Darlings,
I hope you had a lovely Mother's Day in the company of your loved ones. The memories of my beloved mother, Consuelo Bergen, will always be treasured. May her soul rest in peace.
On Mother's Day we were blessed to have, not just one, but two great Mother's Day concerts. The first one at the Audubon Zoo featured the legendary Queen of Soul Irma Thomas. And later, at 4 p.m., the Vieux Carre Property Owners Association once again hosted the lovely Mothers' Day Concert in Cabrini Park in the French Quarter. It featured The New Leviathan Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra to the delight of the many mothers who enjoyed the picnic atmosphere.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152700786925870.1073742447.581200869&type=1&l=bf4d1cdc69
On Friday, I donned my seersucker suit and enjoyed the annual Sippin' in Seersucker 2015, the sartorial soiree kicking off the summer social season at the Shops at Canal Place to benefit Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The delicious cuisine, the decadent libations, the melodic sounds of my darling friend Robin Barnes, and later The New Orleans Swamp Donkeys and the beautifully creative seersuckers made it a very memorable evening. I was delighted to meet newcomers to New Orleans, anchorman Charles Divins of WDSU and his lovely wifeFabiola.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152697851360870.1073742446.581200869&type=1&l=32f7f45bc3
Darlings, this coming weekend is going to be a social marathon because there so many fun scheduled events that I would love to attend but, as you know, I do not have a clone - yet.
For starters, you can join The Historic New Orleans Collection as it celebrates the opening of its new exhibition, "From Winnfield to Washington: The Life and Career of Huey P. Long," with a reception on Wednesday, May 13 at 533 Royal Street, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The event will feature menu selections from exhibition sponsor and French Quarter restaurant Kingfish Kitchen and Cocktails.
This display commemorates the 80th anniversary of Long's death. The charismatic politician remains one of the most visible, influential and controversial figures in Louisiana's history. Visitors will see items that reveal details about Long's life and career beyond the most well-known anecdotes. The more than 140 documents, maps, objects and photographs on view were selected from regional collections and THNOC's holdings - including several new items that have never before been exhibited at THNOC. The opening reception will offer extended viewing hours and an opportunity to meet the curators.
On Wednesday May 13, 2015, 6 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church,The Bishop Perry Center will present An Evening with Mario Lanza and Kathryn Grayson in the format of a classic mid-20th Century radio show. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature Michael Spyres, a young tenor whose star is rising rapidly on the international opera scene, and his equally impressive wife, Tara Stafford, a coloratura soprano. Appearing with them will be Jesse Reeks, concert pianist and organist at St. Louis Cathedral, and special guest artist Taylor Miller, baritone.
The event, free and open to the general public, is presented in cooperation with major music organizations of the city, and Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society/Words & Music for the benefit of the Bishop Perry Center. The program-presented in concert with the Archdiocese of New Orleans and St. Louis Cathedral-will take place May 13, 2015 at 6 p. m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1116 Chartres Street, part of the historic Ursuline Convent complex, which is today the Catholic Cultural Center.
The one-hour program will be followed by a reception in honor of the artists in the Convent garden tent, who will be happy to sign their CDs for attending guests. Please RSVP to Faulkhouse@aol.com if you plan to attend the reception so that we can plan appropriately for food and drink. Although the program is free and open to the public, voluntary donations to the Bishop Perry Center's mission to serve the disadvantaged will be most appreciated.
On Thursday, May 14, is the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana’s Networking Night and it will be welcoming its new HCCL Young Professionals at Manning's, 519 Fulton Street, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Free admission and complimentary hors d'oeuvres.
On Friday, May 15 is the Sixth Annual Suits & Salads Luncheon to benefit Dress for Success New Orleans at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 601 Loyola Avenue. The event will feature Ti Martin as the keynote speaker, a silent auction, original artwork and a raffle courtesy of Mignon Faget and Hiller Jewelry. Proceeds will go toward operating the Dress for Success boutique, which works to provide disadvantaged women with professional attire and a network of career support.
On that same evening the Preservation Resource Center's “A Red Hot Jazz Gala: 15th Annual Ladies in Red” is at the Carver Theater, 2101 Orleans Avenue. The gala honors jazz musicians for their contributions to New Orleans’ cultural legacy. The event also raises funds to support the Preservation Resource Center and its cultural heritage programming. This year honorees are :Antoine "Fats" Domino,Doreen Ketchens,Ellis Marsalis,Deacon John Moore,Tipitina's Foundation and Joseph Torregano
I have also been invited to attend, on May 15, the 10th Anniversary of Cork in the Park. It is a special wine tasting event to support historic City Park, at the Pavilion of the Two Sisters in City Park’s New Orleans Botanical Garden in New Orleans.
Also on Friday night, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will present “The Dark Side of the Moon: The Music of Pink Floyd.” Randy Jackson, lead singer/guitarist with Zebra, will be singing, backed up by a six-piece band with Brent Havens guest conducting. From what I hear, they will be performing the entire “Dark Side of the Moon” Pink Floyd album, one of the top-selling albums of all time, plus many other individual Pink Floyd songs. This should be a really fantastic show!
On Saturday, May 16, it is the American Heart Association's Heart Soul Gala at the Empire Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency New Orleans. The evening celebrates: the work and mission of the American Heart Association, the donors and volunteers; and — most importantly — the lives saved and improved because of everyone’s effort. The Heart Ball promises to be an engaging evening of fun and passion bringing community and philanthropic leaders together. Last year, the Heart Ball events raised close to $73 million with support from over 100,000 individuals and corporations nation-wide, allowing us to fund research and programs across the country and in your community.
That evening, On Saturday, May 16 from 7-11 p.m. is Havana Whites at the International Hotel-NEW ORLEANS + HAVANA // two sister cities united in RITUAL, ROMANCE, and PASSION
That evening, Bette Midler, also known by her informal stage name “The Divine Miss M,” will be performing at Smoothie King Center. A dynamic singer, as well as a songwriter, actress, comedian, and film producer, she puts on a show you won’t want to miss.
On Sunday, May 17 is Friends of the Cabildo's Spring Home and Courtyard Tour. The tour will visit six homes and courtyards in the French Quarter and will take the guests to sip on refreshments at Madame John’s Legacy. Self-guided tours start at the 1850 House, where maps will be provided.
The Faubourg Marigny is also having its 2015 Spring Home Tour on Sunday, May 17, Noon to 4 p.m. It will feature Marie Laveau's father's original shop building and McDonough 16, just renovated for Senior Housing. The self-guided Home Tour features beautiful Marigny properties typical of this historic neighborhood. The Spring Home Tour is popular with locals and visitors alike providing an intimate view of stately homes and gardens. Funds raised support FMIA initiatives such as maintenance and repairs to Washington Square Park. The Washington Square Park Festival is free and open to the public.
The “Big 4-Oh! Gala” of The NOCCA Institute will also take place on Sunday, May 17. The gala will feature performances by Grammy Award winners Pedrito Martinez and Terence Blanchard, food by New Orleans top chefs, and both silent and live auctions. The gala supports The NOCCA Institute, which provides supplemental funding to run the regional, pre-professional arts training center.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!
What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies? St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!
St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today. Later that year, a German church school was added.
St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area. Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.
St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations. We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues. We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support. We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.
