A Toast to New Orleans and YOU: Week of June 19-26: Juneteenth/ Restaurant Week/ St. John's Eve/ Lobster Fest/ Petite and more...

Good afternoon, my darling family and friends.  Happy Juneteenth, Monday, June 19.  I am praying that you all had a terrific Father's Day.   “Mondays are tough only for those people, who don’t know how to spend them cheerfully. Get up and have fun today!”  The most beautiful way to start the day is with a grateful heart. “Every day, think as you wake up: Today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it.” — Dalai Lama XIV.  Enjoy Restaurant Week! Stay cool & hydrated!
morning my darling family and friends.

Darlings, I am in a state of euphoria about my plans for the upcoming 4th of July weekend (June 29-July 4th).
Thanks to the economical, direct flight from Breeze Airlines, I will be flying along my darling friend Libby Tringale to beautiful Charleston, South Carolina to attend the fun-loving Charleston's  Carifest, a celebration in honor of Caribbean American Heritage Month.  This year is dedicated to the Bahamas. After the parade on Saturday, we will take a train or a drive to the beautiful, historic city of Savannah, Ga.
Ever since I read and saw the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by my talented longtime friend John Berendt, I have been wanting to discover the beauty and the characters of Savannah.  I cannot wait!

Darlings, as in the past summer months, I will be taking refuge from the hot summer months (Mid July & August) at my beloved home in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Please put in your calendar that the upcoming 19th Round Table Luncheon Saluting the 2023-24 Cultural Season will be on Friday, September 8 at noon at Briquette's. Major Cultural organizations will be invited to share their programs for the new season . Talented entertainer Marshall Harris and drummer Carl Mack will perform before and after the Round Table Luncheon.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for socializing and seating and the luncheon and speakers start at 12 noon.

The $75- all-inclusive price includes a delicious, 3-course gourmet luncheon, champagne/wines . Make your reservations now by making payment by Zelle, Venmo or by sending a check to Margarita Bergen, 811 Marigny Street, Unit C, NO 70117

The always fun-and spectacular Halloween Round Table Luncheon with the theme Moulin Rouge has been tentatively scheduled for Oct. 20. Details will follow .

The exquisite resident in the Vieux Carre of Chip Blondeau was the setting for the French Quarter Citizens Membership Meeting
And Potluck Dinner.  It was a highly informative and delicious meeting. The guest speaker was Howie Kaplan, Night Mayor.
Howie is the owner of The Howlin’ Wolf, manager of the Rebirth Brass Band and a music industry advocate. Now, he’s also the first director of the Office of Nighttime Economy, a new department in Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s office focusing specifically on the parts of New Orleans life that pick up after dark.   Kaplan’s mission is simple: “To advocate for the nighttime cultural economy of the city of New Orleans and culture bearers, and that can take on a whole host of things.”

Dressed in my version of a Rhinestone Caribbean Voodoo Priestess, I enjoyed the fun-loving Debouche Luncheon on June 16 that put the Gris Gris at the Hurricane Season at the Crescent City Steak House on Broad Street. The costumes were creative at the delicious luncheon where the champagne and red wine were flowing. Unfortunately for me, when I woke up after a much-needed nap, it was too late for me to attend Opera at the Piazza. C'est La vie!

The Krewe of Pink's fourth annual DEATH BY CHOCOLATE...NOT BREAST CANCER, A Chocolate and Champagne Tasting with live music, a live competition for the BEST chocolate creation, raffles and more…at the Jacob Schoen Mansion was sinfully delicious! The fundraiser honored this year’s Sweet Survivors.

ST. JOHN’S EVE | VODOU RITUAL | SUMMER SOLSTICE

On Thursday, June 22 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, International House celebrates the advent of sultry summer with reverence and Vodou mystique found only in this Northernmost Caribbean City. A local institution, the hotel observes Saint John’s Eve on or before John the Baptist’s birthday (June 24). For the 24th year, this ritual is led by Priestess Sallie-Ann Glassman, and as always in New Orleans, a cocktail is created to whet the experience. A head washing ceremony, Haitian Clarin rum, our own Abigail Gullo lighting the Solstice Bonfire Punch and the bottled elixir bring it all vividly to life. You, in casual white, do too.

For this High Holy Day on the Vodou calendar, please join us - cocktail in hand!

6:00p - Introduction by Priestess Sallie Ann Glassman

6:15p - Lighting of the Solstice Bonfire Punch and Toast to St. John with Abigail Gullo

American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith

Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. at 520 Royal Street, Tricentennial Wing, 1st and 3rd Floors

In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to Octobe 8, 2023. Admission is free.

On Sunday, June 25, the incomparable Phillip Manuel will provide an Unforgettable Evening in the beautiful BK House Salon with music that crosses genres without missing a beat. The 6 pm concert will feature an assortment of favorites, including songs made famous by Nat King Cole and the Beatles. Manuel will round out the program with songs from his “Love Happened to Me” CD and other beloved picks that have pleased his audiences locally and across the globe.  Tickets are $40 ($30 for members) and may be purchased at https://www.bkhouse.org. Light refreshments will be served but guests are encouraged to bring beverages of choice, openers and extra cups. Doors will open at 5:30 pm for the 6 o’clock show.

July 6 will bring a special Evening of Absinthe with journalist and author Marielle Songy, highlighting her book The Absinthe Frappe, and complemented by a sampling of Jade Nouvelle-Orléans Absinthe Supérieure, courtesy of Ted A. Breaux of Jade Liqueurs, LLC.

Songy’s presentation will examine the history of absinthe, its origins, and its influences, culminating in the story of the iconic New Orleans cocktail. The audience will learn how bartender Cayetano Ferrér invented the concoction as she delves into the early days of the drink and its first home, the Old Absinthe House in the Crescent City. She will explore the ban on absinthe in the United States and Europe and the misguided reasoning behind it, all in the context of New Orleans’s response to national Prohibition more broadly. Finally, Songy will discuss the lifting of the restrictions on absinthe in 2007, a move largely spearheaded by New Orleans scientist and master distiller Theodore Breaux, who dispelled long-held notions that the Green Fairy invariably drove its connoisseurs to madness.

This not-to-be-missed program will be held at 6 pm in the BK House Salon, with doors opening at 5:30 pm.  Tickets are $10 ($5 for members) and include a specialty crafted absinthe cocktail with light refreshments. Visit https://www.bkhouse.org to reserve your seat.
