A Toast to New Orleans:Oct. 14-20:Round Table Luncheon/ PINK GALA/O What a Night and more‏

Darlings,
If there is ever a week that I feel exhausted, I must confess it was this past week.
My social whirl started on Tuesday when I attended the lovely gathering of the French Quarter Business Association at Broussard's beautiful courtyard. That was the opening of one of my favorite Broadway plays, “Chicago” at the Saenger. I loved it and got to meet the fabulous stars.
On Wednesday, with a beautiful full moon shining upon New Orleans, I attended several fun parties. The first one was a lovely party at the Latrobe House on Royal Street in honor of my darling friend John Young who is a candidate for Lieutenant Governor. Also present was my old-time customer, Judge Paul Sens, who is running for judge again.
The members of the Host Committee were Samara Poche and Eddie SelbyLeslie Perrin and Chuck RansdellMichael Wilkinson and Robin Wilkinson.

My next soiree was at the lovely Columns Hotel. It was in honor of the visit of Russian ballerina Valentina Kozlova. Ms. Kozlova was visiting New Orleans in preparation for the historic First New Orleans Semi-Final of the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition which will take place in New Orleans at the end of February and the first day of March in Loyola's Roussel Hall.

The competition is already five years old and my darling friend, Olga Smoak, has been a juror from the beginning. It is a very serious competition and in the past the finals have attracted competitors from about 35 countries. Born August 26, 1957, Valentina is a Soviet-born Russian- American ballerina and founder of Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition. In 1979, while on tour as a young principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet, Kozlova defected to the United States where she became a principal dancer with New York City Ballet and later, opened her own ballet school.
My last fun event was Cafe Istanbul in the Marigny which was the setting for the opening of Que Pasa Fest. It featured the presentation of the official poster by Colombian artist Mario Padilla and art exhibits by Padilla and other New Orleans Latino artists Jackie Cerise of Puerto Rico, Ana Hernandez of Mexico, Piky Mendizabal of Cuba, Javier Rodriguez of Honduras and Belinda Shinshillas of Mexico were featured.
Mexican dancer Javier Juarez, owner and artistic Director of Javier's Dance Studio in Slidell,  received the Guillermo De Bango Excellence in the Arts award.
Darlings, dressed as Carmen - a la Margarita, I attended the kickoff of the 2014-2015 opera season at the Mahalia Jackson Center for the Performing Arts. The glittering festivities commenced with cocktails around the Norman Treigle Fountain followed by the Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group serving an exquisite themed dinner on the second mezzanine of the Mahalia Jackson Theater.
The dinner was delicious and the glittering festivities were dedicated to three Grande Dames whose immeasurable contributions to opera in New Orleans were fully deserving of the special recognition planned. The New Orleans Opera Association honored the memories ofBetty Noe and Lois Hawkins and the vibrancy of Betty Brooks Doss and acknowledged their generosity and their consummate impact on the region's opera community. The opera was fabulous and I was so happy to see my darling friend, baritone Ivan Griffin, who was cast as dashing Zuniga.

On Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12, the Hispanic American Musicians and Artists Cultural Association (H.A.M.A.C.A.) proudly presented their 15th annual weekend-long FREE festival, Carnaval Latino and this year it was held almost outside Casell-Bergen Gallery at the French Market.

On Saturday it was time to participate as the first local Queen of Carnaval Latino in the fun-filled Desfile de las America. It was really lovely.

That evening I was invited to attend the annual Halloween Bash hosted by Brett Bauman and Cheryl Mintz at their spectacular spooky decorated home. The theme was Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
I ended my week at the festivities of the Carnaval Latino at the French Market. (I hope you will enjoy the links and photos and links at the end of the blog}
Darlings, during the next couple of months, my social life will be very hectic and this week is going to be one of those.

This year’s National Night Out is scheduled for Tuesday, October 14.  The official kick-off party will be at Federal City in Algiers starting at 5:30 p.m.

