A Toast to New Orleans and YOU! Week of August 14-21

A Toast to New Orleans and YOU! Week of August 14-21

Good afternoon, my darling family and friends. A beautiful Monday, August 14 is awaking me in my beloved Santo Domingo. I'm blessed.  Waking up to a new day is a gift; appreciate it and do remember you are loved.  Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons." Stay cool & hydrated! Miss you
I hope you all enjoyed the Red Dress Run and Dirty Linen Night. I also hated to miss my darling friend Kristy Laschober's release of her book "Perfecty Flawed."  my longtime friend Triness Kuhn's Iris Apfel "Thank You For Being a Friend "at the Chateau Golf and Country Club. Even though I was not personally there, my darling longtime friend Liz  Glazer Broekman represented me and  I think she got it!May be an image of 4 people and hatMay be an image of 2 peopleMay be an image of 1 person, eye patch, costume, glasses and cloak

Darlings, as you know I have been escaping the wave of scorching heat at my ancestral home in Santo Domingo and at my favorite beach Boca Chica.Fortunately, my dentist has an office in Boca Chica, so I underwent dental surgery for implants and have been recovering ever since! Since I was taking antibiotics, I was not allowed to consumed alcohol and not solid food. So, I needed to have a reward and the first opportunity I had, I took advantage of it and indulged big time.

Ever since my darling friend Hon. Tony Genoa, Consul General of the Dominican Republic to New Orleans, recommended Boca Marina as one of the Best Restaurant in Boca Chica. I have been salivating on a meal there and I was not disappointed!  I couldn't allow a Friday goes by without going to luncheon somewhere and Boca Marina was just perfect! The setting was breath taking with the gentle waves of the Caribbean Sea rolling by. I ordered Spanish Cava and  Mero con Coco( Grouper cooked in a coconut sauce) and it was delicious. I shall return to try different dishes.Boca Marina | Restaurant & Lounge

Happiness to me is being able to spend the weekend with my cousins at the beach and eating a delicious paella and typical Dominican cuisine.

Upon my return to Santo Domingo, I witness a parade of Dominican characters in full regalia -of our beloved Diablos Cojuelos that is part of Carnaval. i think they were parading in anticipation of the celebration of August 16.  Dominicans celebrate Restoration Day  which is a public holiday in the Dominican Republic Their majestic costumes remind me of the Mardi Gras Indians' exquisite colorful  suits . I grew up watching and fearing them, so I was thrilled to seeing them parade right in front of my ancestral home. WOW I feel so blessed

Diablos Cojuelos
Represent a naughty and playful demon, who hits and frightens the audience with their balloons. They are the central characters of the Dominican Carnival and are indeed the most famous. We can see these characters in most of the towns across the Dominican Republic. Their costumes ridicules medieval knights – with a cape and colorful baggy pants. They add ornaments of mirrors, bells and ribbons to their costumes. Their mask represents an animal or a horrible and frightening face.
Different areas of the Dominican Republic have different names and different types of Diablos Cojuelos
These “traditional” Diablos Cojuelos always have a very scary mask with long sharp teeth and very elaborate costumes, often with lots of feathers.- Here is video of their participation in a Dominican Carnival Parade.

Zeelie Brown’s first art museum was the pine woods in Alabama. They make Black, queer refuges called “soulscapes”, borne from this sense of wilderness. Soulscapes are a gumbo melding sound, cello performance, installation, electronic, culinary, textile, process and performance art. These media, these soul-foods simmer together with the Alabama folk arts they learned as a child on their rural homestead to, somewhere deep within the viewer, lay a road down home.

Soulscapes are refuge: refuge from centuries of state ordained theft and genocide sculpting, financing and informing the very concept of art; refuge expressly for Black, queer people; refuge from hatred and ignorance that threatens to drown the land their ancestors are buried on; refuge from those whose wallets grow fat from selling black communities downriver; refuge.

Soulscapes live in-between the river and the sea, in rage, in salvation, in domesticity, in the blues, in creoles, in sweet lies told with a smile and crooked teeth, in gris-gris and mojo hands. Soulscapes live at dangerous, shifting crossroads because when you are born Black in America you are born nailed to the cross.
