its history is traceable to the 15th century. The sound of the timple is very melodic and is an inextricable part of the traditional song and dance music of the Canaries. The concert is free and open to the public. The program is sponsored by the Autonomous Government of the Canary Islands and Los Islenos Heritage and Cultural Society. For additional information, please call Rhonda Hannan at (504) 615-9322 or correspond with Los Islenos Society at www.losislenos2011@gmail.com.

FRENCH MARKET SECOND ANNUAL SUMMER HARVEST GALA
KICKS OFF THE CREOLE TOMATO FESTIVAL & SUPPORTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW FARMERS MARKETS

The historic French Market transforms into an elegant dinner setting on Wednesday, June 10th, whenJustin Devillier, Executive Chef of La Petite Grocery and Balise, and a team of award-winning chefs including Slade Rushing, Executive Chef Brennan’s; Vishwesh Bhatt, Executive Chef of City Grocery Restaurant Group (Oxford, MS); Rebecca Wilcomb, Chef de Cuisine of Herbsaint; andKristen Essig, Executive Chef of Meauxbar, come together to prepare a family-style dinner reflecting fresh local, seasonal food.

A cocktail reception featuring handcrafted cocktails by Cane & Table will begin the evening, featuring handcrafted vodkas by Cathead Vodka.

“This special evening signifies the return of fresh food to the French Market, and celebrates the culinary treasures that the French Market represents.  By bringing together some of the city’s top chefs to enjoy an evening in our pavilion, we celebrate the unique summer offerings of Southern Louisiana, and honor our food heritage at one of the country’s most significant food halls,” said French Market Corporation Executive Director Jon Smith.

Under Smith’s tenure, the French Market has brought two weekly farmers markets to the French Market:  A Wednesday Crescent City Farmers Market that began in October 2014, and a Saturday morning French Market operated farmers market that started in March 2015.  Both markets continue to evolve and are shaped by the unique local and visitor traffic to the French Market.

“Our markets offer a variety of both fresh produce, seafood and baked goods, as well as freshly made ‘grab and go’ items that tourists appreciate. We serve a constant and unique daily stream of mixed local and visitor traffic, and we continue to shape our markets based on these diverse needs.  The funds from the Summer Harvest Gala will support the development of the current and future farmers markets at the French Market,” noted Smith.

The evening’s schedule is as follows:

6:30 – 7:30 P.M. | Cane & Table cocktail reception
7:30 – 10:00 P.M. | Sit-down dinner under the French Market pavilion featuring live music by Creole String Beans