Royal Sonesta's Round Table Luncheon
It’s Louisiana on Tap
The Royal Sonesta is brewing up a good time for October’s Round Table Luncheon! The event will celebrate the burgeoning craft beer industry in Louisiana as we imbibe and indulge in some of the best beers that the region has to offer. In honor of Oktoberfest, we’re opening the taps and letting the good times flow as we get the scoop on the area’s brewery scene.
We’ll hear from beer expert and writer Nora McGunnigle who will share her extensive knowledge about Louisiana’s craft beer scene. McGunnigle specializes in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Gulf Coast region. McGunnigle’s work has appeared in an impressive array of local, regional, and national publications.
CEO and founder of NOLA Brewing Company, Kirk Coco, will speak about the role he’s had in bringing craft brewing back to the city in post-Katrina New Orleans. Coco has been an integral part of the resurgence of local brewing and has tied both the company’s brand and its beers to the unique character and distinct resilience of the city.
Karlos Knott, President and Co-founder of Bayou Teche Brewing Company, will take us inside his experience of founding a brewery that not only crafts some of the best beers in Louisiana, but also utilizes its product to preserve and celebrate the distinct culture, language, music, and cuisine of Acadiana where he was raised.
Entertainment will be provided by the Jefferson Performing Arts Society featuring vocalists Jennifer DeLatte, Kat Abreo Mendelson, and Micah Desonier. The trio will perform selections from the upcoming Pasta and Puccini Gala and will be accompanied by Dr. Donna Clavijo on piano.
As a special musical treat, guests will enjoy a performance by Grammy artist Louis Michot. A gifted fiddler for the Cajun rock band Lost Bayou Ramblers, Michot has traveled the country and the world extensively spreading Cajun music. Michot’s performance underscores our celebration of Louisiana’s unique approach to this Oktoberfest celebration.
Executive Chef Kevin Goodwin and his expert culinary team have prepared an Oktoberfest four-course menu just for the occasion. NOLA Brewing Company and Bayou Teche Brewing have selected beer pairings to compliment each course. The meal begins with a German Style Beer Cheese Soup featuring Bayou Teche Biere Pale with Jarlsberg Cheese and Garlic Croutons. Next, guests will enjoy a salad of Hogs Head Cheese and Baby Greens with White Wine Vinegar and Sour Cream Dressing. The main course will be a lovely duet of Bay Snapper Schnitzel in a Lemon Caper Butter Sauce and Duck Confit with Currants and an Alps Blueberry Glaze, served with Crisp Buttered Spaetzle and Port Wine Pickled Red Cabbage. For a sweet finish, guests will enjoy Hopitoulas Chocolate Hops Cake with Plum Ice Cream for dessert.
It’s worth noting that the site of the Royal Sonesta New Orleans was once home to the American Brewing Company, makers of the popular Regal Beer, from 1890 until 1962. After Prohibition, the American Brewing Company was unique in its ability to recover and prosper as a local brewery. October’s Round Table is a nod to the hotel’s history and a celebration of the similar post-Katrina comeback that the craft brewing scene has enjoyed in recent years. We’ll be raising our glasses to the future of brew masters in this region!
Remember, October is also the month of Halloween! We’d be remiss if we didn’t celebrate the season in a distinctly New Orleans fashion, so help us celebrate by donning your favorite accessories to further enhance the flavor of this Round Table!
The Royal Sonesta’s Round Table Luncheon is $50 inclusive with advance reservations or $55 at the door. Parking is complimentary in the hotel’s parking garage. For reservations, please contact Noel Scallan at 504-553-2220 or email her at nscallan@sonesta.com

RECEPTION TO MEET ARTIST ALI GOLKAR
 Martin Lawrence Gallery,
433 Royal Street (near St. Louis Street)

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Exhibit runs through the end of October RSVP (504) 299-9055 WWW.MARTINLAWRENCE.COM
DETAILS:
The public is cordially invited to celebrate the art of Ali Golkar. Join us for a special evening with the artist as we learn about his latest works. Refreshments will be served and entertainment will be provided by The Yisrael Trio. The artist will be available to sign new acquisitions of his work during the evening.
Born in 1948 in the historic city of Isfahan, Persia, Ali Golkar brings a rich history and culture to his unique imagery. Educated in Persia through 1972 in the fine arts and architecture, the artist moved to the United States and in 1974 continued his studies at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Steeped in the cultures of Europe and the Orient, Ali Golkar explores the depth of his cultural heritage and life experiences through his artwork.
Love, beauty, music, and poetry are portrayed with both grace and a joy of life seldom encountered in contemporary art. Greek mythology is supplanted by Renaissance mythology, which in turn is fused with the expressionism of 20th century French humanistic paintings. Golkar wraps his artistic statements in bold colors blending themes of everyday life with spirituality and dreams.
For well over 25 years, Golkar artwork has been well received in Europe, Asia and the United States. Recent exhibitions include gall
