My first social-cultural event was the Celebration of the Independence of Mexico at Gallier Hall. And last Wednesday was my annual Round Table Luncheon Saluting the Cultural Arts at Antoine's. It was a gathering of Who’s Who in the local cultural scene, and that included the Honorable Consuls of France, Italy and Mexico . It was co-hosted by Scott Hutcheson, Senior Advisor to the Mayor for Cultural Economy of the City of New Orleans and yours truly.
The featured speakers were Jenny Hamilton, New Orleans Ballet Association; Maestro Robert Lyall, New Orleans Opera; Maestro Dennis Assaf, Jefferson Performing Arts Society; Neil A. Barclay, Contemporary Arts Center; Allison Gouaux and Kristen Jochem, New Orleans Museum of Art; Sean Snyder, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra; Alphonse Smith from the Arts Council of New Orleans and Maxwell Williams, director of Le Petite Theatre.
Special guests were Hon. Consul of France, Gregor Trumel; Hon. Consul General of Mexico, Ramon Gonzalez Jamison; and Honorary Consul of Italy, Frank Maselli.
Entertainment was by bass-baritone Ivan Griffin, who has performed with the New Orleans Opera Association and Opera Creole, and soprano Kathleen Halm Simmons, who was accompanied on the piano by Timothy Todd Simmons, Director of the New Orleans Opera Association. Talented Jim Walpole played piano before and after the Luncheon o the delight of his many fans. Champagne and wines were flowing thanks to Ross and Sandra Herman and yours truly!

The other events that kept me goings were on Thursday when I attended the triumphal return of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra to the Orpheum Theatre.

Bravo! Bravo! That was the crowd was clamoring after the fabulous sold-out concert of the LPO at its first concert in the newly renovated Orpheum Theatre. The LPO is celebrating its 25th Anniversary Season and it presented, this past weekend, Mahler's “Resurrection Symphony” with dynamic Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto at its helm and featured guest soloists soprano Susannah Biller and mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke. The sold-out crowd was also treated to Nova Masterworks and the Loyola University Chorale under the expert direction of Dr. Meg Frazier.
The standing ovations were many for the dynamic Maestro Prieto, the musicians, the sopranos and the Chorale. For them and the rest of us, it was exhilarating to be back in that magnificent theater after ten years. The city of New Orleans and especially its arts community owes a debt of gratitude and a million thanks to Roland and Mary von Kurnatowski and Dr. Eric George for their roles in putting the Orpheum back into commerce! Thank you from all of us!!

On Saturday, I enjoyed so much much attending Casa Argentina's Tango Clebration 2015.
Casa Argentina's presentation of Tango Celebration with renowned dancers and choreographers Los Hermanos Macanosand their dancers along with the Julio and Cesar Band was spectacular.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152974424620870.1073742519.581200869&type=1&l=2094a6dc57
Of course by Sunday, I was exhausted since in addition to all all these soirees, I have been also working a Casell-Bergen gallery. But C'est Le Vie!
But I did not said no to an invitation to attend a lovely first Mastersigner Reception to welcome the cast of New Orleans Opera’s upcoming production of Verdi’s La Traviata.(ONLY 2 PERFORMANCES - October 9 & 11, 2015) at Mahalia Jackson Theatre for the Performing Arts.
It was hosted by the Consul General of France Grégor Trumel, and his wife, Ingrid, in their residence . This upcoming week is going to be another exciting cultural week. And, among the other exciting events of the week is the Grand Opening of the brand-new Jefferson Performing Arts Center on Airline Drive in Metairie. The opening show is one of my favorites, “My Fair Lady.” The classic Lerner and Loewe musical about a Cockney flower seller who is transformed into a lady by the always-grammatically-correct Professor Henry Higgins will run on successive weekends from September 25 through October 4. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays.Micah Richerand Desonier stars in the title role as Eliza Doolittle. Kris Shaw is Professor Higgins and Louis Dudoussat is Colonel Pickering. Clayton Phillips is the director and Kristin Blatchford is the scenic designer. Dr. Donna Clavijo is the musical director.
It is going to be a great season for the Jefferson Performing Arts Society, now that they are finally in their new home venue. Many other wonderful shows are scheduled there this coming season and I will let you know more about them as they get closer. Just to give you a hint, though, they’re going to be presenting grand opera, ballet (including “The Nutcracker”) and Broadway-caliber musicals, including . . . are you ready for this!!?? a high-flying “Mary Poppins”! You definitely won’t want to miss that one.
In the meantime, congratulations to JPAS Artistic Director, Maestro Dennis Assaf and longtime arts patron Hannah Cunningham (who turned 100 this year!) for keeping alive the vision for a first-rate performing arts center in Jefferson Parish and seeing it through to completion after nearly 40 years. Bravo y Brava!!
And one more milestone well worth noting here. Musica da Camera, which specializes in presenting medieval and Renaissance music on authentic period instruments, begins its 50th season this coming Sunday with a performance at St. Joseph’s Abbey near Covington. For those who don’t live near there, not to worry: two other concerts are scheduled on successive weekends closer to where most of us live. They are on Sunday October 4, 4 p.m., Our Lady of Prompt Succor National Shrine (Ursuline Chapel), 2701 State St., New Orleans and on Sunday October 11, 3 p.m., St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1101 S. Carrollton Ave. (corner of Zimple St.), also in New Orleans.
Thanks to generous grants from a number of sources, all MDC concerts are free and open to the public. So, congratulations to Musica da Camera co-directors,Milton G. Scheuermann Jr. and Thais St. Julien on celebrating the five-member ensemble’s Golden Anniversary. And, in February of 2016, they will also mark their 40th year on WWNO Radio with their “Continuum” early music show.
You can read more about Musica da Camera and “My Fair Lady” in this Thursday’s New Orleans Advocate, posted online Wednesday night.

Dine with the sharks Sept. 24 at Audubon aquarium
On Sept. 24, New Orleans chefs collaborate on a six-course meal served at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas' Gulf of Mexico exhibit.
If dinner under the stars feels a bit passe, how about dinner under the gaze of more than a dozen sand tiger and nurse sharks?
On Sept. 24, a team of New Orleans chefs prepares a six-course meal at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, a dinner benefitting the Audubon Nature Institute's Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries (G.U.L.F.) program.
Guests will be seated in front of the massive Gulf of Mexico exhibit and its sea turtles, sand tiger, nurse and brown sharks.
The dining event, led by G.W. Fins chef and co-owner Tenney Flynn, features a group of chefs on the G.U.L.F. Chef Council, a group formed in 2014 as part of the Audubon Nature Institute's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable seafood harvested from fisheries in the Gulf.
Participating chefs include
Flynn, Susan Spicer (Bayona), Alan Ehrich (Audubon Nature Institute), Kristen Essig (Meauxbar), Chris Lynch (Atchafalaya) and Jeremy Wolgamott (High Hat Café).
Dishes include crab Waldorf salad; a medley of tuna trifle, snapper ceviche and smoked spinach and drum salad; and fresh Gulf fish preparations with accompanying dishes like cracked pozole with huitlacoche and chanterelles, a dish Tenney says he was inspired to make following a summer trip to Oaxaca.
Tickets for the event are $150 and include wine pairings, tax and gratuity. Click here to buy tickets to the dinner.
