A Toast to New Orleans and YOU. Week of January 31st to February 7

Good morning my darling family and friends. A cloudy, breezy Tuesday February 1st awaits us. Let's say Goodbye to January and welcome February 2022 with gratefulness in our heart for being alive and healthy. Let's pray for those with COVID 19 and those that have passed away. I am looking forward to a month full of Mardi Gras pageantry and love. “In February there is everything to hope for and nothing to regret" Have a blessed month.

This past week was a very existing one. I enjoyed so much volunteering at the Founders Ball III
The Louisiana Museum Foundation’s presentation of Founders Ball III Rex The 150th Anniversary of the School of Design , an Exhibition of the Louisiana State Museum at the Presbytere on Jackson Square is spectacular. The exquisite exhibition was curated by Wayne Phillips , Curator of Costumes, Collection and Textiles at the Louisiana State Museum and Dr. Stephen Hales . Historian and Activist of the Rex Organization.
On Sunday, I was invited to attend the private preview party of  JPAC 's opening of the Stage Play "Fly" and the unveiling of Souls of Valor and presentations .

Once again, the annual Cancer Crusaders luncheon was a very joyful Celebration of Life  for the 10 cancer survivors honorees, family and friends. The exquisitely decorated black and white was held at the ballroom of the Marriott Hotel!

Have great week and I see you on Monday at Galatoire's Auction Tables Before Mardi Gras and at my RTL on Wed. 16 at noon at Briquette's

Darlings, I just want to remind you that I am putting together the table for the upcoming spectacular Mardi Gras Coronation Round Table luncheon on Wednesday, February 16 at noon at Briquette's
It is 2022 Carnival Time and as such the annual Round Table Luncheon Saluting Carnival on February 16 at noon at Briquette's will be an incredibly special one. I have invited my talented roommate Rick Tringali, founder of Jazz Crawl to be my co-host. The Roundtable Luncheon will be crowning a “Royal Court” for this year’s Carnival season! Anticipation will build as the King, Queen, Dukes, and Maids are selected and crowned through a random drawing. We will have speakers to share insight and appreciation for the unique monarch tradition of Mardi Gras Krewes and Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs. With support from sponsors, we hope to commission a local artist to create the crowns and a brass band to lead a mini-second line with the royals.
More details on how to enter the royal drawing or how to become a sponsor coming soon!
I have invited as speakers Nell Nolan, Arthur Hardy, Carl Mack and Greg Lambousey. Entertainment by Al "Carnival"  Johnson, Becky Allen, Carl Mack, Marshall Harris , Suzaune Yee McKamay and others.

“FLY”
A PLAY ABOUT WW2 AFRICAN AMERICAN FIGHTER PILOTS
KNOWN AS “THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN"
PRESENTED BY JEFFERSON PERFORMING ARTS SOCIETY
A LOUISIANA PREMIERE – FEBRUARY 4-13, 2022

Jefferson Performing Arts Society will present “FLY,” a stage play written by Trey Ellis and Ricardo Kahn, about the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. It makes its Louisiana premiere over the weekends of February 4-6 and 11-13 at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie.

The production is directed by New Orleans native Tommye Myrick, recipient of the 2020 Big Easy Lifetime Achievement in Theater. Ms. Myrick was also the winner of the 1992 Big Easy Entertainment Award for Best Drama and Best Director for August Wilson’s “Fences at Le Petit Theatre, and the 1999 Big Easy Best Director award for “Flyin’ West at Southern Rep Theatre. She is the former Artistic Director of Southern University and Assistant Director of the Center for African and African American Studies and the former Executive Director of the New Orleans African American Museum.

“FLY” tells the story of the 332nd Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Forces known as the “Tuskegee Airmen.” It traces the experiences of four black servicemen - three Americans and one from the West Indies - as they train for battle against German aircrafts, as told through the eyes of one survivor as he attends the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Using the 1940s military experience as a microcosm of race relations in America, the play illustrates how these men fought racism at home while battling fascism overseas, and how their successes led to greater equality in the armed forces, and ultimately engendered the Civil Rights Movement.

“FLY” combines live action video, military marches, actual combat footage and vibrant sound effects and lighting, all contributing to a stellar 90-minute, no-intermission presentation.

“FLY” runs for two weekends in February: Friday through Sunday, February 4-6 and 11-13. Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m.; Sundays at 2:00 p.m.

For a full schedule, directions to the Jefferson Performing Arts Center, and ticket information, visit www.jpas.org or call the box office at 504-885-2000. School day performances are also available. The all-local cast and artistic team is comprised of Greater New Orleans area actors, crew, and designers.

Jazz returns to the streets of New Orleans

In good times and bad, New Orleans musicians have been schooled and raised in a unique culture, one that was severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, when the streets of the Big Easy were unnaturally quiet and empty, and much of the music moved online. "Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel meets with musicians back out in front of audiences sharing their music while perpetuating a French Quarter tradition of street performance; and with the creative director of Preservation Hall, which was founded to help preserve a unique American legacy: the New Orleans jazz artist.
