A Toast to NO: OCT 13-20- Night Against Crime/ Round Table Luncheon/ Pasta and Puccini and more....

Darlings,

Last week was a very hectic week in which I was going from one cultural event to another but, as you know, I do not know any different.

I was invited by the Mexican Consulate to attend the closing ceremony of the Exhibition "Hispanic Convergence" at the Art Gallery of the Consulate of Mexico. It was well attended and the Consulate of Mexico, in cooperation with the Cafe Reconcile and Que Pasa, showcased live Music by Patrice Fisher, Carlos Valladares and Alexis “Papo” Guevara

The event also marked the opening of "Que Pasa Fest 2015" and the presentation of the “Cervantes-Guillermo De Bango, Excellence in the Arts” awarded to Brenda Murphy of Jambalaya News by the Cervantes Hispanic-American Arts Foundation.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152999469110870.1073742534.581200869&type=1&l=7c1488940c

I went back next day to a fabulous Tequila Tasting and the Latin Cuisine from Superior Grill at the Mexican Consulate’s art gallery. The tequilas "Tears of Llorona" and "T1" were delicious and so was the food.

On Thursday, I rushed to the annual Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA) Carnival's Patron's party at the lovely residence of the Flowers on Calhoun Street. The Carnival took place on Friday at City Park's Carousel Gardens.

The highlight of my week was the New Orleans Opera Association's Opening Night Celebration at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. Just as expected, it was spectacular. I joined in the festivities on Friday, October 9 before the curtain rose on the season-opening performance of “La Traviata.” The evening began with cocktails at the Norman Treigle Fountain followed by the Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group serving an exquisite themed dinner on the mezzanine of the theater, complete with camellias and French touches in décor and entertainment. Following the feast, we walked the red carpet and enjoyed Verdi’s epic romantic opera.
As I mentioned to you last week, this is Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, and as such we had in New Orleans not one but two festivals celebrating all aspects of Hispanic culture – from the food to the music and everything in between. On Saturday, after work, I enjoyed participating in the annual Desfile de las America Parade. I rode with my darling Duchess Chiquita in a beautiful white convertible, courtesy of Vic Planetta of VIP Limousines. It was so much fun and  I was proud to of my Hispanic Heritage.

I left after the parade to attend the First Annual Taste of Italy, which was delicious and very entertaining. The magnificent Piazza d'Italia was the setting for this fabulous event that featured Italian delicacies from over 20 different restaurants. Guests danced the night away to the tunes of my favorite group, The YAT Pack, while sipping a fine Italian wine or libation. I loved diving into and learning about the local Italian culture with a walk through the American Italian Museum and viewing the works of famous Italian artists. I ended my cultural activities on Sunday when I participated as one of the "Stars" at the annual Parkway Partners' Feast with the Stars at Gallier Hall. The brunch featured food from local restaurants, jazz and a performance by The Pussyfooters. Proceeds support Parkway Partners' tree-planting projects and school gardens. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153008276895870.1073742538.581200869&type=1&l=50dc57b567

Darlings, every morning when I look at the obituaries I start to cry in disbelief that another one of my friends has died. Last week, I lost not one - but three - darling old-time friends. The first one was restaurateur Joe Segretohttp://www.nola.com/dining/index.ssf/2015/10/joe_segreto_dies.html, followed by internationally renowned super chef Paul Prudhomme  http://www.nola.com/dining/index.ssf/2015/10/paul_prudhomme_dies.html and Donald Wood Sr. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/theneworleansadvocate/obituary.aspx?donald-w-wood&pid=176080464&fhid=5630. God bless them all for the joy they brought into our lives.

This upcoming week is going to be another social marathon since Tuesday, October 13 is the the 32nd Annual National Night Out Against Crime.

The National Night Out Against Crime in New Orleans is a community-wide event to raise crime prevention awareness, reduce crime and increase the support of local, state and federal law enforcement. It began 32 years ago with NOPD officer.

Join Superintendent Michael Harrison, elected officials, police officers, Q93 FM personality Wild Wayne and your fellow citizens for the kick-off party at St. Roch Park.

On Wednesday, October 14,  I am looking forward to hosting the October Round Table Luncheon as we salutes the Jefferson Performing Arts Society and Hispanic Heritage at noon at Antoine’s Restaurant in the heart of the French Quarter.

The international cast of tenors and sopranos for the upcoming JPAS Pasta and Puccini fundraiser will the featured entertainers at the luncheon. Talented tenor Juan Carlos Valls from Uruguay who sings the role of the Duke of Mantua in the upcoming production of JPAS’ “Rigoletto” will join Maestro Dennis Assaf and other members of the cast in performing a selection of songs from the popular Verdi opera. Don’t be surprised if you hear “Le Donna e Mobile.” You may not know the name of this very famous aria but you will definitely recognize it when you hear it.
They will be joined by featured speaker Mayra Pineda, Executive Director of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana for a very brief overview of the Hispanic Community and its growth. The $50 all-inclusive price includes a 3-course Fall Salad, followed by a stuffed pork dish, with a Champagne Sauce over Yukon Gold seasoned potatoes and baked Alaska for dessert with wines and champagne.

Complimentary parking will once again be provided the night of the Gala by Roger Ogden, Darryl & Louellen Berger and The Garage at Canal Place. The Gala attracts approximately 1,200 guests each year on average. Suggested dress: Business/Cocktail.
Thursday, October 15 through Sunday, October 18 is the Charity Shopping Weekend.
Key to the Cure 2015 is a four-day charity shopping weekend – Thursday, October 15-Sunday, October 18 – during which 2 percent of sales at Saks Fifth Avenue New Orleans will be donated to the cancer research programs of the Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium.
Over the past 14 years, Saks Stores nationwide have raised over $34 million for cancer charities through Key to the Cure. The New Orleans event has generated $1,550,000 locally, every penny of which went into cancer research here at home.
Darlings, I am getting all excited about the upcoming New Orleans Film Festival that begins this week. Hosted by the New Orleans Film Societythe 2015 NOFF is being held from October 14-22 in several venues throughout New Orleans.
Over the years the festival has provided an opportunity for new and established filmmakers to premiere their latest works. These works most often include full-length features, shorts, documentaries and animation, as well as music videos. The festival kicks off Wednesday, October 14, at the newly-restored Orpheum Theater in downtown New Orleans, and will continue at multiple other venues, like the Prytania TheaterJoy TheaterTheaters at Canal Place and more.
The event will feature 173 selections from NOFF’s open call for submissions from independent filmmakers, in addition to more than one dozen additional films that have acquired distribution. In addition to the esteemed film screenings, the festival also presents a series of mentor sessions, workshops, and panel discussions featuring industry leaders. These, too, are open to the general public.
Others soirees that I am looking to attending are on Friday, October 16. Pasta & Puccini, the Jefferson Performing Arts Society fundraiser, features opera, food and more at the brand new Jefferson Performing Arts Center at 6400 Airline Drive, Metairie. Call (504) 885-2000 for information or go to their website, www.jpas.org.
And would you believe on the same night there’s Magic in the Moonlight. The gala features an outdoor dinner with food by Susan Spicer and music by the Leroy Jones Quintet. Proceeds go toward construction of the New Orleans Botanical Gardens’ new arrival garden.
The Gala is at the New Orleans Botanical Gardens on Victory Avenue in City Park. For more information go towww.magicinthemoonlightnola.com.
