Darlings,
Mother Nature blessed the last week of the New Orleans Jazz Fest with glorious spring weather to the delight of thousands of out-of-town visitors and locals alike.
Fortunately, this weekend was also the fabulous outdoor Zoo-to-Do. Once again the 38th Whitney Zoo-To-Do at the Audubon Zoo was one memorable affair. I have been going to the event for at least 35 years and I have learned, based on my past experiences, to stick to one drink and in my case it is champagne so I survived the evening in one piece. The setting, the libations, the food and the beautifully dressed males and females made a very special evening!

Last week, I was sad to see the end of the NOLA Navy Week. I hated to see those handsome, brave sailors and officers leave New Orleans. Before they left, I had so much fun at the NOLA Navy Week's Culinary Cook-Off. While there I stopped at the beautiful Riverwalk and experienced the Neiman Marcus Last Call and Chico. I bought a lovely dress that I wore to the Zoo-to-Do! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152677923420870.1073742443.581200869&type=1&l=0bfafe1093
I also enjoyed attending the inspiring annual Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse for Greater New Orleans (CADA) Luncheon Annual 18th Awards Luncheon, at Harrah's Hotel, in the Vieux Carre Ballroom. The keynote address was by U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite Jr. and awards were presented to Ginger Parsons, LCSW_BACS; Lacey Wilson, CAC; Hon. Calvin Johnson, Natasha Robin, James Logan and Alice Holloway, CADA Fiscal Officer.
Darlings, in case you did not know, the Travelocity Roaming Gnome visited New Orleans last week and locals were invited to “Show Him New Orleans.” And, given his mission to "Go and Smell the Roses" and his penchant for adventure, Duchess Chiquita Linda and I had the opportunity to meet him and for me to share my love for my adopted city. We were invited to join him at the fabulous House on Broel on St. Charles Avenue. Hostess Bonnie Broel showed us her exquisite mansion, her miniature Doll House Museum, and her Wedding Chapel. We loved it.
I ended my week by going for few hours to the N.O. Jazz Festival. I love to see my artist friends, listen to the musical performers and eat the cracklings. Fortunately, I was invited to Mayor Landrieu's tent by Congo Square and stopped by the Acura VIP Tent. I had a great time.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152690150835870.1073742445.581200869&type=1&l=35248e0207
Since GiveNOLA Day falls on Cinco De Mayo this year, the public is invited to a GiveNOLA Day Fiesta with music and entertainment at Lafayette Square between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Come watch the leaderboard as millions of dollars are raised; give to your favorite charity at the Donation Station powered by Entergy; and enjoy Mexican food from Juan’s Flying Burrito benefitting GiveNOLA Day. In case you are wondering: What is GiveNOLA Day?
Hosted on Tuesday, May 5 by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, GiveNOLA Day is the community’s one-day, online giving event to inspire people to give generously to the nonprofit organizations that make our region a stronger and more thriving community for all. It’s our day to come together as one! Every dollar donated from midnight to midnight on May 5 will be increased with additional “lagniappe” dollars provided by the Greater New Orleans Foundation and our generous GiveNOLA Day sponsors. Last year, we raised $2.25 million dollars from 19,000+ donors around the nation. This year, our goals are to raise $3 million from 25,000+ donors! GIVE, GIVE ,GIVE and you will be rewarded - it all for a great cause!
On Wednesday, May 6 at Lafayette Square, Earphunk + Meschiya Lake will be performing.
On Thursday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Al Copeland Concert Meadow Stage in Lafreniere Park, 3000 Downs Blvd. in Metairie, The Lafreniere Live! Spring Concert Series is presenting the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
That same night, my darling friend, talented jazz pianist, Ronnie Kole, will be performing at Thursday at Twilight at the Pavilion of the Two Sisters, New Orleans Botanical Garden, City Park.
That night is also Jazz in the Park with Tank and the Bangas and the Preservation Hall Brass Band.
On Friday, May 8, I am looking forward to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art's Sippin' in Seersucker 2015 - a sartorial soiree kicking off the summer social season! From 6-9 p.m. at the Shops at Canal Place. CHAMPAGNE STROLL ON MAGAZINE- IS THE PERFECT WAY TO SHOP AND RELAX
What can be more relaxing than a stroll down Magazine Street with a glass of champagne in your hand on a cool spring evening? All the stores on Magazine Street are open extended hours from 6-9 p.m. for the event. Razzle Dazzle Home will have lots of new merchandise to browse. On Saturday, May 9, The Limón Dance Company kicks off its 70th anniversary season in New Orleans and begins a year-long celebration honoring the incredible legacy of founder and American modern dance icon, José Limón. The performance will be at the Mahalia Jackson Theater at 8 p.m.
In tribute, this gorgeous company brings a brilliant program, including “Mazurkas,” a poetic suite of dances set to Chopin, and Limón's signature piece, “The Moor's Pavane,” considered to be "one of the greatest works of 20th century modern dance" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). For the grand finale, the New Orleans Ballet Association sponsors the monumental revival of the “profoundly stirring” (Dance Magazine) masterpiece “Missa Brevis.” With an exuberant score by Hungarian composer, Zoltán Kodály, this revival features a local 40-member chorus, organist and dancers selected from the NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance.
Limón Dance Company Artistic Director Carla Maxwell will give a pre-performance talk at 7:15 p.m. on the theater’s Mezzanine Level (M2) and it is free to all ticketholders. Carla will also answer questions from the audience after her talk. She has been the company’s A.D. since 1978 and worked under Jose Limon for the last seven years of his life. You can read more about her and the upcoming performance in Dean Shapiro’s article in the New Orleans Advocate’s Thursday, May 7 BEAUCOUP magazine pullout (also posted online on Wednesday evening).
I am looking forward to this performance, the last one of the NOBA season.

On Sunday, May 10, it wouldn't be Mother's Day in New Orleans without the annual performance by Irma Thomas at Audubon Zoo. The Grammy Award winner will be in her customary spot on the Capital One stage in Audubon Zoo, where she has headlined the Mother Day's Celebration for more than three decades.
Audubon Nature Institute members and all moms get in free for the full day of food, music and family fun that begins at 10 a.m.
Also on Sunday, May 10 at 5 p.m. sopranos Valerie & Imanni Jones Francis and pianist Wilfred Delpin, in a varied program of classical, opera, art songs and spirituals will be the featured performers at the Trinity Artist Series at Trinity Church.
