On Friday, The Pink Gala hosted by Mario Muro, publisher of New Orleans Living, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month at The Eiffel Society was a lot of fun. That evening, I was invited to Le Petit Théâtre Du Vieux Carré Theatre's production of “Our Town.” Written by Thornton Wilder and directed by Maxwell Williams, it was delightful. Newly appointed as Le Petit’s Artistic Director, Mr. Williams made his New Orleans theatre debut directing Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece. It will run until October 18. On Saturday, I missed completely Art for Arts’ Sake but it is not every day that my darling friend, Hon. Jimmy Coleman, Honorary Consul of England receives the WTC's Eugene J. Schreiber Award. The ceremony took place at the National World War II Museum, so I had to stop there for a few minutes before heading to Antoine's for its 175th Anniversary Gala.
Darlings, the 175th Anniversary of Antoine's Restaurant Gala was one soiree that I am going to remember for a long time. The Gala was a wonderful night of delicious French-Creole cuisine, Prohibition-inspired libations, faux gambling, live jazz music from the Jimmy Maxwell Orchestra and pianist/vocalist Giselle Bonfaire, a 'secret' speakeasy room, a champagne and wine lounge and a dessert parlor. A portion of the proceeds will be benefiting The Historic New Orleans Collection.nhttps://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152996238350870.1073742529.581200869&type=1&l=adbbdf5ee4
I loved every bit of JPAS's production of “My Fair Lady.” This was my first time in the magnificent facilities of the new Jefferson Performing Arts Center and I was impressed. Congratulations to indefatigable Maestro Dennis Assaf and the cast. If I am not mistaken I was fortunate to have seen Tony Award-winner Sir Reginald Carey "Rex" Harrison when he performed in New Orleans in the revival production of “My Fair Lady,” so I was impressed and delighted to enjoy so much the cast of the production by JPAS. I cannot wait to see the cast of the opera, “Rigoletto,” performing at my upcoming Round Table Luncheon on October 14 at Antoine's. Not to be missed..https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152998633515870.1073742533.581200869&type=1&l=96c676050a
On Sunday, the beautiful Garden Lane residence of Bill and Susan Hess next to Longue Vue House and Gardens could not have been more appropriate for the very interesting and informative brunch with speaker Bob Becker, CEO of City Park. He discussed, in his talk, “Resilience under the Oaks: The Past, Present and Future of City Park” The brunch was sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, Greater New Orleans Section..https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152998606375870.1073742530.581200869&type=1&l=4743fa7ed6
Thanks God, the week ended in a very critical victory for our beloved Saints. As he has done so often in the past, Drew Brees iced the opposition with a long touchdown pass; this one for 81 yards on the first drive in overtime.
This week, before I share all the upcoming fun cultural events, I want to express my condolences to the relatives of four pillars of my beloved New Orleans community. The first two are former writer and producer of ABC News, Steve Steinberg, and talented photographer Syndey Byrd, who photographed me several times at different balls. If you've attended a Mardi Gras Indian parade, Carnival parade or ball, you've seen Syndey in her long, colorful dresses with her cameras clicking away. Another loss was that of my old-time friend Russell Carll, beloved husband of Angela Carll, Realtor Journalist. And, not to be overlooked because he was from Gretna and not New Orleans proper, is Rock & Roll icon Frankie Ford. Wherever Frankie went – and he traveled very widely for many years – he always represented New Orleans, the city where he played countless Bourbon Street gigs and JazzFest appearances. All four of these wonderful people will be sorely missed: RIP
I am looking forward to this week because on Friday, is the New Orleans Opera Association's Opening Night Celebration at Mahalia Jackson Theatre. My darling friend Timothy Todd Simmons invited me to be his guest and I will join in the festivities on Friday, October 9 before the curtain rises on the season-opening performance of “La Traviata.” The evening will begin with cocktails at the Norman Treigle Fountain followed by the Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group serving an exquisite themed dinner on the second mezzanine of the Mahalia Jackson Theatre, complete with camellias and French touches in décor and entertainment. Following the feast, we will walk the red carpet and enjoy Verdi’s epic romantic opera. It promises to be a night to remember!
The night before that, on Thursday, Oct. 8, the New Orleans Volunteer Orchestra (NOVO) and the Voices of New Orleans (VONO) choir will be giving a free concert at the St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church (corner of St. Charles and Broadway, Uptown). Energetic, 24 year old Maestro Chris Bergeron will conduct the 60-member orchestra and 40-plus-member chorus in an eclectic mix of popular songs and classical compositions.
The selections will range from Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” and Orff’s “Carmina Burana” to music from “Lord of the Rings” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It promises to be a very fun, entertaining evening and, I repeat once again: IT’S FREE! (Donations strongly encouraged, though, in order to keep their concerts free.) Read more about it in Thursday’s New Orleans Advocate, posted Wednesday night.
Darlings, in case you did not know we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, the festival celebrates all aspects of Hispanic culture – from the food to the music and everything in between.
As such, New Orleans will not have one but two festivals this weekend. The first one will be Que Pasa Fest. The six-day October festival that celebrates Hispanic culture and heritage in New Orleans, will turn the spotlight of its 2015 events on Cuba, featuring Cuban artists – musicians, filmmakers, visual artists and more – living in New Orleans.
Festival events kicked off Monday, Oct. 5, at the New Orleans Mexican consulate https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152999469110870.1073742534.581200869&type=1&l=7c1488940c
and finishes up Saturday, Oct. 10, with a free, all-day outdoor festival at the Al Copeland meadow concert area in Lafreniere Park in Metairie. More free events, to take place throughout the week, will be announced, organizers said.
Confirmed to participate so far is visual artist Piky Mendizabal, Latin jazz percussionist Alexey Marti, Cuban classical guitarist Javier Alondo and his group AsheSon, filmmaker William Sabourin and curator and ethnologist Tomas Montoya.
On Saturday, I am looking forward to celebrating my Hispanic Heritage at Carnaval Latino 2015 and Desfile de las Americas October 10-11. This will be the third year of the Parade of the Americas, or “Desfile de las Americas.” The parade will take place on Saturday, October 10 at 6:00 p.m. and I am going to be riding a beautiful convertible, courtesy of Vic Planetta of VIP Limousines.
The floats and marching groups will form on the Convention Center Boulevard and flow through the Warehouse District. It will turn left at Canal Street to South Peters Street where it will turn right, flowing along North Peters Street to the Carnaval site by the Flea Market where the weekend festivities will take place,
Darlings, on Saturday, after parading in the Carnaval Latino Parade, I will be joining the American Italian Cultural Center and Piazza d'Italia, New Orleans, LA for A TASTE OF ITALY at American Italian Cultural Center ,537 South Peters Street to celebrate Italian heritage month with the Italian food, music and culture of our vibrant city . It will be Saturday, October 10, 2015 from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM .
Dine on Italian delicacies from over 20 different restaurants. Dance the night away in the Piazza d'Italia to classic Italian songs while sipping a fine Italian wine or libation. Dive into the local Italian culture with a walk through the American Italian Museum and view the works of famous Italian artists. Viva Italy!
I will conclude my week on Sunday, October 11 by participating in the annual Parkway Partners' Feast with the Stars. The brunch features food from local restaurants, jazz and a performance by the Pussyfooters. Proceeds support Parkway Partners' tree-planting projects and school gardens. The event takes place in Gallier Hall, 545 St. Charles Ave.; www.parkwaypartnersnola.org

The floats and marching groups will form on the Convention Center Boulevard and flow through the Warehouse District. It will turn left at Canal Street to South Peters Street where it will turn right, flowing along North Peters Street to the Carnaval site by the Flea Market where the weekend festivities will take place,
